Indoor cat got out last night. Have looked everywhere for her. Put posts out on the local fb group, nobody has seen her, she was on my ring doorbell this morning and has now disappeared. There’s no point continuing to look any more is there as she’s obviously gone. 😢. She’s got out a couple of times before and always found her way back but this time I just know she’s gone. You know when you know that kind of thing?

I very recently adopted an adult cat and through unexpected circs she got out through an upstairs window about five hours after getting her. She didn't know the area or me at all. I was searching, posting on Facebook, putting flyers through doors, going to find every black cat people said they had seen in my town etc for a week and pretty much gave up. A week later I got a call from someone who had just seen a black cat - and it was her! Literally just across the road from me. She had been in some sheds/woods there for a week

All the cat charities and vets kept saying to me that they don't go far, and they were right. If your cat has never been an outdoor cat it is probably scared somewhere and hiding

Mine was gone 7 long long days, I and my family went around shouting, rattling dreamies, searching anywhere she may have been spotted via a local group. Don’t give up, they may be trapped somewhere and near to hear you.

A friend of ours lost his indoor kitten (about six months old I think) during the summer.

She was found weeks later (after frantic searching and advertising etc) under a hedge yards from the house!

Our indoor cat escaped and we found him on day 12. Of course keep looking

The answer is "cat trap baited with sardines". Ask Cats Protection to borrow one.

Put your used bed sheet in the cat trap. It smells of you and your home. Between her getting hungry for the sardines and smelling you, she'll find the trap.

Indoor cats are usually terrified if they get out. They keep very quiet and don't respond to calls.

Is your cat back yet @KittyGone?

But it’s far more usual for the cat to not come back than it is for them to come back.

You only have to look at the number of cats that are killed on the roads each year to know that.

The positive stories are in the minority.

I think you're wrong - my experience is that lost cars get home more often than they don't!
Your best bet is to go out at night when it's quieter and your cat is more likely to hear you. Call for your car - they're likely to be hiding somewhere if they're not used to being outside.
Also, you're calling her an "indoor" cat - cats don't give a shit whether they're indoor or outdoor so hopefully she's also neutered....

24 hrs is no time for a cat. Definitely keep looking,

Slightly off topic but I really don't agree with indoor cats.

😿

I wonder if the OP is ever going to come back and update us? I really hope her cat has turned up - indoor cats often freak out at being outside because they haven't been allowed to get used to it gradually. It's probably hiding out somewhere very close.

I'm finding this thread very comforting with all the Returned Cats stories, as mine has gone missing for the second time this summer. Back in May/June, he started spending longer and longer away from home, pulling the occasional all-nighter and not returning until late the next day, and I had a feeling he was going to string his adventures together. And he did - he disappeared for 5 long days and nights and we were distraught. We did EVERYTHING that's always recommended, but in the end found him accidentally, while out leafletting a hamlet the other side of a vast field! By day 5 I think he was ready to come home and allowed us to pick him up and take him back. When we were ready to let him out again we put him in a GPS tracking collar and were horrified to see the extent of his range! And yes, he's neutered, though I often wonder if the vet missed one of them. He hadn't even lost much weight - he's an excellent hunter and was presumably living off voles, and maybe the odd sheep.

This time he's been gone less than 48 hours, but it's much colder at night and I'm worried about the feral little sod. This morning I went out just after dawn, and was out late last night, and four times yesterday. Now we know his range, at least we know better where to look.

Sadly, I suspect he's just not that into us (unlike his brother, who lives for his stomach and comes back to the house several times an hour, and also because of his deep affection for us) and he has a wild little soul. I imagine him grimly telling himself 'Nothing tastes as good as freedom feels' whenever he has a wobble out there.

My girl was gone for night on 3 months, 11 weeks. We put up posters, called all vets and refuges in area. We went door to door in all surrounding roads.

We had given up hope. Then she came through the cat flap. Skinny beyond belief. That is around 8 years ago now. She hasn’t wandered since. We suspect she may have been locked in someone’s shed, or stuck in an outbuilding somewhere.

So yes, sometimes, what appear to be miracles do happen. Also, someone could be feeding your cat, and wondering if they have a home. Don’t lose hope.
