I tried putting a garbage bag over mine when I wasn't home but the little turds got inside it. That appeared to make it even more fun.

I now have a felt Christmas tree.

Maybe get another 3 trees and put one in each corner of the room, resulting in the kitten running in perpetual circles in the centre of the room as it doesn't know which one to attack. Or maybe attach strong magnets to the tree and the kitten's collar with the same polarity pointing outwards thus repelling it every time it gets too close?

MistyRock · 02/12/2022 06:04

Put loads of cucumbers around the base.

thelobsterquadrille · 02/12/2022 06:10

It won't happen - you've basically bought them a giant play zone Grin

Brandymakesmerandy · 02/12/2022 06:11

Just remove anything that can hurt the cat and admit defeat 🤷‍♀️🤣

orbitalcrisis · 02/12/2022 06:16

Is your christmas tree in a magic painting on the wall? No wonder your cat is so interested! Can you put an anti-cat enchantment on it?

Morechocmorechoc · 02/12/2022 06:17

Say no loudly every time and remove. Of you let them stay in it they will every year. Our don't go in the tree as we didn't let them as kittens. Same as our old cat didn't go upstairs at my parents as was never allowed. They're not stupid.

Also second earlier posters comment. Cat that likes to climb and jumo, you're asking for it to get strangled with thay collar. Cats don't need collars. Take it off!!

perenniallymessy · 02/12/2022 08:23

I think my cats must be broken. Even as kittens they didn't attempt to climb the tree, and they both love climbing trees and meowing at everyone as though they're stuck Hmm They have always batted the baubles at the bottom and used to chase them around the house but they are too lazy for that these days.

The only problem we had was my idiot boy cat chewing the wires of the lights. There I was moaning about the rubbish quality of manufacturing these days and I realised the wire was broken. He used to chew all sorts of wires but luckily grew out of that!

Further evidence of their brokenness- they really aren't fussed by catnip. They will be mildly interested for about five seconds then wander off. Yet give them some chlorine smelling swimwear and they go crazy, dragging it off the airer and rolling around in it. They will also not play with toys anymore- they just look at us like we're stupid. Why fake hunt when you can head outside and hunt for real Wink

Summersdreaming · 02/12/2022 08:29

Both my kittens have got stuck in trees this year already 🙄our house backs onto the woods.. so I can't see the Christmas tree lasting 5 minutes!! I'm putting it off till next week 😅

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 02/12/2022 08:39

you cannot keep a kitten out of a Christmas tree.

use kitten-safe decorations. we got a big bag of "natural" baubles that are basically twigs twisted into spheres, and seedheads and other bits of exotic dried foliage. also dried orange slices make for a very pretty colourful decorations, but cats aren't keen on the smell of orange so this encouraged them to leave the tree alone (they didn't leave the tree alone but perhaps they were a bit less enthusiastically destructive than they might have been otherwise)

JoeMaplin · 02/12/2022 08:41

We had a new rescue kitten last year. It’s impossible to keep them out Id say. I’m wondering if to put lights on or not this year as that was the real issue/worry. Not sure if he’ll have grown out of it this year as generally he’s not a climber around the house. But the lure of the aunt thing!!!

ETgo · 02/12/2022 08:44

I have the same problem!!
But he looks so cute 🙂, I have bought double tinsel and decorations to replace what he destroys 😂😂

If you've ever had to extract bits of tinsel from your cats bum you'll know how much cats and decorations dont mix!

DCat 1 could care less about the tree and just ignores it. When we rescued DCat2 though, she climbs it and eats the string off the baubles we have one of these now

CornedBeef451 · 02/12/2022 08:55

I've never found a way. Just keep removing the kitten from the tree!

I only have cheap plastic baubles so it doesn't matter if they come off/get stolen by cats, and just keep collecting them from around the house wherever they've been dragged.

It does make the tree more fun and the cat wrangling is now part of our Christmas traditions!

Stopping them chewing presents is also an ongoing challenge so I switched to cloth bags and they're much less interested and just sleep on top of them now.

CrunchyCarrot · 02/12/2022 09:01

This thread makes me laugh! I have given up with Christmas trees, especially as my cat (now 2) is an incurable climber. Plus all those shiny toys! No, I'm afraid it's a losing battle so I have opted for other types of decorations! 😂

caringcarer · 02/12/2022 09:04

I have up and now I put my Xmas tree in conservatory behind glass door. We can see it but cats can't climb into it.

Picklechamp · 02/12/2022 09:24

Put the tree up without any decorations for a couple of days. Squirt a water pistol into the tree whenever kitten approaches. They quickly learn to leave it alone, and then you can decorate.

This!

Although I used jingle bells with current
asshat cat and am doing the same with the junior asshat kitten. Neither have shown signs of distress, just disgust, and flounce out of the sitting room.

Yeah, no way would that stop my cats I'm afraid 🤣

My boy sits in the sink and shouts until I turn the taps on for him, is he broken? He'd love a water pistol 😅
