Are many people planning street parties?
What you doing at yours? Would a bouncy castle be overkill do you think?

Going on holiday to avoid it all...

fridayschild · 10/04/2011 21:54

We are having our street party on bank holiday Monday. That way anyone who wants to go into town to cheer the happy couple can do so and anyone who wants to escape the whole wretched business can do that too, and we can all come together as a happy street to party on Monday. I am a republican and it seemed like a pretty obvious solution to me. There are lots of under eights, and it will be aimed at them, with adults free to entertain themselves by drinking during the day.

Football match, face painting, chalk pictures on the road. Bring your own food and drink - all pretty low key. We're not doing a bouncy castle because we can't be bothered to arrange a whip round.

And we are hoping to (ahem) help neighbouring streets take down all their redundant bunting on Saturday....

mollymawk · 10/04/2011 23:24

Well, our local party (can't have a true street party as we live on an A road...) is full!!! Very royalist round my way, clearly. So my answer is no. I'd have taken the DCs if there had been space though.

Working, and earning double pay and a day off in lieu now it's a public holiday. I am grudgingly grateful about that but otherwise don't really care. We wouldn't have been watching it.

bojangles77 · 11/04/2011 00:18

this royal wedding hasnt the warmth of past ones ...and people are more concerened with their own problems..finances ..but good on ya if you feel a party coming on! i will be glued ..on the morning!

sieglinde · 11/04/2011 10:30

Personally, I'd rather roast in hell than go to a royal street party. I won't be watching it, even. I'm a republican and I get very catsbumface about the money it's costing. How about a street party for disabled carers or NHS nurses? Glum, I know.

bigteach · 11/04/2011 10:48

Just glad of the extra day off!

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 13:35

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than go to a street party I shall not;

a) watch the wedding
b) celebrate the wedding
c) speak to anyone who does either a or b.

Ginabraz · 11/04/2011 16:13

Why not get all the party gear from the Middleton's!!

I was kind of hoping that they would sell the Will/Kate memorabilia so I could have a laugh.

girlafraid · 11/04/2011 16:15

Holding a republican alternative party with red flag bunting

FannyFifer · 11/04/2011 16:27

I'm with sieglinde

sieglinde · 11/04/2011 16:46

Girlafraid, the council won't let you have those, apparently. But if you do get a license, let us all know and we'll come along. I'll bring the borscht.

lili2010 · 11/04/2011 17:21

Another one on the side of the republicans here. Viva la revolution!

expatinscotland · 11/04/2011 17:49

Let's face it, for most people, it's just an excuse to get drunk.

It's just two toffs getting married.

BFD.

Friday's enough of an excuse for people to get drunk without that.

we are having an unofficial street party.
if the weather is good after the ceremony on tv we are putting our BBQ's on our neighbours front lawn (with their permission) and we are all going to gather to eat sausages and have a few beers.
I love the wedding and I think the royal famil are a fab part of great britain.

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 18:22

ByThePower, I'm afraid I cannot take your last comment seriously.

sieglinde · 11/04/2011 19:56

I love the awful He-Man, but P, that just sounds ttrrragic. mean, what is it to you that these people you've never met get married?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 11/04/2011 20:45

OK I will never try to convince someone else about things like this, it is just a personal feeling that human beings automatically need a person at the top of the tree, even if it ijust for them to throw conkers at.
The idea of the alternative to a monarchy is hideous, a popularity contest that could end up with a nob like george bush as the person at the top of the tree?
We would probably end up with some britains got the xfactor on Ice call in show to vote. Arrghh!! The Queen has done very well as monarch to steer her family through huge social change. Considering how they all seemed to fuck up 15 years ago, they are turning out good kids with level heads. IMO

seeker · 11/04/2011 20:51

Prince Andrew is most definitely a good kid with a level head!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 11/04/2011 20:52

I didnt mean that generation!!!!!!!!! he was in the fuck up catagory.

seeker · 11/04/2011 21:44

You do realize that you have absolutely no way of knowing whether they are 'good kids' or not?
What you see are media constructs. Heaven alone knows what they are actually like.

BringBackGoingForGold · 12/04/2011 09:14

Dunno if you can really compare US presidents with UK monarchy. At least in the US system they're elected. Yes, yes, I know they often fuck up and end up with baboons like Bush, but that hopefully wouldn't happen here. And anyway, that's democracy, and as someone once said, democracy is the worst system apart from all the others. It's certainly less worst (?) than a hereditary monarchy in which we have no say or choice.

sieglinde · 12/04/2011 09:55

Yes, but Greyskull, Andrew IS a knob. And Charles's views are not much saner than Bush's. He's a bit of a knob too - I mean, anyone who'd say he wished he was somebody's tampon while Opining on art and literature as though he's better than everyone is a headcase. The queen may be all right - dunno, and we have no WAY OF KNOWING, but the D of E would lose his deposit in any urban constituency because of his emetic racism.

If we need people to look up to, can we not choose people worthy of being admired rather than pretending that rich people born into a particular family are of value? I'd rather go to a street party to celebrate people who work themselves hard caring for autistic kids.
