I am working from home and my cat was sleeping on the bed, the sun was shining through the window and she was lay in a patch of sun. I left her there while I put a wash on and ate some food. I came back upstairs and she wasn’t on the bed anymore. I assumed she had to just moved to one of her other spots, but when I eventually got up to look for her I couldn’t find her. I have looked around everywhere 3 times now. Shouting her name, shaking her food, looking inside the wardrobes and under the couches etc. I just have no idea where she is! It has been nearly 3 hours I am so confused

Are the windows open? Could she have slipped outside through one of them?

Overtheatlantic · 14/05/2025 14:46

lol she’s snoozing away in some dark, hidden location, probably wishing you would stop shouting. Have you checked the bottom of the closet or top of the fridge?

pimplebum · 14/05/2025 14:48

Washing machine ? Has she enjoyed an escape into the garden ?

Mudflaps · 14/05/2025 14:48

Years ago I spent ages looking for my cat who would normally spend all day outside but come in for the nights, he just vanished about a hour after coming in and I know he hadn't got out, eventually found him curled up on the top shelf of the hot press (Ireland), he'd made a cosy bed on some towels tucked in beside the hot water cylinder. I ended up putting a bed in there for him.

I have been outside shouting her as well and usually she comes running over because she only goes as far as the neighbours garden. I’m sooo sure that I didn’t open the door for her though. Some windows are open but only a crack, if she’d have gone out of one, she would’ve pushed it open. I’m sure she must have found a hidden place somewhere inside but I have looked everywhere!

In clothes drawer . But (underneath) the bottom drawer.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 14/05/2025 15:20

Mine can get up on top of the wardrobes.

Waitingforsummer75 · 14/05/2025 15:24

Mine hides in the laundry basket or any slightly open drawer, she also won't respond to her name being called or dreamies rattled unless she chooses to

Pearl97 · 14/05/2025 15:25

I hope you’ve found her!

DurhamDurham · 14/05/2025 15:27

When my daughter moved, one of her cats hid behind and underneath the toilet bowl, he was curled up so tightly it took us ages to find him. Tempting him out didn’t work. She didn’t really see him for a few days. He loves the new house now, luckily!

purplecorkheart · 14/05/2025 15:28

Look in suitcases. Our old cat used to push their way into unzipped cases that were laying flat on top of the wardrobe.

GloriousGoosebumps · 14/05/2025 15:28

Have you been in the under stairs cupboard? We found our missing cat there once and idiot husband had actually looked inside and missed him! Fortunately, he started meowing when he finally decided he wanted to get out. The garage is also worth investigating, ours like to pop in for a look around whenever the internal door is open.

PrettyPuss · 14/05/2025 15:29

This happened to me once, she was in a drawer. Someone had closed it without noticing that she was asleep in it. Searched everywhere but eventually (when she woke up, I think) she answered me with meow's.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/05/2025 15:30

Don't suppose you have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers, do you? There's a perfectly cat sized space at the back behind the drawer that's accessible both through an open drawer and from behind.

PrettyPuss · 14/05/2025 15:32

They are so good at tucking themselves away. I have just remembered another similar occasion with the same cat. She was in a suitcase.

My cats have a tendency to lie in the sun for a while and then slope of in search of shade and a cool spot.

BurglarAndSwag · 14/05/2025 15:34

Cat Burglar?

We 'lost' a cat, and he had climbed up the chimney (of an open fireplace). We just had to wait until he decided to come down.

thequeenoftarts · 14/05/2025 15:34

Cats here too and they are assholes, they come when it suits em to. I physically have to go shake the oldest one, think he is deaf or deafer than he was lol.

Under the bed, or sofa, on the window behind the heavy curtains, in the press or wardrobe, the deaf one can open presses here, check the utility room, the bathroom, in the bed is also a good hiding place here! Mine are indoor only so I know they wont have gotten out, but try not worry, puss aint far away, prob just ignoring you.

MiddleAgedDread · 14/05/2025 15:36

I locked BF's cat in the kitchen one morning because he was asleep on a chair pushed under the table and I never thought to look for him there. I assumed he was under one of the beds (which is also a usual hiding place). Luckily he was only there for a short time before BF came home!

WeaselsRising · 14/05/2025 15:37

Try inside the settee.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/05/2025 15:38

Inside the upholstery of the sofa? My daughter's cat found a small tear, made it bigger and got inside.

In the airing cupboard or a wardrobe? Both these have happened to me. The cat was in the wardrobe for nearly 24 hours but didn't do anything unpleasant.

In the car boot? My parents' cat dud this for nearly 2 days and it was unpleasant.

Also had a kitten hide under a chest of drawers.

BigDahliaFan · 14/05/2025 15:41

Ours as a kitten got under the mattress and slept there. He also got inside the sofa and went to sleep.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 14/05/2025 15:45

Ive lost my cat so many times inside the house. Sometimes it takes hours to find her.
She’s managed to get into wardrobes, inside the washing bin (lid dropped closed on top), under furniture, hidden behind cushions etc.
But usually she’s somewhere I’ve already looked, like on the dining room chairs under the table, but as I’m slightly panicked I’ve not looked thoroughly.

my dad’s cat is usually on top of the kitchen cabinets when she’s gone ‘missing’.

Nootellaontoast · 14/05/2025 15:45

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions, I have opened every single cupboard and drawer and looked on top and underneath everything. I can’t find her 😢 I’m panicking I don’t understand

Could you try opening a tin of tuna or food (that smells strongly) and leaving it out?
