Two of my cats just attacked a dog

I think I’m still a bit in shock.

Heard all this yelping outside - looked out the window and saw a Westie dog and my cats and immediately assumed the dog was attacking my cats. Ran outside to get them and realised my cats were attacking the dog!

Ive never seen anything like it. My cats were in some kind of frenzied coordinated attack and the poor dog was yelping and crying. Every time I got one cat off, the other cat would launch herself at it.

I have no idea what triggered it - dogs walk by all the time. They’re quite protective cats in that they’ll see off foxes if they think they’re too close to my kids but have never attacked a dog.

Poor dog!

I wouldn't assume it was the dogs fault - we have a dog and three cats and the cats can definitely start things - probably more than the dog does sometimes Grin

Hopefully the owner gets him checked over by a vet as cat bites and scratches can turn really nasty.

I'd have booted both cats over your fence I'm afraid.
Imagine the uproar if this was the other way around. Poor dog, the owner was very reasonable not to flip

Yeah this! Imagine the dog hating if the westie attacked 2 cats for no reason.

Are your cats insured op? If she or her dog are injured she'll probably making a claim. I think you'll need to keep them in from now one, next time they could pick a fight with something much bigger.

Cats are mean buggers. One used to stalk my old dog up the street and hiss and spit if poor dog dared to look in his direction.

My idiot spaniel LOVES chasing invading cats out of his garden. He's an absolute wimp usually but thinks he's Tyson Fury when there's a cat running away from him. One day he'll pick on the wrong cat and that will end his fighting career.

Careful splitting up the cats in a fight I got bitten trying to get mine off of a dog.

My Dcat refuses to be contained in the house but also hates/scared of dogs and goes into super puffed up mode as soon as one walks by and will go for them, most local dog walkers seem to cross the road now.

Years ago our 2 cats attacked a neighbours visiting terrier. They were both former strays, soppiest, most lovely boys once neutered and settled with us. But they had had very hard lives, ripped ears and tongues, loads of scars etc.
I heard a dog yelping and went outside to find the two of them had cornered a little dog against a wall in next doors back garden and were taking swipes at it-they managed to scratch its eye! I was so embarrassed 😳
Got them in and offered a million apologies. The dog belonged to a visitor and my cat’s obviously considered it their territory I guess.

They also both stole a joint of beef once. I found the two of them dragging a cooked beef joint up the drive. No idea where they stole it from, it was still warm! They were very pleased with themselves. I let them keep it as it was in no state to give back!

They were the loveliest boys but little toe rags sometimes.

I would assume the dog started it! Yorkies can be aggressive yappy little sods!

It was a Westie, not a Yorkie.

I think they deserve extra Dreamies tonight.

Does a dog deserve treats if they attack a cat then as well?

Florissant · 18/03/2023 08:44

That poor dog and its owner. That must have been very distressing for both of them.

I've had cats all of my life and I've never heard of cats behaving this way so it all sounds very odd.

Ok so my neighbour told me today she saw one of my cats - the more placid one - go for two more dogs today was they were walked by.

Aside from these poor dogs, I really don’t know what to make of this behaviour. It’s extremely unlike her. She’s very calm and placid, very loving with us and generally stays inside for days and days, will pop out for a few hours and then be back inside for days of sleeping and cuddles. If anything it’s her sister that is the overly territorial one, who has had numerous battles with local cats and is the one that sees off foxes if they get too close, especially to the kids.

This is a very very sudden change in her behaviour. She’s two and is the one that cuddles up with our newish kitten so not very territorial in that way.

I think a sudden change in behaviour needs to be addressed by a vet as it could be a sign of something medically going on.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/03/2023 18:43

I think she needs to see a vet - a few conditions can present with an increase in aggression - low thyroid being one.
