I have a question for the wise cat people of this thread: how much truth do you attach to the idea that you should have one litter tray per cat, plus an extra one?

I currently have 3 litter trays (2 large and 1 smaller tray) but they are rarely used. On the rare occasion they do, both of them go in the same one.

If the per cat plus extra litter tray requirement is not as essential as all that, I'd be much more open to a third cat. Nothing against the litter trays, but I have a finite number of empty room corners in which to put them...

We have four cats and one large litter tray.
No issues with that.
They sometimes share 😆

@Kirova my cats have always shared a litter tray. When they were kittens they would go to the litter tray together - one would do her business and the other would sit in the tray with her and watch. Now they're far too big to do that, but they still seem to be completely happy sharing a tray.

However, they are siblings and have always been together so it may be a bit different. But if you currently have two cats sharing one tray happily, and so can use the second tray for the third cat, I reckon it will be fine.

stormsandsunshine · 05/11/2026 15:11

This is how most litter tray visits went when we first had them.

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats At least they are not facing each other!

Gearing up for bonfire night here, cat flaps locked background noise drawn curtains, feliway

CatsonPollock · 05/11/2026 16:20

Another household here with 2 cats and only one litter tray (was the same with our previous 2 cats) and no problems.

On the rare occasion we are away overnight and no one is coming in to bow down before them, I usually put a second tray out in the same room as the usual one...just in case.

CatsonPollock · 05/11/2026 16:22

Yes - dreading the next few nights of fireworks. Have made a couple of blanket tents across some chairs as well as battening down all the hatches!

Defiantly41 · 05/11/2026 16:35

@Kirova, I think it also depends how much you are around in the day. We had 2 cats 1 tray but they did have access to outdoors in the daytime, although with age all have been less keen to “go” outside. But I’m retired and around for at least part of each day to scoop any solids. Miss B will actually come and alert me to tray duties!

edited to add: as she’s over 20, she’s also pretty deaf so not afraid of fireworks thank goodness

RumNotRun · 05/11/2026 17:13

I've never done the tray each plus one and they've all been fine with it. I did briefly have a tray each before Boudi came along, although that wasn't planned, I've always had four out in the utility room.

Allergictoironing · 05/11/2026 18:41

So very much depends on the individual cats. I have 2, one upstairs and one downstairs for 2 cats. With the previous boy there was him and his litter sister and though there was always 2 trays available they never used one of them

DSis has 3 trays for 2 cats, and one will only poo in a clean tray. Plus both will pee in the woodchip, one prefers the woodchip for poo, and the clean freak (who doesn't bury) much prefers the Catsan.

My friend with 3 cats is currently on 5 trays.

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/11/2026 18:50

Whenever I was fostering two they were fine sharing a tray, but they always knew each other before coming to me.

Kirova · 05/11/2026 19:33

Five trays! Eek!

Mine use the Fukumaru tofu litter - it's very easy to remove the used bits and I usually do a scoop out in the morning and evening. But they seem to toilet outdoors more than indoors.

Nico is very precious about his litter tray and will often go in to rearrange the litter so that it meets his high standards - without actually using it...

Pudmyboy · 05/11/2026 20:04

Kirova does that mean, that maybe, just maybe, that gorgeous girl is ... maybe.... coming to you?🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Edited to add: fingers and toes crossed, but, no pressure!

He had issues with one of his boys resource guarding, including the litter trays 😒. He also had to use 3 different types of litter, very carefully arranged so the resource guarder wouldn't be able to guard 2 of the same type at the same time (sigh).

Mmmm, I'm in two minds! On one hand, I don't want to her to languish in foster for ages and I like to think she'd be happy here. But at the same time, she deserves a lovely home of her own, not sharing with two other cats in a not-especially-large flat. I'm also a little nervous about how they'd take to her.

I went to see her today and we had lovely cuddles. But she is super affectionate with everyone, so I can't really kid myself that she has a special bond with me or anything 😂

Broon how are you doing?

I'm doing quite well, really.
Gizmo is still puzzled by the absence of The White One.

I've had a delivery of cat food, which was placed before Linney died. OMG I've got so much now. Yes, I know Gizmo's greedy, but even he will struggle to get through the amount that arrived.

I'll give DD2 some. She's got Cleo and Sebastian to feed.

I hope all the Excellent Cats are coping with the fireworks okay.

Mine seem utterly unbothered. FC4 is in the new tunnel and FC3 is sitting on top of a pile of sport equipment washing her face. Which is quite remarkable considering that back in April or so, she would retreat under the sofa hissing at the sound of the front door of our building opening and closing. (I did try to explain that the door was the only way for people to get into the building, in which they live, but she still thought it very unreasonable.)

Cleo and Sebastian (who sound like protagonists of a Shakespeare play) are very cute.

CatsonPollock · 05/11/2026 22:54

Good to hear you and Gizmo are doing OK@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne How is Sebastian - Didn't he have a some issues? Or am I mixing the excellent cats up?

RumNotRun · 05/11/2026 23:01

The tribe have been upset by the fireworks tonight. Usually they aren't bothered but it was exceptionally loud tonight, even drowning out the TV. Boudicca hasn't made an appearance all day but the poor thing has probably been hiding from the bangs. I'm tempted to get a second camera to capture the doorway of one of the two rooms she must be in to try to see if I can spot her going in or out. At least there's always food, water, and clean litter trays downstairs so if she's just coming out in the dead of night then she'll still have something to eat etc.

Sebastian was ill with some sort of infection for a while but he's fine now.
It was Sebastian who made a leap off the examination table and landed behind the vet's laptop once.

Cleo has had a chequered career.
She went missing for a whole four months when she and DD2 lived in London.

Cleo also once removed a large piece of skirting board when she got in a temper about something. She also managed to pull an entire cat flap off a door.
Nobody really knew why she thought this was acceptable.
🤣

She's a very feisty cat, and she frequently adopts the Gizmo method of displaying herself.

The Kitty method!

My FC2 was a tortie who sounds a bit like Cleo. Feisty & very clever. Once she was adopted, her new owners had to barricade the cat flap for the first fortnight because she was determined to break through it.

She was also the only one I’ve had who I thought was going to manage to open the treat drawer.

I put two bags of treats on the coffee table today and then forgot about them.

Cue Gizmo discovering them and madly batting them round the floor, trying to get them open.
