Vet this morning-fear the worst

MrsMitford3 · 31/10/2024 08:16

Writing this in floods. I am calling the vet as soon as they open this morning but I think my girl is on her last legs.

She has been off of her food a bit but then happily stole some roast chicken off of my plate and so we have been tempting her with forbidden foods.
This week she is eating very little and her little bones sticking out.
(she always has been a very big cat)

She is still curling up with me and purring but this morning she came in from outside and went to get in her bed and her legs sort of buckled and she staggered in.

She is not that old-13 but has had acute kidney failure twice and miraculously survived.

Feeling terribly sad

Just to let you know I’m here and thinking of you.
It’s so hard when they can’t tell you what’s wrong and how they actually feel, but sending you positive vibes and virtual hugs. Is it possible it might by hyperthyroidism? It’s pretty common in older cats.
Please let us know how your lovely girl gets on. X

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 31/10/2024 08:23

I’m so sorry, @MrsMitford3. I hope the vet can help.

Tcateh · 31/10/2024 08:25

Hiya, i just wanted to give you a cat mum hug.
I'm sorry you're facing this so suddenly.
It's the hardest decision to make and the responsibility is very sad.

Have you anyone to go with you or are you like me and just want to be alone.
I'm very sure your cat will be comforted by your presence and love.

Xx

MrsMitford3 · 31/10/2024 08:28

Thanks for the support-sitting her crying and waiting for the vet to open.

I just can't see a happy ending here

@JohnPrescottsPyjamas how does that manifest itself??

I've had older cats over the years develop hyperthyroidism. The most noticeable symptom was steady weight loss and increased thirst and appetite, although I see you’ve said your lovely girl is eating less. I don’t want to cruelly raise your hopes as I’m not vet trained, just speaking as a cat owner, but a blood test can rule it in or out. Xx

Igmum · 31/10/2024 08:52

Sending love and prayers to you ❤️ I hope she's ok

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2024 08:55

Sending a paw hold.

GoFaster83 · 31/10/2024 09:04

I'm so sorry for you and hoping for the best for your wee cat. Let us know how she gets on. Fingers crossed for you both.

MrsMitford3 · 31/10/2024 09:15

The vet was brilliant-took her straight in

She was sort of falling over on the examination table-they are going to hydrate her and do some blood work. If it is one rare thing (I can't remember the name) they can treat but worth making sure.

🙏

Fingers and paws crossed for you and your lovely girl

MrsMitford3 · 31/10/2024 12:39

She has been given pain meds and fluid and we have brought her home.

The vet said she barely has one functioning kidney and will never get better only worse and it is time to let her go.

He will come to our house this afternoon. 😢

I’m so, so sorry. Thinking of you and your darling girl. Please take a tiny bit of comfort that she knows she’s surrounded by love and had the perfect life with you. Xxx

CatChant · 31/10/2024 12:51

I am so sorry about your lovely girl. It’s so hard to say goodbye.

You are doing the right thing. It doesn’t make it any easier for you now, but it is preventing her from suffering and that knowledge will be a comfort to you in the coming days. It is the last gift you can give her.

Be gentle with yourself.

ChaChaSlide101 · 31/10/2024 12:58

Thinking of you xxx

MrsMitford3 · 31/10/2024 15:53

Finding this thread such a comfort as I wait for the vet-he is making a home visit.

IRL I feel like I need to be strong-all DC in 20-'s and none are here which DD is struggling with and it has hit them all pretty hard.

I have just been stroking her and she was purring gently so I feel comfort from that.

But it is clearly time

Oh my love. At least she is at home. She is in a safe place and loved. Isn’t that the most any of us could ask for at the end.

whirlyhead · 31/10/2024 16:01

Oh bless. I've lost one to kidney failure at the same age, and it's so sad, so I feel for you. Just hold her paw and talk to her as she goes and try to hold it together until she's gone (hard I know), That's the best thing you can do for her. Thinking of you x

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 31/10/2024 16:35

A vet told me that one of the most important things you can do for your pet is be there at the end.

She’ll fall asleep in her own home, knowing you love her.

JenaWren · 31/10/2024 16:46

I’m so sorry MrsMitford. It’s the hardest thing to say goodbye. How lovely to be at home and surrounded by your adoring cat slaves everyone you love. That’s what I’d want for myself.

Sending you a paw hold from me and the ginger one.

Esgaroth · 31/10/2024 17:24

I'm sorry, it must be so hard.

You gave her a wonderful life and she'll have the best possible death, at home surrounded by her familiar environment and her people.

Sending you all the best wishes.

Danascully2 · 31/10/2024 17:29

So sorry to hear that, we lost our beloved old boy earlier this year. It's so horrible but you are doing the right thing for her, however much it hurts.

Tcateh · 31/10/2024 18:06

Oh op I'm so sorry.
Bless you and your family.
Here to listen..I've been through this many times and the love for our animals never goes away.

Xxxx

RIP Kitty 💔

It was absolutely time, I know that with complete certainty but isn't any easier to say goodbye.

Do you have a favourite picture of her? Only if you want to, of course.

I bet she was a fantastic cat. 💐

Oh @MrsMitford3 I empathise entirely. I had to make the same decision last week about my beloved 12 year old Bengal. He went down so quickly too - the vet suspected a brain tumour/lesion as he was falling over, completely uncoordinated and head pressing. Tests revealed nothing and he didn’t respond to any of the medication that was tried. The vet said to me, let him go while he’s still a handsome boy and not deteriorating any further.

Me, my DH and 2 adult DCs were actually inconsolable the first evening and the grief was all consuming but we can talk about him now without that welling up feeling. Be gentle with yourselves for however long it takes and remember, your beautiful girl knew she was so loved. Xxx
