She’s gone for her second stage dental. The plan is to take all her teeth out. As long as they don’t cause trauma getting them out. I think they are bothering her. So fingers crossed she feels better.

She’s got an infection. Had some antibiotics, and some stronger painkillers. If she doesn’t eat by tomorrow then back to the vet for a feeding tube, as she can’t be left any longer. The painkiller need to be rubbed into her gums. Okaaaaay then. 😹😹. She cooperated with the vet, not sure she’ll be as obliging at home.

Oh dear , poor Pen , hope she feels better soon .

MiGataCalico · 19/11/2025 16:06

Oh poor Penelope, but at least she can't bite you...

ThelmaDinkley · 19/11/2025 18:27

Aw I hope she gets better soon bless her.

AlwaysRightISwear · 19/11/2025 18:46

Poor little Pen, it's never simple with her, is it.

umberpigeon · 19/11/2025 20:07

Sorry to hear about Penelope’s infection - hope she’s better soon 😞

we’ve ended up having a rather rocky ride post surgery. After a seemingly good recovery initially, my cat today had a cloudy eye. She had to go back in for post surgery check so I mentioned it and to cut a long story short it’s suspected uveitis and I have to take her to a specialist tomorrow in a different city.

didn’t see this coming, have no idea if insurance covers it (tooth extraction wasn’t), and no idea what outcome will be. I’m just glad we caught it on day 1. And looks like it might be connected to the surgery somehow. Just feel very sad and worried about it all and am trying not to cry in front of the kids

Toddlerteaplease · 19/11/2025 20:36

@umberpigeonmy first thought was an ulcer caused by eyes drying out during surgery. That’s what caused madams recurrent ulcers. I made sure they made sure her eyes were shut during the op. She’s clearly more comfortable on the new pain killers but still not eating or drinking. Didn’t drink out of her favourite completely mankey garden bowl. I’ve provisionally booked an appointment for tomorrow. Will cancel if she eats.

I think the painkiller went in the right place! It tastes horrible so she’s not impressed!

Oh the poor babies... Both of them.
My vet told me that cats recover usually quite well from having all their teeth removed, he told me that he once saw a toothless cat "gum a mouse" and was still quite the hunter. He said that if they have severe oral issues and the teeth can't be cleaned or saved, as drastic as removing the teeth seems to us, that most cats recover and live far better lives compared to the complications of really bad oral issues. Hoping you're beautiful pussycats are feeling better soon.

Keep an eye out for dehydration, did they give you a syringe by any chance so that you can gently squirt a dribble of water or even kitten milk in? It's not that you want to force feed them, it's just you don't want them to get dehydrated and then they'll really not eat anything cuz they'll feel so crummy.

learieonthewildmoor · 20/11/2025 02:36

So stressful for you, Toddler. Thinking of you and Pen. Xxo

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 09:19

She’s much more comfortable, the nasty smell has gone.shes going to have a naso-gastric tube fitted. I had no idea it was even possible in cats!! I was expecting a tube in her throat which is what magic had. Good job I am NG trained!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 10:10

@StruggleFlourishtried syringe feeding. It wasn’t successful. And I don’t want to give her an oral aversion. We do cleft lip and palate surgery so I’m well used to babies not feeding 🤣🤣

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 16:25

She’s got the tube and is leaving it alone. However got home and the bloody tube is blocked. Got the drug to stimulate her appetite in but nothing else. So we are back at the vet for unblocking. The fluids and calories that she’s had have done the trick and she’s much brighter!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 17:28

She’s got a larger tube, so given her some more feed. She’s had a dose of mirtazipine and she’s tried some biscuits and has had a lil e lix! I’m really pleased.

Poor Penelope.

Puppylucky · 20/11/2025 17:40

I'm so sorry as I know it's horrible for Penelope but that's got to be one of my favourite photos ever! Kudos to you for keeping the tube on her and big kisses to poor sad little Pen

MiGataCalico · 20/11/2025 18:17

Oh thank goodness she's trying to eat.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 19:03

I’m surprised she went for biscuits first. She loves Thrive tuna and salmon.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 20:13

the feed has lumps in so
its tricky to get down the tube. She’s wearing some. She really needs a bath 🤣🤣

tinyspiny · 20/11/2025 21:46

She looks terrifically unimpressed in that photo , hope she starts eating soon

umberpigeon · 20/11/2025 21:55

Oh gosh - poor Penelope 😞

we have gone from bad to worse here - saw consultant today who concluded eye problem likely related to dental surgery (needle went too close to eye) and it’s very likely she will lose her eye. Going to try meds for few days but bracing for worst early next week. Totally shellshocked and just so sad. But here she is, relaxing on my knee in between endless medications and recovering from rush hour motorway trip

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2025 22:10

Oh no @umberpigeonone of my late girls had a fight with another cat, (completely out of character as she was a bit dopey and punctured her eyeball. It healed beautifully and had no issues. She lost the other eye a few years later due to an ulcer, but I think she barely noticed. It didn’t affect her in the slightest. Honestly these cats are really putting us through it this week.

@Puppyluckyi asked the vet how on earth they secure an NG tube and she said they staple it to her head. Would be very handy to stop babies pulling theirs out, but I’m not sure the parents would agree. I was disappointed the nurse wouldn’t give me a surgical staple remover so I can take the staples out. (I love doing that)

She’s back on the bed again.

Keep getting better Penelope!
She’s definitely not happy about the tube, though.
