What time does your cat wake you up in the morning?

My cat starts hassling me at sunrise for food, everyday. He will scratch at my door and meow until he is fed.

I have had him for a year (he was a kitten when I got him) and he's always been this way. I tried shutting him in the living room overnight but he was whining all night.

I don't think it's just food either - sometimes I will get up and feed him early, and he will eat his food and then return doing the same thing.

My twat cat work me up at 5am by kindly depositing a dead mouse on my head. Twat-cat now barred from the bedroom at night.

Allergictoironing · 28/05/2023 08:46

Girlcat doesn't wake me as such, she just comes in and STARES at me once I'm up & moving if she thinks I'm late. Tobias doesn't come into my room when I'm in there yet, except a couple of times when midnight zoomies have led to them chasing each other in there.

But Boycat would come in some time around 6 - 6:30 if my alarm hadn't gone off just for the cuddles. I'd be woken by him silently jumping onto the bottom of the bed then slowly working his way up to face level. I'd just ensure I was lying on the correct side with enough room for him between me & the edge of the bed, & go back to sleep snuggling. I so miss that.

FloofCloud · 28/05/2023 08:48

I have 3, the piggy one gets his get up dance at around sunrise - he's often ejected from the window (ground floor!). The other boy waits til I get up and he comes out from under the bed stretching and ready for dinner and the female likes to eat later in the day

reachforthestars5 · 28/05/2023 09:13

If I left dry food down for him all the time he would be as big as a house! He gobbles everything immediately, he never leaves a crumb. He's always been that way.

My cat has been making mischief like this for years. He’s settling down a bit at nearly eight. We use a timer bowl to feed him a meal during the night and early morning. Sometimes he makes a lot of noise trying to smash that open.

Cats are so stubborn, it’s very hard to change their behaviour.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/05/2023 10:57

They don't.

They're shut downstairs at night with food, water, toys, scratch posts, litter trays and beds, and it's been that way since they both came home.

They're now three and eight and have never once woken us up at stupid o'clock in the morning.

LeefPeeper · 28/05/2023 11:03

Mine don’t, they both have full roam of the house including our bedroom, but just come up and sleep on the end of the bed. The little one will come and say hello when she hears/feels you start to stir awake. They don’t have 24 hour access to food, as one is on a special diet and has medicine added to hers, so I can’t leave it down all day and night. I think I am very fortunate, my old cat used to meow at me at some god forsaken hours!

CountTo10 · 28/05/2023 11:05

As soon as it's light but I have no idea why. I get up and I follow him around the house but it's never clear what he wants. There's always dried food in his bowl and even if I get some wet food out he stares at it and wanders off. He's never been that bothered by food. Sometimes it's because he wants me to let him out of the front door despite having a perfectly good cat flap at the back. A lot of the time there's no reason whatsoever.

It's an annoying mystery.

Cats are crepuscular and most active at dawn and dusk, that's why they wake up at silly o'clock ☺️

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/05/2023 11:09

They don't do it for food, they just remember at random points of the night that they're cold/bored/love us very very much.

Crabacus · 28/05/2023 11:10

Mine are shut in downstairs at night so can't come to wake us up. Most mornings they don't even stir when I first get downstairs at about 7am. Mostly the first thing they demand is for me to open the front door so they can go out - even though as soon as I've opened the door to downstairs they can go out the cat flap.

RedHinge · 28/05/2023 11:16

Never, he is shut in the kitchen at night with access to a cat flap.

BlueKaftan · 28/05/2023 11:17

She races up the stairs and launches herself onto me at around 4am every morning. I feed her and go back to bed. She eats and then launches herself again, this time for cuddles.

aSofaNearYou · 28/05/2023 11:33

I shut my cat in the kitchen at night or she just harasses me all night. She goes out of the cat flap too.

CountTo10 · 28/05/2023 20:28

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts Yes I'm aware of that but it still doesn't mean he needs to start whacking me in the face with his paw or headi butting me!

It's not a case of one up all up for no good reason 😂😂

Which is why mine are shut downstairs at night Grin

It always baffles me that so many cat owners seem to just accept being woken up at 3am everyday, lol.

If I shut mine anywhere I would have no door left or at least no paint on the door by the time I woke up. Not to mention the howling.

CountTo10 · 28/05/2023 20:33

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts He comes in through my bedroom window!!! 🥺

Oh no 😂 one of mine is too fat and lazy to climb that high, and the other one is too dim to figure out how 🙈

Caspianberg · 28/05/2023 06:44

They dont. They have unlimited biscuits throughout the day, and only get wet food in the evening. So they just help themselves to dried food whenever they want (it’s in an auto feeder).

Same, my cat just graze so i have food and water out at all times. She may jump on the bed around 5am but then sleep with us

YoSof · 28/05/2023 21:38

Mine licks my nose at around 5am every day for no reason except to wake me up.

When she is satisfied that I’m fully awake, she curls up and goes back to sleep.

Awwwwww so cute

justanothermummma · 28/05/2023 21:49

Mine lives downstairs and mainly is in the utility. She comes in at night and is let out when we come downstairs. She has no access to upstairs (she'd wake us otherwise).

Good luck OP! X

Theoldwoman · 28/05/2023 22:07

I’ve had a few cats over the years and they would all wake super early - 4am was not uncommon.

The cat we have now however, just sits quietly on the end of the bed until I wake up and move, that maybe 4am or 10 am! He’s awesome!

Tilllly · 28/05/2023 22:48

2 of mine sleep happily until they hear breakfast

The middle one... 5am if we're lucky
