That Private Eye article is fantastic.
I was thinking about the criticism of them the other day and the criticism we’ve had for criticising them, particularly about Harry’s hoax phone call. Warning: this may be a long & serious post!
Satire and criticism as a whole tends to “punch up”. Harry has all, or at the very least almost all, of the privileges - he’s white, rich, male, upper class, educated or rather was given an excellent education up to the point it got more selective, he’s not physically disabled and nor does he have a hidden disability (AFAIK).
Therefore am I going to feel bad for taking the piss out of him should I do so? Am I fuck. And I’ve got an eye roll for anyone who thinks taking the piece out of him is mean.
All the above privileges apply to Meghan except of course being female, white and being middle-class by upbringing rather than upper. As someone half-white and someone who “passes” as white, she is more ‘privileged’ then people with much darker skin. She’s said this herself. Ditto for the being female - all of us female who are also educated and middle-class are much more privileged than those who aren’t.
However much of a victim they think of themselves or portray themselves as such, they are not poor, uneducated, without resources, in bad health, or disabled.
