Have to take my darling boy to be put to sleep in an hour

Just that really. He is 19 and the emergency vet diagnosed a kidney tumor last night. We have an appointment at 4pm and I am already in pieces. Can't imagine coming home without him.

Thank you all - it’s done and was very fast and peaceful, literally seconds and he just looked like he went to sleep. We stayed with him a little while and now I’m with my husband in the pub across the road getting up the courage to go home. He is being individually cremated so it could be a couple of weeks before we get the ashes back and we will scatter him in the garden which he loved. He was a very good and handsome boy but his nickname was bastard cat.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words.

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved cat. I've been there and done it - both of our last two had to be pts, (on separate occasions) one with cancer, the other with a whole complex of co-morbidities feeding on each other and making her life miserable. The process was low-tech and humane and gave us the consolation of knowing we'd done the right thing by our sweet girls. They weren't in pain and we weren't suffering with watching them.

Your cat had a great life with you and he knew how much he was loved. RIP beautiful boy. Go well. 🌻

So sorry, OP. We have a ginger boy now and they are such characters. We adopted him after we had to have our lovely 10-year-old girl pts last year, and while I know, hand on heart, we did absolutely the right thing by her, it was also absolutely the worst thing for us.

I agree with pp that the Blue Cross were very useful. They have a FB group too which I initially found a huge comfort, but quickly had to leave because I began to find it too upsetting (by its very nature, it is pretty much all people grieving or in anticipatory grief).

Run well, handsome boy 🧡

Rest in peace dear pusscat. You gave him a lifetime of love. It is so hard. 🐾🖤

It sounds like he was prepping himself and he was ready .
Hats off to you for recognising and acknowledging that his need to go outweighed your wish to keep him with you .

You were so brave to do this last loving thing for him. He was an absolutely beautiful cat. Sending you so much love.

Hugs to you, @wanttokickoffbutcant. Most of us on the Litter Tray threads have been there and relied on the support of the cat lovers here, my little girl left us aged 19 in March this year, too soon for us but the right time for her.
rest in peace lovely boy
