How much does your cat eat a day?

My cat is 3. He’s always been a very hungry cat and was eating 3 pouches a day, morning afternoon and night, plus biscuits in between. He will also eat any food that is in the bin or left on the side or steals food off my daughter’s plate when she’s eating. My neighbour texted me to say he’d stolen a whole steak from her kitchen that she was about to cook.

I can’t really afford the 3 pouches a day so have cut him down to half a pouch in the morning, afternoon and night plus his biscuits. But because of how much he loves food I feel like this isn’t enough.

our cat was the same and vet put him on a hypoallergenic feed. It has changed everything and he is no.longer under my feet going mad as if he is starving to.death every minute of the day.
Turns out he wasn't absorbing the food properly so always hungry.
You could try it as you can buy it over the counter as it were. we use the royal canin which works out at 30 pounds a month.

Goldenboysmum · 23/01/2026 07:01

My Frankie has 5 pouches of Harringtons a day.

Breakfast 1 at 5am
Breakfast 2 around 9 am
Lunch 1pm
Dinner 6pm
Supper 10pm

He's a big boy but not fat around 8kg

No dry food, an occasional treat but will steal food left right and centre if he gets a chance!

He's an indoor cat now but was found on the street so not sure if that's why he eats a lot.

RinklyRomaine · 23/01/2026 07:04

My 3 have a pouch each morning and night, kibble every other day or so if they are hungry. Two small
girls who eat a fair amount and a big ginger boy who eats their leftovers, whatever he can catch or steal, next doors dog food if he sees it, any meat scraps from us. He just loves food and it balances out.

Blanketenvy · 23/01/2026 07:10

1/2 pouch in morning 1/2 at night and biscuits available all day. They also have a few dental biscuits at night and probably a few treats most days. But they don't overeat and often don't even finish the small amount of wet food they are given.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/01/2026 07:16

My two cats who are the perfect weight according to the vet eat half a pouch of wet food each and unlimited biscuits. I get really good quality ones.
The young cat also hunts and brings home rodents for the geriatric cat to eat. She offers them up to her. The old cat likes to eat raw mice but cant hunt any more. Its quite cute really.

Iheartmysmart · 23/01/2026 07:22

My kitten has around 180g of raw food a day plus a few biscuits. But she’ll only eat the biscuits if they are scattered on the floor, won’t touch them out of a bowl. Unfortunately she also likes to bat the biscuits around so they go everywhere!

It might be worth getting your cat checked for thyroid issues. I had a cat who was always hungry and he was diagnosed with a thyroid problem, needed medication and eventually surgery.

That’s interesting. What is the name of the food?

God I have two cats and they have one pouch each a day. Dry food always available. They only really lick the jelly off the wet food anyway. Both only 3kg but always have been and same when we got them

giddyboo · 23/01/2026 01:41

How often do you need to worm them with eating rats? My cat hunts rats and the vet said they get worms from rats so they need to be wormed every 6 weeks.

I do them every two to three months. They do get worms, but a vet friend of mine said it's better to space out things like worm and flea treatments as long as possible, rather than overload the animals with chemicals.

vanillaskin · 23/01/2026 12:06

Cat tax. He was 7.5kg but he’s lost some weight and has more to go
I can’t really cut him down much more from 2 x 80g tins

Wow @vanillaskin he’s gorgeous. A proper house panther. My little rescue is totally black, don’t think I’ve seen a single white hair on her.

Old cat: 1 pouch and free access to kibble. Was fussy.

New cat: I starve her. She eats several pouches a day and lets me know that I am not giving her enough treats. If she really is desperate she'll eat kibble.
I'm the meanest person in the world if I don't share my food (and have the scars to prove it).

LilyFeather · 23/01/2026 14:44

She probably averages one pouch a day, half given in the morning and half in the evening. Plus high quality biscuits

shes 12 and just over 3kg so quite small and she has never been a big eater and she’s incredibly fussy to boot. However she will eat as much cheese and treats as she can get her chops on!

One pouch at breakfast, another one at 6pm, but he has dry biscuits (Go Cat) always available in his bowl.

We are the same. I have a 3 year old cat. X

KittenKaboodle · 23/01/2026 19:21

mine gets daily:

1.5 cans of Untamed in gravy
15-20g Scrumbles dry food
Couple of Dreamies and a bedtime lick-e-lix
Field mouse à la carte (quantity varies)

She is a young, active outdoor cat, weighs just under 4kg but she’s small and the vet told us not to let her gain weight so we try not to feed her more than that. She has been known to be denied food, go out and return 5 mins later with a mouse, which she’ll either pointedly dump by her (empty) bowl or crunch up loudly in someone’s bedroom.

hollyandribbon · 24/01/2026 00:29

AllTheChaos · 22/01/2026 23:36

Aye, @hollyandribbon, wondering how tiny some of these cats are! Mine is massive, as in long, plus a bit fat ☺️

I’m pretty sure she’s part Maine Coon, she’s huge and has a mane, fluffy toe beans and some other characteristics. They were rescues so it’s hard to know for sure!

bunnygrav3 · 24/01/2026 00:47

1/6 of a 400g can twice a day plus a large handful of biscuits. Look at calories in the food and the ideal intake for your cats weight and go from there

Lunde · 24/01/2026 01:04

Daisychain67 · 20/01/2026 09:06

Please tell me how 1.5 pouches a day plus biscuits plus whatever other food he finds is animal abuse? 😂😂😂

On the box of the pouches that our cats eat it says a 4kg cat should have 3-4 pouches a day.

Our 6kg cat eats 2-3 plus a liquid tube, plus dried food plus stuff he "finds" (this time last year he was a stray grabbing fatballs from the birds)

The tiny cat 2.8 kg - eats 1-2 pouches plus dry food

The 3.4kg cat eats 2 pouches, dry food plus her weight in Dreamies

HouseAshamed · 24/01/2026 01:45

@Lunde , the feeding guidelines vary but generally cats will let you know if they're hungry. Mine aren't that keen on Dreamies but love Lik-e-Lix.
DCat prefers cheese to treats/cat food.

(DCat is the preferred cat. I have other cats too.)

ProfessionalPirate · 24/01/2026 14:21

Money is not really an acceptable criteria for deciding how much to feed your cat. Some cats will eat more than others, depending on their size, activity levels and metabolism. So whatever answers you get on here are going to be meaningless in the context of your cat. Is he a healthy weight? Has his weight changed since you reduced his ration?

Inextremis · 24/01/2026 14:50

This magnificent beast (Clive) is a feral cat I've been feeding since he arrived last July. He lives in our shed (where I've put an insulated cat house for him, with a cozy pad to sleep on), and comes to eat twice a day - around 10 am he'll have one pouch, some Dreamies, some kibble and any leftovers we have going (today it was sea bass skin). He eats again around 3 pm - another pouch, kibble and Dreamies. In between he attempts - and usually fails - to catch birds, and he keeps the rat and mouse population down too - we're very rural. He was quite skinny and matted when he turned up - now much improved, but he's still very shy - I've touched him twice, don't think he's ever going to be a domesticated cat!
