What time does your cat wake you up in the morning?

My cat starts hassling me at sunrise for food, everyday. He will scratch at my door and meow until he is fed.

I have had him for a year (he was a kitten when I got him) and he's always been this way. I tried shutting him in the living room overnight but he was whining all night.

I don't think it's just food either - sometimes I will get up and feed him early, and he will eat his food and then return doing the same thing.

I have had my four year old cat since she was six weeks old and she always wakes me between 4am and 5am. She’s not hungry, she doesn’t need outside, she doesn’t even want to play. She is just as asshole😂.

she gets a bit of attention then goes back to sleep.

it’s my own fault because I let her sleep on my bed. It’s the price I pay!

Bloody 4.30am. In my face.

Theunamedcat · 28/05/2023 23:22

Sunrise 4-4.30am at the moment. There is dry food down. But one of them paws my face until I acknowledge them. Tried to lock them out of my bedroom but they then yell at my door and wake everybody up. They are orientals and very dog like. Have a day of gardening planned and I will have my cats helping most of the day as they follow me around. Sort of makes up for the early waking.

I have orientals too, they're a pain. If I shut them out at night they've taken to tearing the carpet until I open the door. I have to tie it shut anyway because one of them jumps up to open the door by the handle. If I don't shut them out they're awake at dawn (currently seems to be 4 am) and pawing at my face - with claws - until I get up. It's not just for food, they want my attention. They're only a year old though. I'm hoping one day in the distant future they'll settle down! I love them really!

I am like a zombie because of my babies! My moggie starts going in and out at half 7pm. Because I don’t have a car flap as I have a house cat that I don’t want to escape I have to get the door for him! He usually settles down at 4ish and then my house cat wakes up and starts fussing around me at about 4.30! So I’m not going to bed until 5am. I’ve tried ignoring them but they are so loud and they scratch everything for attention. The carpet by my doors is ruined/shredded! Good job I love them ❤️

Allergictoironing · 29/05/2023 08:44

@Ladybird69 there's a possible fix for your dilemma there. Have a look at microchip operated cat flaps - they only open for cats with the right chip. You can also set timers so e.g. they only allow the cat to come in after a certain time & not go back out again.

Mine never wakes me up in the morning. She is fed at 3.30pm everyday and has biscuits to graze on all day. She’s 7

SkankingWombat · 29/05/2023 09:28

Ours is fed at 8am, so makes her presence known from 7am just in case we have the urge to feed her early (this never happens! She's forever the optimist though...). This can take the form of carpet scratching, thundering up and down the stairs, giving us stony death-stares, or coming for snuggles. If we dare to have a lie-in and we are not up putting meaty chunks into her bowl at 8am, she will either move closer and increase the volume on the purring if she's feeling kind, or start to bite us if she's hangry.

catbirddogchild · 29/05/2023 09:30

Sits on my face at sunrise heavily purring and nuzzling. Very forcefully head banging me. Horrid creature

Ladybird69 · 30/05/2023 01:28

Thanks @Allergictoironing i have heard about them but I’m a little wary because previous cat flap would sometimes not shut properly and house cat would be able to get out too but not back in as she hasn’t got the right chip! My latest thought is dividing the house at night and leaving moggie. with access to outdoor and hope that they don’t scratch and cry to get through. I will look into it.

almostoverthehill · 30/05/2023 01:32

Anytime she feels like it lol. Usually shouting in my face, if that doesn’t work she will literally walk across my head.

verdantverdure · 30/05/2023 01:38

Ours don't wake us up for food.

They have dry food out at all times and a late supper as well as breakfast and tea.

One of them will tickle my face with her whiskers when she wants me to lift the duvet so she can come in and be Little Spoon though. It's adorable

Silkierabbit · 30/05/2023 01:42

1.40am and trilling constantly Maine Coon very cute but hard to sleep but matches my menopause clock. It's just for attention and games.

LadyJ2023 · 30/05/2023 02:27

My cats don't they have there bowlful of dry food and water 24.7 and get there meat and treats when I remember in the day lol. Sounds like yours needs a lot more grub than he is getting

Remaker · 30/05/2023 03:44

6 if I’m lucky. 5 if I’m not. And not for food as they have access to that all day. Just for fun!

My girl cat is pretty good, my boy cat is naughty! Reaches up and ‘pats’ my face then hides under the bed. Head butts me in the back (even does a little run up for more power).

As a special treat he opens all the plantation shutters in our room to let us know the sun is up.

This morning he brought my iPad crashing onto the floor.

Icequeen01 · 30/05/2023 04:09

Mine have just woken me up. As soon as the birds start singing they start meowing. Same pattern, I get up, put some food down, they look at it and walk out of the catflap Angry

DogsvsCats · 30/05/2023 04:19

They don't- they come and keep watch til we start moving but somehow got the kind that are happy to wait til a decent hour before demanding anything from us!

Choconutty · 30/05/2023 06:27

Boy cat meiows and comes up on the bed the moment he hears some movement (I'm an early riser) - if I want a lie-in, I have to stay still and pretend to be asleep so he curls up near me and naps until I'm ready to give him food (they have dry food out all the time - he's not starving)

He would get on me an knead to hint he'd like me to get up, but never actually make me (ie. no claws or biting - although when he comes in close to sniff my face to see if I'm pretending it can be very hard to stay still!)

There's plenty of well fed cats on this thread alone with 24/7 access to dry food and water, who still wake their slaves up at ungodly times. Though my cats are self-regulating with food, as yours seem to be, there are plenty who will cry for food all day & eat themselves ill.

Some cats just like to check on their slaves, or want attention like a very small child does.

DrHousecuredme · 30/05/2023 07:37

Mine are shut downstairs overnight with biscuits and water. They have done this since the day they arrived, appear happy with the arrangement and don't wake me up.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 30/05/2023 07:40

Equally lots of cat owners indulge the behaviour and don't seem to think cats can learn routine or good behaviour.

I've had numerous cats over the years, in lots of different situations/set-ups and I've never ever been woken up at 3/4/5am by my cats unless one of them has been unwell, which has happened probably less than five times in a decade.

If you let a crepuscular animal like a cat into your bedroom at night then you can't be surprised when they wake you up at 5am!

MayBeee · 30/05/2023 07:47

Our cat is an over groomer and inspite of being brushed regularly and given hairball paste & treats will throw up a hairball fairly regularly, trouble is her preferred spot is in our bedroom ( she will leave the room she's in to come into the bedroom ) to vom .
This morning - 5.30 !

Ladybird69 · 31/05/2023 19:00

Hi again @Allergictoironing ive taken another look at cat flaps and they’ve come on a lot eh. I’ve ordered one which promises to keep house cat in and safe! Thanks

doubleoseven · 31/05/2023 19:07

5am coming into my bed after breakfast. She doesn't wake me for food as she always has dry food. Just wants attention. I then can't get back to sleep and she settles down on my bed for a 6 hour nap!

Want2beme · 31/05/2023 21:23

I don't get woken up, she's very considerate. The other 2 are in the kitchen and come and go through the catflap, and they don't wake me up either.
