Had to rush my cat to the emergency vets this morning

She was gasping for breath and her pupils were hugely dilated. They did blood tests and an x-ray and it doesn't look good. Her blood tests were deranged all over the place and it looks like she has masses in her lungs and near her heart. They can't wean her off the oxygen. They said to confirm the masses she would need a CT and/or biopsy but that wouldn't be until Wednesday at the earliest and they're not honestly sure she'll make it If they can't get her off the oxygen she can't have it anyway. She's not shown any signs of being unwell and just last night was cuddled up on my lap purring. I just want her back.

They've given her steroids this evening to see if that helps but it looks like I have a very difficult decision to make very soon.

I'm absolutely devastated and trying to hold it together for the kids. My youngest is devastated too. We're not sure how old she is but I've had her nearly 6 years and she was probably about 3 or 4 when I got her.

Because I had to take her to the emergency clinic I had to pay out £500 - she is insured but obviously I couldn't get hold of the insurers today.

Here's my beautiful girl Bonnie having a cuddle with me:

Bless her, what a beautiful girl. So sorry to hear this but I'm sending positive thoughts your way and hers. 💐

ChocolateCandle · 25/12/2023 21:10

I'm so sorry. She's gorgeous.
We had to have our beautiful black cat PTS 3 years ago. We still miss him but we still have his "brother." He looks like your Bonnie. A difficult decision but focus on what a wonderful life you've given her x

twiddlingthumbs69 · 25/12/2023 21:19

Ahhh beautiful Bonnie. We are all thinking of you and sending love and hugs baby. 💐

margotrose · 25/12/2023 23:19

Oh god I am so sorry.

We had similar with our girl back in May but she passed before we even got her to the vets.

Sending you big hug x

I'm at the vets now to say goodbye. They called me to say they've done more tests - they're still not sure what the medical issue is but think there's more than one thing going on and the prognosis isn't good for her. I don't want to put her through lots more investigations when the outcome isn't going to be great anyway. So I just want to let her go peacefully and be with her at the end. But my heart is breaking.

I'm so sorry @MyGhastIsFlabbered , a gentle hug to you from me.

I read something that really resonated with me when I was in the same situation. It said "You're taking away their pain and making it yours." So true.

Much love to you and your family.

I'm very sorry about your lovely Bonnie.

You did the right thing. Our cat had a similar episode which ended in her being pts the day after it started.

It's heartbreaking.

I'm so sorry... I've been there this month with my beautiful young cat and it's really hard... sending love ❤️

KinS24 · 26/12/2023 08:34

I am so sorry. It sounds as though you gave her a wonderful happy life right up to the end.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 26/12/2023 08:39

Yes I went down to the vets in the middle of the night and we had a cuddle and she was rubbing herself against me and purring like she always did so I'm so glad I was there even though it broke my heart completely. She was such a character. Even the vet was saying what a lovely girl she was. She said 'she doesn't have a nasty bone in her body' and she really didn't.

I'm so sorry OP, it's terribly hard, especially when it comes out of the blue like that in a young cat. My condolences.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/12/2023 09:53

Oh , very Sad It must've been scary for both of you (you and your beautiful cat) but you acted with speed to get her help and made the difficult but right decison for her .

So very sorry.

GlomOfNit · 26/12/2023 10:45

Oh, I'm so sorry. We had a similar heartbreak last month and it's still so sore to think about it. You did the right thing 100% - sometimes you have to treat what's right in front of you rather than try tests and operations with the faint hope that they might prolong life. You'll find that the knowledge that you did the right thing will be a massive comfort to you - we have.
