Neighbour fed my cat and took him to the vet

I know I'm talking to the sensible here.
I've recently had to have my lovely boy pts. He was a roaming rascal that had to have his tail removed previously. He was also a lazy groomer so needed me to bath him on occasion too - not fun for him or me! But he was ours and was loved.

Anyway, I got a text a couple of weeks ago from a neighbour, who even after repeated telling by me to NOT feed him, had done so for a couple of years. He spent some time sat in her garden enjoying the sun. She knew I was his owner. She had my contact number and knows where I live.

She'd decided to take him to a vet as he had been unwell in her garden for 24 hours. She hadn't contacted me before this at all to tell me as I would of gone straight there to get him.

I called the vets, they'd done bloods and he was in kidney failure so I made the sad decision to pts. I couldn't get there before they would close for the day so I wasn't even there to give him strokes and love.

Adding to this, at the weekend I came across a fb post from the vets that they'd posted at the time, stating they had him and to call them as he was unwell. Comments underneath included some very strange or hurtful comments, including someone sharing my address and that I had 'abandoned' him. Thankfully the vets removed the post straight away when I called them.

Who the hell does this?

Things I've learnt:

Check your cat's chip is registered - my boy had been chipped years ago but for some reason the vet I'd used hadn't completed the registration or told me I had to complete the registration. It's been a pain but I've now got my other cats registered to me so it doesn't happen again.

Do not feed cats that don't belong to you. There are so many other means to care for a cat who you think it lost/abandoned/unwell. Posting on local fb groups get cats reunited really quickly usually. Or if you know the owner, tell them their cat is at yours. Any responsible cat owner would appreciate that.

Your neighbor took care of your cat while you didn’t.

Well, she clearly crossed a line, but if it hadn't been for her you wouldn't have known kitty was very ill would you?

I'm sorry you lost your cat. R.I.P. kitty. Flowers

Gingernaut · 02/06/2026 12:29

Your cat was obviously sick and your neighbour so concerned, that she/he took him to the vet

If it hadn't been for your neighbour, your cat may well have died outdoors, in pain and left you wondering where he was

Your neighbour did a good thing

No, the neighbour should have phoned op to let her know the cat was in her garden and unwell, you would only take a random cat to the vet if you didn't know who his owner was and this neighbour did know.

Cromoton · 02/06/2026 12:30

So happy your cat was attended to in their time of need. So sorry for your loss.

SilenceInside · 02/06/2026 12:30

It's weird that she didn't contact you at all despite saying the cat had been obviously unwell in her garden for 24 hours and knowing it was your cat and how to contact you. Instead she left the cat for hours but then took him to the vet herself. That's just really weird. Surely much more appropriate to contact you to come and get him yourself.

Passingthrough123 · 02/06/2026 12:32

I'm so sorry for your loss. She should've called you. She had your number, so there was zero excuse for her not to. Not calling meant you lost the opportunity to say goodbye to your cat and there was no one he knew with him at the end, which must be heartbreaking for you.

I'd have to say something to her.

Day 1 At some point she noticed he was unwell, left him in her garden overnight (didn't call or text me). Day 2 late morning took him to the vets and left him there, drove home, then called me. She had many opportunities to think, I'll call the owner to tell her. She didn't. It would be a last resort for me to take a cat I knew wasn't mine (but I knew who the owner was and had contact info for) to a vets before trying everyway I could to let the owner know.

The vets didn't charge for the tests as they'd done them on their own. I obviously paid for PTS and cremation.

@Youtookyourtime why would they think the cat's being neglected? Just because it was unwell? It's a bit of a leap to assume neglect! And it's just plain weird to ignore the unwell cat for 24 hours before taking any action at all.

But the neighbour knew he hadn't been, because OP had been in touch on numerous occasions to ask her not to feed him because he was already fed at home. The neighbour has been neglectful in not contacting OP about HER cat.

Are you my neighbour? How do you know that?

He was as healthy as he could be, he was getting on a bit. He ate and drank well, was happy and contented. But you make a fair point of recognising signs. I'm off to google.

Wasn’t you conceded that your cat was gone for so long?

Specialneedsnightmare · 02/06/2026 12:38

I'm confused though- you couldn't get to the vet before they closed?

The neighbour was clearly worried about the cat.

My cat has ckd and there are signs from early on.

SilenceInside · 02/06/2026 12:38

If the neighbour was concerned about the wellbeing of the cat, why did she leave it for 24 hours before doing anything?

totally appreciate that, but it still doesn't explain why she chose not to contact me earlier than she did.

Ravenous appetite, weight loss, drinking loads.
