No surprise there, then.

Do we think he'll hold out for the threatened subpoena or will the renewed public spotlight mean he jumps before he's pushed?

I bet it will all l come to nothing as far as Prince Andrew is concerned. I cant see him paying out a penny. And as somebody else said the allegations are very vague. I wonder if it will depend in the Maxwell woman and what she has to say.

CathyorClaire · 24/08/2021 20:55

I read a report that said he may never be able to leave the UK again. The French authorities are also interested in questioning him and I assume EU agreements mean he could be turned over to them from anywhere in the EU.

The longer the silence goes on the more I'm convinced the current strategy is to let this case run out of time and hope VG doesn't have the energy or inclination to start over.

Thank you to those of you who put the technicalities so well on here. It's better than programmes on TV or radio, which usually only ever scratch the surface of things.
I think there are some of you who remember when Andrew was young randy Andy, and in the navy, and sent to the Falklands, and came back with a red rose, but he wasn't represented as a dodgy sleaze-ball in those days as far as I recall. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. When did the rot set in?

CathyorClaire · 24/08/2021 21:23

The signs have always been there.

Way back in 1984 the 'prankster prince' was hauled over the coals for spraying paint at reporters and saying 'I enjoyed that'.

More recent reports have him driving through faulty non-opening gates at Windsor rather than taking a mile or so's detour to a functioning set.

How dreadful, obviously hanging offences, preferably hung, drawn and quartered. My goodness you have a long memory, I remember none of that.

CathyorClaire · 25/08/2021 09:03

Not 'hanging offences'Hmm , no but clear pointers among others over the years to the sheer arrogance that finally led him to Newsnight's door and all that continues to follow.

He is a spoilt entitled rude brat which isnt very endearing at the age of 60. Most people would have had to bear the consequences of their actions. He hasn't up until now. I don't approve of the concept of royalty.

meercat23 · 25/08/2021 10:48

He was probably always a spoilt and entitled brat but while he had a clear role, i.e. military service, this could be overlooked as being because he was young and headstrong. Without any meaningful role his entitlement and arrogance has become more and more visible and less and less excusable. The so called Trade Envoy role just seems to have been a mechanism for consorting with questionable types and I haven't ever gheard of any real benefit to the UK from that role. He is a classic illustration of why the RF does need to be slimmed down with only the direct heirs as full time and the others making their own way.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2021 11:52

Glad I'm not the only one who remembers those incidents, Cathy ... as you say, pointers to the underlying attitude and general oafishness

Roussette · 25/08/2021 12:05

meercat23 So agree. His role as 'Trade Envoy' was questioned for years before he had to give it up. He's a massive keen golfer and used the private jets in that role to fly all round the world playing golf.

I completely agree. Andrew clearly has no diplomatic skills whatsoever, which I'd imagine are required as Trade Envoy. Just because someone was born into royalty doesn't make them an expert on anything, which is why I'm Hmm when any of the RF publicly pontificate on subjects they aren't experts on, or even worse, venture into lecturing others when they don't live those values themselves.
CathyorClaire · 26/08/2021 10:21

So he's now apparently used a convoy of personal plated SUV's to get himself the length of the country and back for a ten day visit.

Is he now holed up at Windsor?

I believe so, he's back at Royal Park.

Very true, but remember they have platoons of staff who fawn and coo over their every word or act. Easy for even the most sensible mind to get bent by that, never mind someone who's thoroughly inadequate in the first place

It's the same with Andrew's claimed "value" to British industry as an envoy. All they have to do is prop him up in a corner, hope to god he keeps his mouth shut - futile, I know, but they can hope - then wheel him on for the photo op and claim "Andy inks the deal"

And wasn't it via Wikileaks that Simon Wilson's severe remarks about the oaf were published? Worth checking them out, though I doubt he repeated them to the palace if he wanted to keep his job

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/08/2021 11:41

Simon Wilson's remarks in full, from the Gulf Daily News no less Hmm
Seems it was originally reported in the Daily Mail so usual caveats apply, but short of linking the Mail itself I can't find anywhere else that contains the full quote:

I so agree with this Puzzled.

Illustrated by Emily Maitlis saying after the carcrash interview that PA and his aides were really pleased with how it went. And then there was the backlash....

I can understand it that members of the RF aren't in the real world but it seems like the courtiers and aides aren't either

I've seen bits of that article before. How he went so many years as Trade Envoy makes me really angry.

Well... the chickens are coming to roost now..

I am gobsmacked at the report in that link. If even a tiny fraction of that is true it is outrageous that no-one stepped in to remove him from the role. It also makes is horrifically easy to see how he could have believed that he was entitled to consort with the likes of Epstein and behave any way he chose to.

That's so funny. Like our street at Halloween, curtains drawn, lights off, use your phone to go upstairs-nothing to see here Grin
Roussette · 26/08/2021 12:59

Eaumyword

Are you me?

Seriously! I do that!

Now my DCs are grown up, I just do not want to answer the door, especially as the last time I did, there were some very menacing teenagers with scream masks on!

Eaumyword · 26/08/2021 13:05

Definitely twinning there...
It's a whole new thread, but yes to the hiding and hissing at teen DS to stay dark!Grin
I know this topic isn't funny, but can just imagine Fergie getting shouted at for going to open the door Smile

Roussette · 26/08/2021 13:12

hahaha... yes, I can imagine too! A delivery of her Mills & Boon book to distribute to her pals, doorbell rings... ooopsie!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/08/2021 13:27

I can understand it that members of the RF aren't in the real world but it seems like the courtiers and aides aren't either

Very true, but then I expect it takes a certain suspension of disbelief to work in a role like that. It's one thing putting on a good face for a royal visit or whatever, and quite another having to do it day in day out, no matter how much you value the (poor) pay

What beats me is that some of the more professional staff are seconded from genuinely valuable jobs, and I wonder how they reconcile that. Still, I suppose it glitzes up the CV for the sort who care about that kind of thing ...

Roussette · 26/08/2021 13:31

Puzzled

Yes to that.

I'm fascinated by it. Who on earth would want a job like that, it's bad enough having to be polite to idiot colleagues or the useless boss, but this is a whole different level of bowing and scraping.
I wonder if any of them do listen to advice. I'm just not sure. I've always imagined the members of the RF are just the shiny front piece and it's the courtiers who run the show... or the 'men in grey suits' as Diana called them.
