Two of my cats just attacked a dog

I think I’m still a bit in shock.

Heard all this yelping outside - looked out the window and saw a Westie dog and my cats and immediately assumed the dog was attacking my cats. Ran outside to get them and realised my cats were attacking the dog!

Ive never seen anything like it. My cats were in some kind of frenzied coordinated attack and the poor dog was yelping and crying. Every time I got one cat off, the other cat would launch herself at it.

I have no idea what triggered it - dogs walk by all the time. They’re quite protective cats in that they’ll see off foxes if they think they’re too close to my kids but have never attacked a dog.

Was the dog alone and not with its owner? Maybe it went for the cats first so the retaliated?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2023 18:24

Ah he probably started it.

neitherofthem · 17/03/2023 18:27

My neighbour's poodle once escaped and found its way into my back garden through a small gap in the fence. I heard the commotion and I have never seen one of my cats erupt into such a spitting ball of vicious fury before. That dog couldn't find its way out again fast enough.

Emmelina · 17/03/2023 18:29

I would assume the dog started it! Yorkies can be aggressive yappy little sods!

Leafless · 17/03/2023 18:33

Sounds like he deserved it.

kitsuneghost · 17/03/2023 18:34

Maybe they were threatened or felt threatened.

OP, cats can be territorial.

I once had a cat who loathed dogs . He chased a Bassett hound , gave it a slipped disc, also chased Alsatians and Afghan hounds!

GoddessofSuburbia · 17/03/2023 18:42

Cats can be funny things; it doesn’t necessarily mean the dog started it. One of ours is patient and tolerant of dogs, the other will actually come and find one purely to start a fight if she’s in the mood!

furryfrontbottom · 17/03/2023 18:45

I think they deserve extra Dreamies tonight.

Darkoutsideclosethecurtains · 17/03/2023 18:51

I once took in a stray cat who it turned out hated dogs and would see them off his territory. The dogs generally seemed surprised to be made unwelcome.

What have yorkies got to do with it?

mine loves cats and is devastated when they won’t play properly. Next doors cat loves to roll around on the other side of the fence and wind him up.

tbf as well I’ve never had a yorkie take on a cat, they’re not that stupid and know when they’re outranked 😂

Coffeeandcatsforlife · 17/03/2023 18:52

My cat is a sod for this! She’s ok around some dogs, but others seem to trigger her. There’s a husky that lives near us and she hates the poor dog, tries to attack her. Presumed it was as dog was walking past our property and she was protecting us and her home, but I was out once, local watching my children play and cat comes with us and husky and his new brother husky come walking along with owner. My cat launches into the air, and ninja style just starts atttacking these poor huskies. The huskies could easily have killed her but were just trying to get away. I was so apologetic! It’s not just those dogs either, she charged at a bull mastiff type dog and i panicked thinking omg it will kill her, but he was just as scared. She’s my little princess, but an absolute thug in the streets!

I love that your dog just wants to play.

My oldest cat (and I) moved in with my parents and their dog for around a year and I loved watching the dog and cat play with each other... they'd take turns chasing each other round the garden and playing hide and seek (rather like two cats do... except there was a dog involved)!

Random789 · 17/03/2023 19:01

My old dog was attacked by cats a few times. Once was in the woods where I spotted a far-straying cat and put my dog on lead to protect her. Obviously she couldn't understand that the lead was keeping her safe and she launched herself at my dog, putting herself in harms way and creating huge hassle for me.

I feel infinitely forgiving of cats that attack my dogs. They are defending themselves; they can't be expected to work out when self defence is necessary and when it is not.
I feel that cat attacks were a good lesson for my old dog to have learnt. Subsequently, on the few occasions when he chased cats, he was always a bit shocked and cowardly when he actually managed to catch up with them. He usually remembered an important appointment elsewhere and skidaddled.

CMOTDibbler · 17/03/2023 19:03

My late enormous ginger boy used to sit on the drive and do the cat equivalent of 'cmon if you think you're hard enough' to all the passing dogs. I once looked out to see what was going on and found him hanging off a rottweilers face. The rottie loved him and would come to see him every day but apparently pushed it a bit far that day

Random789 · 17/03/2023 19:04

lolol CMOTDibbler!😂

You know, I read Westie and by the time I got to the bottom to comment my brain Fridayed on me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2023 18:24

Ah he probably started it.

Yeah, that'll be it.
I've seen what cats have to put up with, for example;
a Westie sticking it's tongue out,
a French Bulldog turning it's nose up,
a Pointer proding and poking,
a Spaniel cocking a snook,
a Boxer throwing a punch,
and that's just for starters...

PotterofGryfindor · 17/03/2023 19:23

Was this dog being walked or just having a wander about alone? Either way I wouldn’t worry too much but cats are allowed to be out and about alone whereas dogs are not.

For attacking a dog? Ffs

Random789 · 17/03/2023 19:27

Lol at 'my brain Fridayed on me' Emmalina.

I wish my brain only Fridayed on me on actual Fridays,

Greydog · 17/03/2023 19:40

My poor old greyhound was attacked by a bloody cat. Dog was on the lead, didn't even see the cat, it was on a wall, and came after dog like an excocet. Poor dog freezes when she's scared, and didn't try to run away or even defend herself. Trying to pick up a greyhound is not easy. She is still too scared to walk up that road

AnneElliott · 17/03/2023 19:40

Some cats are territorial and will attack if threatened. One of mine sits under my car on the drive and any dog that pokes his nose underneath gets a smack. Most of the dogs look very surprised.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 17/03/2023 19:47

The dog was being walked along by its owner. I felt so sorrry for the owner - she got scratched on her leg trying to stop my cats. I apologised several times and asked what happened - she seemed a really nice lady and seemed very confused by what had happened. Said her dog didn’t attack them.

One of my cats is very territorial but the other is laid back as to the point of being vacant sometimes - I have NEVER seen her like that. I’ve seen the dog be walked by frequently and the cats have never paid it any mind.

They were like these frenzied knife-wielding cartwheeling balls of fluff. I felt so bad for the poor dog, it was yelping and was jumping around on its lead trying to get away.

I got one of my cats in but the other saw the woman off all the way down the road as she carried her dog away.
