No surprise there, then.

Do we think he'll hold out for the threatened subpoena or will the renewed public spotlight mean he jumps before he's pushed?

You're right, Plumtree it is a seedy business, but I hope it doesn't go away because we need to expose those who would exploit and protect those who are exploited.
I hope that victims of trafficking get justice and that wealthy, powerful men who abuse others get brought to justice, until then I'll keep banging on about it.

Roussette · 13/08/2021 07:22

No the queen is not stupid she has probably got the wheels in motion hiring top lawyers etc to try and sort it out with the same dignity she has always shown

Yes, damage limitation to protect the Monarchy. That comes above everything Hmm
The dignity is under question if this is ignored.

As an article today says...

The royal family has faced difficult and embarrassing challenges in the past, including the departure of the Sussexes. This, though, is much more serious. It will not be survived by pulling the duvet over the collective royal head. As well as the essential issue of justice, there are issues of state involved, issues of institutional credibility and international confidence

The Prince of Wales is right to suspect there will be no way back into public life for his brother from all this. Now he must also use his influence to ensure that Prince Andrew faces his accuser. He must do the thing that royals most pride themselves on doing – his duty

Gilmorehill · 13/08/2021 10:14

Even if PA got on the next plane and proceeded to successfully defend himself against the lawsuit, I still wouldn’t want to say his face again at royal occasions. That image of him walking with JE in Central Park AFTER his release from prison is sickening.

CathyorClaire · 13/08/2021 10:51

Epstein wanted them to be indebted to him

Yes. That figures .It also figure that they may not have wanted to fall out with him by insisting on repaying a (to them) trivial amount and risk losing all the other toys and jollies he was chucking their way.

Neither of them have ever been averse to a freebie.

OP posts:
Roussette · 13/08/2021 11:01

They've both lived their life creaming off the freebies which is why SF got in such debt when she divorced. She couldn't get her head round the fact you had to have money to live a certain privileged lifestyle.

I do wonder how far Maxwell's friendship with PA will go. They've been friends for decades and this..

"An email exchange between Andrew and Maxwell, days after the prince was named in US court documents submitted by Roberts Giuffre, suggests he was asking for help in responding to the allegations.

In the 2015 emails, unearthed in a BBC Panorama investigation, the prince writes: “Let me know when we can talk. Got some specific questions to ask you about Virginia Roberts.”

Maxwell replies: “Have some info. Call me when you have a moment.”

So all this nonsense about not knowing VG is lies, pure lies.

Maireas · 13/08/2021 11:03

I really hope it all comes out.

CathyorClaire · 13/08/2021 11:05

I doubt it would have crossed Prince Andrew's mind that she was trafficked

She wasn't an isolated case. It also appears never to have crossed his mind to wonder at the sheer number of unchaperoned and very young girls who appeared and disappeared regularly around Epstein.

At the moment there's an unhealthy preoccupation with the entire seedy business

Well given it's still a top news item that's hardly surprising.

Why is a preoccupation with the possibility a wealthy, prominent, arrogant sleaze may have exploited a vulnerable girl similar in age to his daughters unhealthy?

OP posts:
Roussette · 13/08/2021 11:08

No idea why it's 'an unhealthy preoccupation' unless you want coerced victims to just go away and shut up.

This is huge and whilst PA is battened down in Balmoral with his Mother and ex-wife, there is nothing much to report. But there is a time limit on this and there will be.

It's not going away.

CathyorClaire · 13/08/2021 11:15

I do wonder how far Maxwell's friendship with PA will go. They've been friends for decades

I did read that she intends to do all in her power to get him off the hook but I can't see that happening if dropping him or anyone else in it knocks months or years off her time.

She doesn't strike me as the sacrificial lamb sort. More of a canary.

Plumtree391 · 13/08/2021 11:27

I've been watching a documentary about Ghislane Maxwell called 'Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell'. It's a Sky documentary but I joined Now TV in order to access it as I don't have Sky. It really is an eye opener, well sourced,, and I recommend it.

Maireas · 13/08/2021 11:28

What does it say?

Plumtree391 · 13/08/2021 12:15

Too many to itemise; I'm halfway through episode 2 so not yet ready to sum up. One thing I didn't realise was that Epstein was around when Robert Maxwell was still alive, and known to the family. Previously I'd assumed Ghislane first met him when she went to the States in 1992.

So far it's quite....sinister, for want of a better word. Not in a gratuitous way, the basic facts are sinister with no need of embroidery.

@thereisonlyoneofme.....are you for real?!

Serenster · 13/08/2021 16:34

Yes, damage limitation to protect the Monarchy. That comes above everything

To be fair, the impact of both civil and criminal legal proceedings on the immediate individuals’ wider circle (family, friends, employer, reputation on a business they may own etc) is a perfectly legitimate consideration for many people and the wider context is something lawyers routinely advise on. I have also seen individuals hire PR specialists to manage their involvement in newsworthy disputes. So the Queen wouldn’t be an outlier in doing this.

Pixxie7 · 16/08/2021 07:44

So his defence is going to be he had diplomatic immunity, this is getting worse by the minute.

CathyorClaire · 16/08/2021 10:31

Diplomatic immunity on the grounds that he was a trade envoy at the time. The position dogged throughout by controversy and ending with questions surrounding his friendship with ...Epstein.

Incredible.

OP posts:
OverByYer · 17/08/2021 12:47

Disgusting. He clearly doesn’t have an ounce of decency. I think when the Queen passes he will ( hopefully) find himself more exposed. I can’t see Charles or William protecting him like the Queen does

Gilmorehill · 17/08/2021 12:52

Can you claim diplomatic immunity in a civil lawsuit?

OverByYer · 17/08/2021 19:27

Possibly? Didn’t that American woman claim it when the British family tried to sue her for knocking their son

Pixxie7 · 17/08/2021 20:14

I think that was a criminal case.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 18:13

Oh dear oh dear oh dear... this is appalling

www.thedailybeast.com/queen-elizabeth-warns-press-photographers-to-stay-away-from-balmoral-and-prince-andrew?via=twitter_page

You couldn't make it up could you...

Pixxie7 · 18/08/2021 18:30

I think this will only serve to damage his case further.
