My lovely boy died tonight

I hope it's ok to post this. I need to tell someone about my lovely old boy. His name was Mr Cooper, a tabby boy who was feral until he wandered into our garden 11 1/2 years ago - we already had 2 female cats at the time. It's a log story, but he became the most gentle, affectionate, special cat I've ever known (we had several over the past 42 years, all rescues). Tonight, he went outside at about 8, as usual (he used to sit on the step, our house is high up from the pavement). A knock came at the door, some very nice lady asked if I was Mrs so-and-so, and told me my boy was dead. He'd been hit by a car outside our house, and someone had taken him to this lady's house, on my street, because she's got a microchip scanner. He'd been killed outright. I went with her to her house, picked him up in a towel, stroked his little face and paws then buried him in a hole my husband dug. I'll miss him SO much.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your dcat, he was so handsome. Time heals and you will have all the lovely memories of him. Sending hugs

I'm so sorry. What a handsome chap in those photos.

My friend lost a cat in the exact same circumstances last year, and now some time has elapsed, she's found a lot of comfort in the fact that someone found him and came to tell her. It made a huge difference to her.

Nicklebox · 31/10/2022 13:27

That's so sad i'm so sorry. We have a tabby male cat too called Olly he looks a lot like yours same colour but ours has white socks and a white tummy. Ours is 7 years old and not very affectionate unless he wants food I'm hoping he will change as he gets older.

Ludo19 · 31/10/2022 13:36

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Mr Cooper looked very distinguished.
He had a very long and happy life with you, showered with love and affection.
Take your time to grieve, he was a valued member of your family.

ladymalfoy45 · 31/10/2022 13:39

So handsome. He looks like he really loved a cuddle. So sorry. Xxx

ShutYerYapAndGetOnWithIt · 31/10/2022 20:25

Thank you all, for your kind messages. I'm glad that he had such a long and happy life, and glad that he (hopefully) was dead straightaway. It helped a lot to know that the kind lady up the road found him, scanned him and came and told me. She was very caring. I took her a bunch of flowers this morning. It's been a busy day (which I've been pleased about).

I'm so very sorry OP he is an absolute darling. He'll be waiting for you when it's your time. Bless him and you xxxx

whiteroseredrose · 31/10/2022 21:15

I'm so sorry, he was such a beautiful cat. They are such independent souls and need their freedom which makes it so scary to be their owner. But that is the only way that they can have a full life.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 31/10/2022 21:17

I'm so so sorry, such a terrible thing to happen. Unmumsnetty hugs from me to you for Mr Cooper.

murasaki · 31/10/2022 21:18

What a gorgeous boy.

Beamur · 31/10/2022 21:20

What a splendid cat and a fabulous name. So sad to have him taken like that but some comfort perhaps in knowing it was swift.
My cats are my family. The grief is real. Big hugs.

MyMumTracyBeaker · 31/10/2022 21:21

I'm so sorry. What a beautiful boy Mr Cooper looks.

So glad he found you Flowers.

ReedOfFate · 31/10/2022 21:21

Oh what a handsome lad Mr Cooper was! They are never “just a cat”; it’s so sad Flowers

Thank you, all. It's good to know that there are others who understand how I feel. The house is strangely quiet without him. He'd been my constant companion since I came out of hospital 15 months ago - my husband misses him too but he's at work all day. I can't imagine never having another cat, after 42 years of having them (all rescues), but then again, I can't imagine ever loving another cat like I loved him. He really was the nicest cat I've ever known.

What a wise face. I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like Mr Cooper had a wonderful life with you and I hope that brings some comfort.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/11/2022 09:49

I have a chatty cat too, so I can imagine how quiet it is now for you.

Iamacatslave · 01/11/2022 12:43

Such a handsome chap. RIP Mr Cooper.

viques · 01/11/2022 14:41

There is real history behind those eyes! I am pleased for him that he spent his last years in comfort and love, and although I know you are grieving deeply , you know what happened to him, and it sounds as though his end was quick I don’t know how people cope with never knowing.

ShutYerYapAndGetOnWithIt · 01/11/2022 15:01

Thanks for all your kind words. It comforts me to know that others know how I feel. He was my very best boy. The grandchildren used to pick him up and carry him about. He loved being with them (I haven't told them yet, they're 11 and 8).

One photo shows him with the little cat from next door, who he seemed to really like. (He used to sit and watch her eat his food, the little madam)

Lovely photos Op. He really was a special cat. Thinking of you.

Findingmypurposeinlife · 01/11/2022 16:11

Awwww, Loving the latest photos ❤ His memory lives on and now he has touched many more hearts 💕 I know he wont be easily forgotten, but he will always have a beautiful place in your heart. Deservedly so.

Sakura7 · 01/11/2022 18:24

What a lovely boy ❤️

Hope you're doing as well as you can be, it's so tough losing them.

ShutYerYapAndGetOnWithIt · 01/11/2022 19:55

Thank you. In all the years we had him, he never once scratched or bit anyone, and was never nasty. It was (sad, I know) a routine every morning, for the past few months, for me to watch Frasier, whilst the boy cuddled up against my chest, his back legs wrapped up in my dressing gown. He loved it, the baby 😻
