As we approach the festive season, they're already finessing their plans and recalling last year's successes............

Vixen is looking particularly drunk tonight. I promise I have not let her have any Baileys.

What on earth has Vixen been drinking then? That picture is hilarious.

Thanks, everyone. I’ve had lovely newborn snuggles this afternoon. Just about to leave to go home to my fur babies, who must think they’ve been abandoned.
Keep the lovely cat pics coming.

RumNotRun · 05/12/2024 20:27

Unless she has learned to open bottles @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats then I don't think she's drunk anything. She's just naturally photogenic 🤣

I'm mostly worried that if the cats refuse to eat it I might have to. To be fair I've never actually tasted spam so it might be delicious, but for some reason meat out of a tin puts me right off. I eat tinned tuna so there's no logic to my tinned meat aversion.

I don't eat the tinned Spam.

Our butcher makes his own.

We love a Spam Tea at our house.
🤣

I have fond recollections of having Spam fritters for school dinners.
I realise I may be looking back with rose tinted spectacles 🤣

I’m not sure what I’m going to do about Kitty’s Christmas dinner. I feel she ought to have one.

She likes the Iams kibble she’s on, & various treats. I’ve tried her with a few posh wet foods & she just licks a bit & leaves it. Chicken & rice in broth today - she lapped up the broth & that was it.

I’m a veggie so she won’t be getting a bit of the turkey. I think I’m going to see if I can get a bit of ready-cooked organic chicken or something with lick-e-lix as a sauce.

Or maybe I should just get her spam…

My grandparents were polish so we have a sort of Polish Christmas eve dinner which involves fish. My mum sent me home last year with a probably expensive cooked piece of fish for Matilda and Boris, which I gave them a piece of to try and they turned they refused to eat. I put the rest of it in a sandwich and ate it myself. What I'm trying to say is that cats are fickle creatures and who knows what they consider a special meal

If you don't mind cooking chicken I'm sure Kitty would love a warm piece of roasted chicken breast, but if you don't feel comfortable doing that I'm sure she would like some tinned tuna. Otherwise I'm sure she would love some extra dreamies.

Or possibly spam.

TheShellBeach · 05/12/2024 21:10

I wonder if they'll ever make Spam Dreamies.

Tinned tuna. I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks @HumanToCatBeasties.

@RumNotRun I look completely sozzled in any picture too so I am very much with Vixen here
@TheShellBeach spam not so much

HumanToCatBeasties · 05/12/2024 21:36

I know so little about spam I'm not sure 100% if you are being serious @TheShellBeach . What is spam? (of the meaty kind). Do butchers make it? We will remain a spam free household regardless. 😂

Pudmyboy · 05/12/2024 21:40

Allergictoironing · 05/12/2024 19:39

I know people with HIV are put on antiretroviral medication, is there anything like that for cats?

I know there's been a bit of cutting edge research into this lately, but it is in it's infancy and so far there are some considerable side effects seen like anaemia (which is already one of Tobias's symptoms). There's also the issue of him not being the most compliant cat in the world when it comes to meds (getting Gabapentin in him to get him to the vets is "interesting" and involves deceit), and if he needed to go too often to see the vet for e.g. injections that would distress him greatly. There's also the money issue - these are VERY VERY expensive, the insurance would run out probably before we even got to that stage, and as a admin in a county council there's no way could I afford it myself.

Thanks, I have in my head an idea that there may be a long-lasting ARV injection in development, but I can see that the profit margin in trying to develop something like that for cats won't be enough to interest pharmaceutical companies, sadly

I don't look back with rose tinted spectacles on any of my school dinners. I don't recall us every having spam though, so maybe it really is delicious. 😂

I suspect that deep frying Spam in batter would probably not be considered a healthy school dinner option by Jamie Oliver - but they were delicious with chips 🤣.

I promise I'm being serious.

We've always been fond of Spam.

As you know, we live in a remote Scottish village. A butcher from Paisley (93 miles away) delivers here once a fortnight.

His produce is superb. We get our Christmas turkey from him.

And as well as being a very good butcher, he makes wonderful apple pies.

And Spam.

🤣🤣🤣

Ooh, and this year, he's expanded into Sticky Toffee Pudding.

He has a very loyal customer in DS2 now. DS2 is extremely fond of the butcher's BBQ Burgers.

The butcher was delighted when he discovered that DD2 was moving here.

Is spam the same as the mysteriously named "luncheon meat" we used to get at primary school?

I'm not sure if I school dinners in my region at the time were particularly bad, but I don't have the fond memories other people seem to have. I did spend years working in catering and hospitality and there aren't many foodstuffs that I haven't deep fat fried. I've fried a battered physalis in batter at one pub (not my idea), but never spam. Maybe it's time for a come back in pubs? 😂

Yes it is!

I must confess that there are a couple of tins of Spam in the store cupboard.

We have to be prepared for bad weather here. We've been cut off before now. There's only one road in and out of the village, and if it's blocked for any reason, food can't be delivered.

The 2023 landslides caused chaos here, as the road was washed away.

If you wanted to buy Kitty some cooked chicken she would probably love it heated briefly in the microwave as well.

RumNotRun · 05/12/2024 22:18

My school dinners were generally great. There were usually two different hit options and if you didn't fancy them you could have the salad cart. You got 10 points to use and each item had a corresponding number of points. I think two crab sticks were 1 point, cold sausages were 1 point. Woe betide anyone trying to have more than 10 points of salad though!

Esgaroth · 06/12/2024 11:03

Sorry to hear about Tobias' diagnosis. Hopefully he manages to live with it without too much bother - he certainly sounds like he's in the best possible hands!

Kettle just dipped his tail in my cup of tea. He didn't even notice, the dozy cat. I had to remove it myself and hold it to his face to get him to clean it 🙄
