Have to take my darling boy to be put to sleep in an hour

Just that really. He is 19 and the emergency vet diagnosed a kidney tumor last night. We have an appointment at 4pm and I am already in pieces. Can't imagine coming home without him.

We had this in February, it is so so sad, but if you've not done it before it's very quick and very peaceful, sending lots of love to you and your darling boy.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 04/07/2025 14:52

Thank you. Good to know it’s quick and peaceful.

You have my sympathy, it's truly awful. I cried like a baby when I had my dog pts.

ladymalfoy45 · 04/07/2025 15:00

Just hugs for you. Sorry. Xxxxx

DinoLil · 04/07/2025 15:05

You are doing the kindest thing in the world. Selfless and putting your gorgeous puss first. This is your way of thanking him for being a best friend, by removing his pain.

Sending you hugs.

WonsWoo · 04/07/2025 15:12

I'm really sorry - it's so hard.

Sending Hugs.

Ahh , very sad .
I can still remember taking our old lady cat to the vet for the final time . Even planned you cannot prepare yourself.
It is very peaceful and it is for him. Your last act as a loving owner .

I know it’s the right thing to do - it’s just been hell today waiting for the appointment. He is just lying on my daughters bedroom floor, doesn’t want company but I pop in to see him.

Yes, he’s telling you he’s ready. Courage for this last act of love 💕

Frenchfemme · 04/07/2025 15:24

So sorry that you’re having to go through this. He is a lovely boy. It is the last act of love you can do, to give him a peaceful and dignified passing 🌈. I will be thinking of you.♥️

Oh love I am so so sorry. I know the pain all too well.

What a beautiful boy.

If you need someone to talk to I found the Blue Cross pet bereavement helpline ladies very well trained, incredibly kind and understanding. I rang them lots after my darling boy was killed by a car in October last year.

Cattery · 04/07/2025 16:35

Rest in peace beautiful boy 🐈❤️

CatChant · 04/07/2025 16:40

I’m so very sorry.

Knowing you are doing the best you can for them doesn’t stop your heart breaking.

Be kind to yourself. Sleep tight beautiful puss.

Dominoeffecter · 04/07/2025 16:42

So sorry to hear this, sending hugs at this hard time 💕

Work9to5 · 04/07/2025 16:44

So sorry to hear that. It's up there in the top 5 dreadful things to do in your life.

We had to help our boy over the rainbow bridge (sorry, I know it's a bit twee but it's less clinical) in January. He was 19 too. I still get wobbly thinking about.

💐

SummerFrog25 · 04/07/2025 16:50

@wanttokickoffbutcant

I'm sorry you've had to do this 💕 it is SO heart breaking ❤️‍🩹

you've done the right thing for your incredibly handsome boy 😘

ChocolateCandle · 04/07/2025 16:58

We had to put our 18 year old cat to sleep nearly a year ago. So painful for us, but the right thing for him.
Thinking of you x

FatLarrysBanned · 04/07/2025 17:04

Safe journey to the bridge handsome boy 🐾

Gatekeeper · 04/07/2025 17:07

Love to you and your darling boy...my ginger lad will be 21 this year and time with him is precious

caringcarer · 04/07/2025 17:11

My DS's childhood cat had to be put to sleep 6 years ago. My adult DS and I took him to the vets and we held one paw each whilst injection given. We were both in pieces and couldn't drive home for about 30 minutes as crying so much.

Chocaholic1216 · 04/07/2025 17:12

So sorry for your loss. I had to put my Maine coon cat go sleep a few years ago and I was heartbroken as it had just been the two of us living together for many years and he was such a huge part of my life. It was quick and peaceful but still devastating to have to return home without him. We can’t experience true love in our lives without having to also experience grief. Doesn’t make it any easier though. Look after yourself and sending you a big hug

lostmywayrightnow · 04/07/2025 17:12

I am so sorry. The kindest act indeed.

FionnulaTheCooler · 04/07/2025 17:17

Thinking of you, OP. We had to do the same for our 18 year old cat earlier this year when she stopped eating and lost loads of weight, the vets diagnosed kidney failure and a possible bowel tumour but it would have been cruel to put her through the biopsy surgery at her age and we chose to let her go peacefully. I still miss her every day, she was always waiting at the door when I got in from work to tell me all her news.

JohnTheRevelator · 04/07/2025 17:17

So sorry to hear this OP. Sending you unMumsnetty hugs. I start welling up when I read these posts. I have a nearly 13 year old girl and thankfully she's quite healthy at the moment, but I know she's getting on and I'm dreading THAT day. Hopefully you'll soon be able to remember the happy times with your boy, and maybe give your love to a new one.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 04/07/2025 17:25

So sorry, even thought it is the compassionate and kind thing to do, it doesnt make it easy. Sending you a hug.
