..... behind Gizmo, of course.

Calling all cats! Come and get some chicken.

I’ve been writing down the letters Kitty picked on her Ouija board just now.

IKFNSJCWVTNO, interspersed with a couple of moons and a star.

I don’t think she’s managed to summon anything yet.

She's spelling in cat of course. If you hear mysterious ghostly miaowing in the middle of the night you'll know she's been successful. 👻🙀

Breadcat24 · 06/09/2025 19:32

Hope you sing "crazy horses" by the Osmonds and "Horse with no name" by whoever that was.
Good for you for putting the time in to help that choir!
I cannot sing and have no hopes that this will improves as I sink into mental decline

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 06/09/2025 19:42

Pianoaholic · 06/09/2025 17:45

What sort of repertoire do you sing in the choir?

Love the NMSP!

The current repertoire was set by the previous conductor.

It's a mix of Scottish folk songs, and an eclectic collection of old pop songs/stuff from musicals.

Today, we sang (among other things) Delilah, Rockin' all Over the World, Always Argyll and Consider Yourself.

Next week, we'll start to set the Christmas repertoire.

I'm trying to decide whether to leave the original words of Fairytale of New York in, or sanitise them.

Picture of innocence. She’d better not summon anything when I’m on holiday, it would be totally unfair on my
neighbour. Imagine popping in to feed next door’s cat & finding two of them, one transparent.

@EmpressaurusKitty Trying so hard to get a message out of your letters and failing

Pianoaholic · 06/09/2025 19:47

We do a very eclectic mix in the choir I accompany. Pop, classical, folk, musicals etc. Quite a few accapella numbers which I enjoy joining in with.
We have started rehearsing for our Christmas concert.
I think we'd have to sanitise Fairytale of new York!

Not enough vowels, that’s the problem.

But there are no vowels (as we know them) in cat.

I'm pleased @Breadcat24 that I'm not the only one who has zero singing ability, this thread has so many musical posters. As a statistician I'm now wondering if there's a correlation between people who really like cats and musical ability, but I suspect it's a coincidence.

I'm slightly horrified that rehearsals are starting for Christmas performances, but I suppose it does take time to practice. I will be ignoring it for as long as possible. I enjoy the day, but I hate the lead up and the middle of winter in general.

True. It’s a shame I can’t get a translation.

I can’t sing either - well, I do, but only in the privacy of my flat.

Allergictoironing · 06/09/2025 20:24

Another one here who has no musical or singing ability. Tried learning both the piano and the violin as a child but was hopeless, and when we had events at school where the entire year had to stand up as a choir I was directed to mouth the words but not let a single sound escape I was so awful.

Well, the dementia choir exists primarily for the joy of practicing and singing together.
They're not especially a choir which performs, although about every eight weeks or so we're invited to local events and asked to sing for half an hour. So yes, we perform, but we don't charge.

It's also to show that people with dementia are capable of more things than they're generally credited with. It's well known that they really enjoy singing. Singing the same songs, week after week, is something that they're very enthusiastic about.

OMG Allergic!
🤣🤣🤣🤣

That reminds me of when I was kicked out of Art in the 4th form, due to having zero talent. Miss Plum was very disparaging when she was showing me the door.

I think it's lovely Broon that the dementia choir exists and of course you will sing Christmas songs. I'm just grumpy that we are heading into my least favourite season of the year already. I worked in pubs for years and grew to hate the really long shifts full of drunken people around the Christmas holidays, it's turned me into a bit of a grinch. I did enjoy working bar/kiosk shifts at my local event hall for the pantomime for many years though, so I'm slightly less of a Christmas hater now.

Boris seems to have many o's in his cat vocabulary as he love shouting MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, while running about the house. I must admit though, that I've no idea how that's spelled in cat. 😂

Allergictoironing · 06/09/2025 20:51

Oh zero talent in art as well. I am so bad at drawing and painting that I'm almost at the stage of being exhibited as an "exciting new talent" at a "progressive" gallery. You know, the kind of gallery where anything that actually resembles what it's supposed to be is rejected and the lauded pieces look nothing like it and would be rejected by the nursery school picture wall.

You’re certain Boris doesn’t identify as a cow?

Kitty sounds as if she’s singing sometimes.

It's more of a long shout while he's running around the house. Some of Boris's miaows are quite musical though. Matilda remains a quiet miaower. She uncharacteristically kept miaowing at me the other day and I realised that she wanted to go outside after I'd opened the door to put some rubbish in the bin, it was really quiet though, unlike her purr.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 06/09/2025 21:14

So does Linney.

Gizmo, on the other hand, has a repertoire of growling, hissing and occasionally barking. He sometimes miaows in annoyance, when he figures out that he's in the car, on the way to the V.E.T.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 06/09/2025 21:16

I'm a useful singer but absolutely rubbish at art.
I'm afraid our cats don't sing, they just miaow, squawk or shout at us, but they do occasionally play the piano in the wee small hours.

HumanToCatBeasties · 06/09/2025 21:37

A piano playing cat sounds quite charming Grumpy, although I'm sure the reality is less than tuneful. I once woke up to a strange rhythmic thumping sound in the middle of the night. It turned out to be Boris who had decided to try and jump up and catch the light pull in the bathroom. He eventually gave up, but managed to succeed at a later date when I was in the bath. He seemed quite startled by his ability to control light and hasn't touched it since.

I make up for my complete lack of any musical ability by being quite good at craft stuff. There's a crochet blanket kit that I really need to start.

EmpressaurusKitty · 06/09/2025 22:25

Boris being startled by his ability to control light is hilarious!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 06/09/2025 22:38

Some of you may remember that Linney once kindly pulled the emergency cord in our bathroom at 3 o'clock in the morning. We live in sheltered housing.

It causes a series of long and short annoying noises, then someone in Edinburgh speaks to you through an intercom, to make sure you're not lying on the floor with multiple injuries.

They were amused to discover that our cat had pulled the cord. Pa Broon and I were less amused, having been dragged out of bed in the middle of the night.

I am absolutely tone deaf, except when no one is around then, of course, I sing like an angel! (The cats disagree). I auditioned for my Junior School's choir and was told I could join but I wasn't allowed to sing above a certain note. Rude!

Tonight, Franken is being ridiculously adorable, even more than usual. I was stroking him earlier and he rolled into his back for tummy tickles, falling off the back of the sofa as he did so. He then came and sat on me, in front of my face, purring his little heart out while I stroked him. Now he's just fast asleep looking like the sweetest kitten ever.
