Do they have the run of the house? Do you close all bedroom doors? Shut them in a room?

Kitchen here, he has a bed in there but rarely sleeps on it, preferring the kitchen chairs. His flap is locked overnight but opens automatically at 6am. He happily trots through there come bedtime so I think he's fine with the system.

Our old house was open plan downstairs so we had no option but to give him the run of the place - it was fine until we had DS and then he'd hear us moving around and come and badger at the door all night (even once DS had started sleeping through).

hexsnidgett · 20/01/2026 09:17

We are less strict with our cat these days, but mostly she sleeps in her bed next to the radiator in the kitchen with the door shut. When it's minus numbers outside we leave the door open and sometimes she will sleep in the spare room.
I love her, but not at 2 in the morning having a scratch at the end of the bed!

Favouritefruits · 20/01/2026 09:20

I shut the cat flap at night but the girls have the run of the house they tend to sleep in my husband wardrobe or the radiator bed until about 1 or 2 then they must get cold as they get in my bed!

blankcanvas3 · 20/01/2026 09:27

Run of the house but he generally chooses to sleep down the side of the bed on my side. And then from about 5am every morning he harasses me until i get up.

bunnylegs · 20/01/2026 09:38

It’s not a dealbreaker if a cat prefers the run of the house/to sleep in my bed at night I was more curious to know if it was something that was normal for some.

Ours are shut in the kitchen overnight so they have access to their cat flap and there’s a sofa in there for them to sleep on, though they usually sleep on the dining chairs. We can’t let them have the run of the house as my big boy is a prolific hunter (at least a mouse a night) and I can cope with entrails on a tiled floor but not on the carpet.

As a first time cat owner, I remember going to look at our two cats at the rescue centre and we were told we could take them straight away. I said that we needed to go to the pet shop first to buy them beds, as we didn’t have anywhere for them to sleep. The staff member was kind enough not to laugh, as she explained that cats can and do sleep anywhere and everywhere and they will select their own spot. We still went out and spent £50 on two of those cosy igloo type beds. Neither cat ever slept in one. Our boy cat slept for years in an old shoebox full of the children’s colouring pencils!

FirstDayonthePlanet · 20/01/2026 10:05

Run of the house except x2 DCs bedrooms.
Mostly she sleeps on my legs. Sometimes she doesn’t appear, but I’m not sure where she goes instead because as soon as I arise she comes running up so I don’t ‘catch’ her in whatever spot she’s chosen.
The cat flap locks overnight, so she’s not outside.

ImFineItsAllFine · 20/01/2026 10:29

Cat has the run of downstairs at night (with cat flap access to outside). As far as I know he sleeps on the sofa and also goes out to hunt.

If he gets in the bedroom he keeps us awake by snoring and he will bite me on the back of the head at 5 AM wanting breakfast. If we shut the bedroom door he howls and scratches at it.

Blueuggboots · 20/01/2026 03:06

My cats both sleep in between my legs on the bed.
one of them does like to wake me up by tickling my face with her whiskers then gets under the duvet with me.

Your hip flexibility must be off the scale @Blueuggboots -that's 2 Bengals you've got there!

Oh wow thanks everyone, so many wonderful replies about your masters!

We are thinking of a rescue cat and obviously they will be boss, but I was just curious to know if cats can be left downstairs. Growing up we had cats all the time who had the run of the house, but now I’m not so keen to have one wake me up as I’m struggling with sleep (menopause) and work early shifts sometimes. I know it will depend on the cat but it’s reassuring to know that some cats don’t have access to bedrooms/upstairs overnight.

Wait till I end up with a floofball in my bed

Check whether they can open doors.

One of mine is sufficiently stupid that she will meowl piteously if the door is not sufficiently ajar for her to fit through, but her sister is quite clever and can open most of the doors in the house, so shutting her away isn't that easy.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2026 12:21

Run of the house but usually sleeps on my bed.

boxofbuttons · 20/01/2026 12:31

They all have run of the house. One sleeps by my feet, one wedges himself under a dressing table (no idea why, plenty of beds to sleep on), and one sleeps on the sofa downstairs. They're very particular about it, haha.

partialsoup · 20/01/2026 12:33

I bed with me, I don't have an issue with them sharing my bed. they are indoor cats during the winter when they want to fet in bed so not dirty.

justsaying2023 · 20/01/2026 15:01

Has the run of the house, starts the night announcing bedtime by yowling at us and sitting on the stairs. From 11:00 until 3 she sleeps on the landing under the radiator or on towels and occasionally on the top step - she will always meow loudly so you know where she is before you step on her, she thinks falling is funny but she isn't a monster!!
from 3:30ish she sleeps in bed with me behind my knees and starts checking me for signs of life from about 7am

Where does you cat sleep at night?
steppemum · 20/01/2026 15:18

run of the house.
plus cat flap.

Anyone who doesn't want them shuts their door. Bedroom doors are often shut in the daytime due to dog, so the cats don't cry/fuss/scratch to come in to any bedrooms. (but they do cry/fuss/scratch to go OUT if door is shut)
Sleep on our bed, or on sofa, or dd's bed (she has a baby gate so cat can come in and dog can't!!)

Alltheyellowbirds · 20/01/2026 15:19

On my bed. One next to my head, one down by my feet.

Whosthetabbynow · 20/01/2026 15:22

On my head

robinsnest1967 · 20/01/2026 15:22

Next to me or on my chest 😀

maudelovesharold · 20/01/2026 15:26

Run of the house with kitchen door and our bedroom door shut. He has a catflap, and food/drink out, so can come and go as he pleases. He often sleeps on a spare bed or on sofas. If ds3 is back, the cat gets a cosy inhabited bed to sleep on, as ds is the only member of the family who can accommodate a cat sprawled almost the full width of a double bed, and still sleep!

AnonKat · 20/01/2026 15:29

Cat 1 on the spare bed under a blanket or in our bed when its cold.
Cat 2 on her scratch pole in the living room or on the back of the chair.

They have access to everywhere.

Grizelofthechaletschool · 20/01/2026 15:31

Cat has a tendency to bring live mice into our bedroom at 2am so she’s often shut downstairs. Think she sleeps on fluffy sofa blanket or - shock! - in her bed

GreenMarigold · 20/01/2026 15:31

Mine both tend to be out at night. If they do come in then they usually sleep on the beds or on warm floorboards if the heating has been on. One of my cats likes to sleep on top of the laundry bin sometimes.

Oldraver · 20/01/2026 15:52

They mostly have the run of the house though usually shit them out of the kitchen/diner as they try to break through the cat flap

Trev sleeps on the corner of my bed, Trina sleeps next to or in-between my legs

LostThestral · 20/01/2026 16:00

on the bed at the moment shoved up against my legs or across the bedroom threshold in the summer when it's too warm on the bed
