My gorgeous cat put to sleep and I just can’t stop crying

We had our gorgeous British Blue girl Poppy put to sleep 2 days ago and I feel utterly lost; I just can’t stop crying. She was 15 and was just at the heart of our family. She came to us as a tiny kitten 7 weeks old and with then 4,6 and 8 year old boys, just settled into the rough and tumble from day one. As the years went by, she became a study companion passed from bedroom to bedroom through GCSEs, A levels and university exams. She was horrifically attacked just over 2 years ago by an absolute monster of a cat locally and staggered indoors where she collapsed with shock as the other cat had bitten through her facial nerve. Her heart almost stopped and it was only that my vet DH was at home that he started CPR and got her going after a very long and unresponsive 20 mins. She recovered and lived as an indoor cat with outdoors just being our sun terrace fenced in.

She then become very unwell with initially kidney disease that was well controlled but then developed a tumour on her liver. We did all we could and followed all the signs from her, and she really was becoming very unhappy even with all the meds. DH accompanied by another lovely vet friend put her to sleep on the terrace with the birds tweeting around her and she would have heard his voice too. She’s now buried in the garden by her favourite spot by our pond. But oh I miss her so so much.

That’s a natural reaction. You’re in shock and grief.

EmpressaurusKitty · 04/06/2026 21:30

Oh @One2threecats, I’m so sorry.

Frenchfemme · 04/06/2026 21:30

I am so so very sorry for your loss xxx.

She sounds lovely x

RandomMess · 04/06/2026 21:33

I’m so sorry we were all devastated when we lost our “nanny” cats who had been through everything with us and the DC. The grief gets less horrifically intense out they are still very much missed 5 years on with tears occasionally.

They will forever be our soul cats 💐

Ilovecrispytofu · 04/06/2026 21:34

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like your family gave her a wonderful life and she was very loved. 💐

Toddlerteaplease · 04/06/2026 21:34

It’s just the worst thing. Be kind to yourself.

Malariahilaria · 04/06/2026 21:35

Feel so sorry for you all. Its such a huge gap when they leave you. You gave her the best life she could have had, spoilt rotten I suspect as she should have been!

sunnydisaster · 04/06/2026 21:37

I’m so sorry 😔 our cat has been in our family for 13 years - youngest was 9 and he’s now 22. She’s not in the best of health and I’m dreading the end. It sounds like you have your cat a fantastic life -that’s all we can do. X

FairViewRosie25 · 04/06/2026 21:37

Oh you poor love my heart goes out. It’s been 9 years since my boy but his rose is going strong

Fleetheart · 04/06/2026 21:39

It is very sad when our cats leave us. I get that grief completely. My 19 year old had to be put to sleep earlier this year, and it’s really upsetting; it’s about saying goodbye to all those times with the family that you experienced with them. I’m going to scatter his ashes at the end of the garden and plant a little tree in his memory.

Myfridgeiscool · 04/06/2026 21:41

Oh OP this is sad news. She’s been through everything with you, she must have been full to the brim with all your love, lucky girl.
What was her name? Post a pic of your beautiful girl if you would like to share her beauty.

Pyjamatimenow · 04/06/2026 21:43

aww she sounds beautiful and like you gave her a lovely life. Rest in peace, Poppy

Despairsquid11 · 04/06/2026 21:47

I’m so so sorry, it’s so awful, they’re such huge parts of our families and lives. She had a long wonderful life with you and it ended surrounded by care and love to ensure no suffering, a final act of love. It’s so awful and I sympathise hugely, nothing will make it better, I guess the only thing that has helped me is reminding myself that the years of love were worth the pain. I wouldn’t have given them up to avoid the pain no matter how awful it is. Thinking of you.

What a beautiful girl 💕

tinyspiny · 04/06/2026 22:21

Sorry for your loss , in my experience losing a much loved pet is no different to losing any other close family member so take care and try to take comfort in the fact that she had a lovely life . 💐

cauliflowercheeseplease · 04/06/2026 22:25

I feel you. My British shorthair was pts aged 20. She had a big tumour on her liver that eventually just started to crush her organs . We had no idea until I took her to the vet as she was off her food. We had another two weeks with her before we made the kind decision. Worst thing was at the vets on the day we said goodbye, she decided to become kitten like again and started headbutting me and purring. I’m sure she was telling me I was making the right decision and saying thank you. She was the best cat. Snuck out 2 weeks before we were getting her neutered and got blooming pregnant. Then did it again 🤭. She had 8 beautiful kittens ( both litters combined). She was the most snobbish, aloof, independent cat ever but wild still come for a cheeky cuddle. It’s been 7 years believe it or not but I still miss her
