My cat was killed on the road yesterday and I’m devastated.

I knew that, as we live near a road that my cat loved to cross daily, it would be likely she’d be hit one day, but she wasn’t the kind of cat you could keep indoors and wanted to be out living her best life … I’m crying writing this 😢

I'm sorry for your loss x

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss. It's shit, isn't it. Lost a beloved dog on the road 4 years ago, and it still hurts, though less with time. 🐾

Mollyplop999 · 16/07/2022 06:04

So so sorry. Happened to mine 4 weeks ago. Sending you a hug. Xx

I’m sorry you’ve gone through this sudden loss of your pet too, it’s really distressing, especially when it’s so sudden 😢

One of mine died like this 4 years ago and it still makes me cry! I’m so sorry this has happened. Some cats just love to be out and about, there’s nothing you could have done . 💐

Brokenheartedbluebellsmum · 16/07/2022 06:30

Thank you everyone, in one respect I’m glad that my cat didn’t suffer, as I think she was gone instantly, but I can’t get the image of her out of mind 😢

I looked out if my bedroom window and saw dustbin men bending down on the other side of my car, I instantly knew something must’ve happened to an animal, and then I got the shock of my life when one of the men stood up and I saw he was holding my Bluebell’s lifeless body over his arm. My son and I ran out of the house just as the man laid her in the grass verge and put a jumper over her… a car had hit her apparently, and stopped a bit further along, and the driver was shaken too 😢 … it was no body’s fault, but I just wish we didn’t have a road right outside with a wooded area across it, as that’s where she loved to venture.

My friend arrived and took bluebell to the vets and she’ll be looked after there before I can have her ashes home…. I’m absolutely gutted

It’s a terrible feeling isn’t it, knowing that you can’t help them, I’m sorry you’ve also experienced the loss of your pet in this way …. I couldn’t have kept my cat in if I wanted to, she was originally a stray who moved in with her previous owners when she was about one year old I believe.

However, when lockdown first began in March 2020 she started visiting our house and ‘adopted’ us…. Her owners at the time decided that Bluebell wanted to be with us (she was clearly looked after well by them, but they had other pets that I think she didn’t want to live with) and so they asked us if we’d like to keep her as she was obviously happy visiting us …. We’ve had her for just over 2 years now, and she gave us so many laughs and was a real character!
I was always concerned that she could end up being hit, but there’s no way on earth she would’ve been happy to either stay indoors or be confined to just our garden.

I’m upset for her too because she was only now around 4 years old, which is no age, but I’m trying to console myself with the fact that she was happy and led her life doing exactly as she pleased.

So very sorry for your loss @Brokenheartedbluebellsmum It's utterly heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet this way. I too have a cat with a wanderlust, and I worry about all the dangers out there. He'd never forgive me if I kept him in (I've tried!)
I know it's devastating for you but we can be thankful that she would have known nothing about it. And she had a lovely life with many adventures.
And how lovely that she was treated with such respect by all concerned Flowers

I'm so so sorry OP. The same happened to our little cat a few years ago. We rescued her from a shelter and had only had her for 9 months. It is utterly devastating. I have to think though that although her time with us was short, we gave her a lovely life before she passed and I'm proud of that. You should be too.

PinkButtercups · 16/07/2022 06:54

So sorry OP.
This happened to our lovely grey male. He was only 2 years old.

The most gentle cat you could ever meet and great with kids even letting them pretend he was their 'doll' in the pushchair. He was sleeping under a car and it reversed 😢.

It’s a constant worry isn’t it, but we have to let them live how their happiest to.

I think she did pass instantly, but I think she was spooked by the noise of the dustbin lorry (as I’ve seen her before running towards home when she’s heard it approaching) and just ran towards our house without being aware of the car driving in front of it.

I hate to think her last thought was probably the feeling of fear of the dustbin lorry coming along, and I’d rather she passed with happy thoughts if that makes sense. 😢

Thank you, your cat must’ve been a happy cat too to be given a loving home, I’m sorry for your loss too and she was only young, but she had freedom to roam and do what made her happy, just like Bluebell.

Sorry to hear that, you must’ve been heartbroken, 💐 for me it’s the suddenness of it all, and even though the possibility of it happening was always in the back of my mind, nothing stops you from experiencing that sense of shock and disbelief if it does happen.

Oh no, I feel for you and everyone else whose had the same thing happen 😢 I wanted to run to her but was stopped by my son, but I held her in my arms for ages when she’d been wrapped in her favourite blanket… I literally can’t stop sobbing 😢

Very sorry for your cat.

Take comfort in the fact that Bluebell was very happy and was living her life on her terms.

megacat · 16/07/2022 10:30

My beautiful boy was taken in the same way 6 months ago and I still haven't recovered.

You're right in that you know it could happen but the shock when it does is terrible.

It does of course get easier as time passes but I mourn my lovely boy every single day. He was very special to me.

So sorry you are going through this pain. Flowers I found printing and framing photos helped as I can still see him around the house.
