How much does your cat eat a day?

Daisychain67 · 20/01/2026 00:39

My cat is 3. He’s always been a very hungry cat and was eating 3 pouches a day, morning afternoon and night, plus biscuits in between. He will also eat any food that is in the bin or left on the side or steals food off my daughter’s plate when she’s eating. My neighbour texted me to say he’d stolen a whole steak from her kitchen that she was about to cook.

I can’t really afford the 3 pouches a day so have cut him down to half a pouch in the morning, afternoon and night plus his biscuits. But because of how much he loves food I feel like this isn’t enough.

i have two Maine Coons and the male is big. He always seems happy to eat but only ‘asks’ for food at mealtimes. They get two pouches a day, one morning one mid afternoon, and dry kibble freely available. I dint really know how much of that they eat. Not hunters other than the odd fly. They are slim (but hairy). I can’t believe no one has asked for the cat tax! Here is my big boy.

my friend's cat is a 3 pouches a day + snacks cat and he'll yowl if a meal is late! He's not even a big cat, but young and quite active.
Ours is an indoor cat and lazy AF and just gets dry food topped up as and when it runs out or is very low in the bowl. He doesn't really have a fixed eating pattern, he'll be yowling at an empty dish but even when you fill it up he doesn't necessarily eat straight away and he often eats most overnight.

Callistamon62 · 20/01/2026 13:56

I have 2 females, both on the small side. They share a pouch in the morning topped with maybe a dozen biscuits and have a pouch each at night. Then a few biscuits at bedtime. A few dreamies now & then too. All cats are different, one of mine never eats it all, the other cleans both bowls.

TeaRoseTallulah · 20/01/2026 14:12

4-6 pouches a day ,no dry food at all.

Paperwhite209 · 20/01/2026 14:18

I have two girls (sisters) approaching 8yo and they're indoor cats.

They have a pouch each morning and early evening, and about an eggcup-ful each of dried food during the day and before bed.

They are equally enthusiastic about their food and similarly active but despite being related are like Little and Large 😂

1small tin of untamed each a day, 1 stick of lick e lick type treat and a few dried chicken pieces.

high quality food with a decent meat content will mean your cat eats much less.

Daisychain67 · 20/01/2026 17:05

Thanks everyone glad to see I’m not the only one absolutely ‘neglecting’ and ‘abusing’ he’s ate hjs 1.5 pouches today and some biscuits and a little bit of gammon and a rat, I sure hope he doesn’t die of starvation

We have a feral cat who we feed daily as and when she turns up. Usually 4-5 pouches a day. Her record is 9.

Nincompoo · 20/01/2026 19:34

3 or 4 pouches and as many biscuits as she likes.

She lives outside, though (through choice) So if she asks for food and she gets it… she needs to keep warm.

Purplebunnie · 20/01/2026 19:38

40g of dry per day plus half a pouch at night - 2 cats. Both could do with loosing a tiny bit of weight - they're in a lot at the moment but will go out more in the summer and run it off. If it is of importance 8 years old brothers, snipped.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/01/2026 19:56

Boy cat aged three - he’s not mad for wet food but generally gets one pouch of Sheba and one tin of Untamed a day, plus a mix of Go Cat and Royal Canin biscuits. He often eats all the Untamed, but wouldn’t if we gave him two tins of that a day, generally eats all the biscuits.

He gets bits of human food, eg we had a roast chicken at the weekend, two Dreamies after he’s been brushed after dinner, and often a “chicken yoghurt” mid morning if I’m home.

Mothership4two · 21/01/2026 08:48

Two thirds of a tin a day plus a handful of dried food. Plus what he catches - usually at least one mice per day, maybe more. He's a big boy, but is definitely not thin.

poorchurchmouse · 21/01/2026 13:10

Two scoops of kibble a day plus a pouch of wet food. She is a bit fat (4.5 kg, and she’s quite a small cat) and incredibly food-motivated- you can be sure she’ll always be under the table at our mealtimes.

LadyDanburysHat · 21/01/2026 13:15

It really depends on how big your cat is and how active. When you say some biscuits (I assume you mean dry food) is this free access to dry food, or only a set amount?

My cat is 5.5kg, and he is slim, a big boy. He has a pouch morning and night and free access to dry food. He also hunts quite prolifically. If he is looking for it we will give an extra pouch as they reduced the size of them a few months ago, but he doesn't want more than 3 pouches most of the time. However a small 4kg cat would need less.

4-6 pouches a day ,no dry food at all.

So glad it’s not just me who appears to have a mega greedy cat 🙈

She won’t touch dry food, her “sister” eats dry food though. They are both around 3.

AllTheChaos · 22/01/2026 23:36

Aye, @hollyandribbon, wondering how tiny some of these cats are! Mine is massive, as in long, plus a bit fat ☺️

Mine is too 🤣. But vet said he's not overweight. He's an outdoor cat, proper hunter (rats/birds). I refer to him as the toddler because he is nearly the size of one!

Kaggi9 · 23/01/2026 00:05

We have a big ginger boy, 5 and a half and neutered. He has dried food and snacks available all day, and asks for pouches when he wants them. Some days it might be one, other days it’s 6! He’s a good weight and very active and doesn’t overeat. He’ll walk away when he’s had enough.

He’ll attack you for ham though!

TroysMammy · 23/01/2026 00:22

Not as much as he would like to. He weighs 6.3kg (1 stone) and he has his jabs next week and I know the vet won't be amused. I feed him diet food and the occasional treat so I'm making my partner come because he's the one who keeps on feeding him chicken, tuna, Sheba type treats and anything else the cat fancies. Hopefully the vet can get it through to his thick skull that the cat is fat.

DumpedByText · 23/01/2026 00:24

I have two cats, they have one small tin of Untamed wet food each in the morning and 25g of dry Royal Canine kibble in the evening.

They would eat double that, but they are both a bit chunky!

Contrarymary30 · 23/01/2026 00:27

WinterBlues26 · 20/01/2026 01:38

How many pouches will mostly depend on his size so how heavy is he? Although if he was hungry on 3 full pouches a day and you've halved that amount then maybe you need to have a serious think about whether you should rehome him. Deliberately underfeeding an animal is abuse.

Yes my thoughts exactly.

giddyboo · 23/01/2026 01:41

CoolFineDoneWicked · 20/01/2026 00:53

We have two six-year-old male cats, neutered. They have a handful of grain-free kibble twice a day and that's it, but they hunt a lot, so they make up the rest of their diet in rats. They're both on the fatsome side, as cats tend to get at that age, because they spend 90% of the time asleep.

How often do you need to worm them with eating rats? My cat hunts rats and the vet said they get worms from rats so they need to be wormed every 6 weeks.

Missey85 · 23/01/2026 05:05

My cat eats 3 pouches a day 💕

Inthefuturenow · 23/01/2026 06:49

40-50g complete dry food, she's a petite 3.3kg and has never liked wet food.
You really shouldn't feed 'biscuits' ad lib, that's how cats get overweight.
There are lots of online calculators you can you use to determine how many calories your cat needs, then you need to consider how many are in the dry food and the wet food.

Vanillaplains · 23/01/2026 06:54

My cat is 7 and neutered she has 55g of Purina Pro Plan Steralised a day and 5-10 dreamies. She won't entertain wet food. I put the 55g out and she grazes all day usually finishing the food in the early hours. I feed her at 6am usually.

I forgot to add my cat is around 12.5lb she does go out but not far I lock her in at night and she has never really been a hunter.
