Do they have the run of the house? Do you close all bedroom doors? Shut them in a room?

Our bed, which is quite sweet as the cat joins us even if we left him sleeping downstairs. House is closed up apart from the kitchen (with cat flap to come and go as he pleases) and our bedroom because the bugger brings mice in and I need to keep them contained to one room downstairs only if he loses them!

maddiemookins16mum · 20/01/2026 07:03

One sleeps on the Sky Box, the other on the office chair. Sky Box cat also sleeps on me 50% of the time.

MinestroneMacaroni · 20/01/2026 07:04

My cat doesn’t sleep at night. He sleeps between 9am and 8pm then gets up and goes out all night, presumably to the cat pub.

DivorcedButHappyNow · 20/01/2026 07:04

Downstairs. They’d prefer upstairs but boy cat especially would start yowling at 4am for breakfast which is no good.

Mumsworkneverdone · 20/01/2026 07:06

two cats on bed with me , I have an electric blanket that keeps us all cozy. Husbands in his bedroom!

EmpressaurusKitty · 20/01/2026 07:07

Run of the flat. She likes to sleep under the duvet during the day & at the end of the bed at night.

Ours are shut downstairs at night. They have free run of the living room and kitchen and access to the sofa, their beds, their scratching posts, water and litter trays.

HighburyHope · 20/01/2026 07:12

Run of the house, but by about 4am he will have curled up on top of me. Usually on my bladder.

mondaytosunday · 20/01/2026 07:16

They are confined to downstairs (full run of living room, kitchen/diner and free access to the garden). I learned long ago that unless I wanted a 4.30am breakfast alarm that they need to be away from me where I can’t hear them. They sleep on the sofa, cat climbing thing, dining chair or often outside on top of the shed or extension roof. They seem fine with it as they don’t rush the door when I leave them and are often outside when I come down in the morning. They come in as soon as I call them.
@NettleTeamy cats hated KatKin and my neighbours across the way tried to offload their first purchase as their cats hated it too!

toomuchcrapeverywhere · 20/01/2026 07:20

One sleeps on my pillow. The other sleeps in the bed tucked in behind my knees. No, it doesn’t lead to a restful night’s sleep.

vanillaskin · 20/01/2026 07:24

With me, under the duvet. He pats at the duvet until I lift it up then does this OOF noise as he shoves himself right against me

martha79 · 20/01/2026 07:28

One settles down on the carpet just outside the bathroom (I think there's a heating/ hot water pipe under the floor there) - have to be careful to dodge her if you get up in the night. The other one in a cat bed next to the radiator in a spare room. They take turns at coming into my bed during the night though and I often wake up to find a cat sprawled across me. Can't close any doors as they will scratch/ batter/ howl at them.

Bigbus · 20/01/2026 07:34

Ours are downstairs in the kitchen/living room - they have sofas, comfy chairs, food, water and the cat flap to go in and out. I can’t have them in the rest of the house because they will wake my somewhere between 4.30 and 5.30 and I really need to sleep more than that. It’s a shame because I really like them sleeping on my bed so any tips to get them to leave me alone for longer would be appreciated!

MrsBridgetMcClusky · 20/01/2026 07:37

We keep our cat in the kitchen with her bed, water, and litter. We keep all the door shut at night as a precaution if there was a fire.

bathsmat · 20/01/2026 07:40

Ours goes up to bed with the dc and sleeps with the eldest.

bunnylegs · 20/01/2026 07:42

Oh wow thanks everyone, so many wonderful replies about your masters!

We are thinking of a rescue cat and obviously they will be boss, but I was just curious to know if cats can be left downstairs. Growing up we had cats all the time who had the run of the house, but now I’m not so keen to have one wake me up as I’m struggling with sleep (menopause) and work early shifts sometimes. I know it will depend on the cat but it’s reassuring to know that some cats don’t have access to bedrooms/upstairs overnight.

If you go to a rescue where all the cats are fostered in volunteers’ homes, they should be able to give you an idea of sleeping habits - I had some fosters who preferred to sleep in the living room, others in a cat bed in the bedroom & others snuggled up with me.

Alongthetowpath · 20/01/2026 07:56

In cold weather, she prefers to be on a bed, where she skilfully manoeuvres the original occupant into a cramped position at the edge so she can sprawl in comfort on the biggest expanse of duvet.
She graciously rotates around, tending to stay a few weeks with one person, then on to the next - though dc1 wisely closes the bedroom door at night.

In warm weather she prefers a range of different spots - under the bed, on the landing, on the rug in our bedroom, in the bathroom on the bath mat, on a windowsill, or under dc2’s desk chair.

I often wonder what leads to her decision each night. She strides off purposely at around 10pm each evening, as though it’s been pre-arranged.

shellyleppard · 20/01/2026 07:59

3 cats. Usually the beds, my pillow. One currently favouring the basket with the winter hats and gloves. One asleep on eldest sons bed. The other back of the sofa

On my ankles, I wake up and momentarily think I have had some kind of paralysis, but it's just a fat cat. He goes in with ds until I go to bed

My old cat was banished to the living room/kitchen as he was so noisy! My current one just sleeps under the duvet and looks offended if you wake him up. He basically happily snores next to me all night

Definitely make sure you ask the rescue if this is important to you!

When I went to the rescue to collect my little bugger (it was COVID so all online before that point) he was there scratching on the pen door and then he mounted a great escape when they tried to get him in the carrier. He is a cat that will not tolerate a closed door under any circumstances, he goes quite crazy! This is fine for us (except when I'm in the bath and he insists on getting in the bathroom to sit on the side of the bath), but wouldn't be ideal if you were hoping to keep one downstairs as he will hurl himself against a door.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 20/01/2026 08:32

Mine have the run of the house. 2 sleep on my bed, the kitten is still separated at night (I have my window open all night and the big cats go in and out that way, kitten not allowed out yet) so sleeps in my youngest's room.

Nourishinghandcream · 20/01/2026 08:41

They would both sleep on (or in) the bed.
Mine curled up by my feet, my OH's would curl up on his pillow.

During a warm summer night, his would occasionally curl up in the middle of the lawn.

SkankingWombat · 20/01/2026 08:44

Run of the house here too.
Our senior cat prefers my pillow in the winter, but will sometimes choose under our bed or the living room sofa. In summer it tends to be the sofa or, on very hot nights, a flowerbed.
The 2 youngsters rotate between a human's bed (whichever looks best on the day), the cat tree, the office chair, the sofa, DD1's wardrobe, the Ikea dolls bed a PP also has, our clean laundry boxes, and the floor at the top of the stairs. On cold nights it is always a human's bed though.
