Prince Charles and Princess Anne

So... when Prince Charles and Princess Anne were born, Philip was ‘only’ a Duke.

So, how come they were titled HRH Prince/Princess?

Letters Patent?

Because their mother was the Queen.

Because they were the children of a reigning monarch.

Children and (male line) grandchildren are usually Prince or Princess.

However as Queen Elizabeth II is the fount if all honours she can promote someone else if she chooses.

I understand that Princess Anne declined titles for her children.

I don’t think the Queen was the Queen when he was born.

They are HRH because they were the children of the next in line to the throne. (The queen, who at the time was just a princess)
Technically princess Charlotte and Prince Louis should not be prince or princess as they are great grandchildren of the monarch, but the queen changed the rules for them. Prince Harry and Meghans baby won’t be a prince or princess.

“According to letters patent issued by King George V in 1917 the sons and daughters of sovereigns and the male-line grandchildren of sovereigns are entitled to the style”.

According to the above (Wikipedia), neither Charles nor Anne would be HRH Prince/Princess...

Yes. She did this because of the change of primogeniture rules which meant if Will/Kate’s first born was a girl (who would have been heir to the throne), she’d have been Lady X, whereas her eldest brother would be HRH Prince Y

Surely this situation basically applied as George had no sons so Elizabeth was his heir, and so treated as a sort of 'male line'?

This suggests he was born a prince. Can’t seem to find anything on him automatically being HRH or not though.

And, if it was because he was 2nd in line to the throne when he was born (which I’m not convinced it was), it doesn’t explain why Anne was born HRH Princess...

They’re have been Lord/Lady tho wouldn’t they? Not Master/Miss?

I think the letters patent made him Duke of Edinburgh (he was only prince before that) and that was in 1957 so quite a long time after his marriage.

HRH Duke of Edinburgh,.. but he wouldn’t have passed on them title Prince to his son and daughter given that, would he? Given he wasn’t a Prince himself when they were born?

He was a prince when they were born. He was a prince of the Greek royal family.
