Anyone else’s cat turn their nose up at these delicacies?

My British shorthair is an insanely fussy creature. He happily scoffs his biscuits, duck treats and tolerates small amounts of wet food, but turns his nose up at salmon, mackerel, cod, cheese and today, a prawn (despite miaowing at me while I was deshelling them!)

Is anyone else’s cat like this? Hmm He used to be at least willing to try things but now he just sniffs and walks off in disgust.

My cat only eats prawns and Felix (sachet not tins)

I don't bother trying him with anything these days, he seems happy enough

TeaMeBasil · 02/07/2022 13:57

Mines like this - she loves her wet food, biscuits and dreamies but the most she'll tolerate of 'people food' is tuna and licking the odd dropped crisp. But that's it.

She has no interest in prawns, chicken or anything else at all. Doesn't stop her attempting to have a good sniff of whatever you are eating though! I just let her now since I know she has no plans to take a bite!

spanktastic · 02/07/2022 13:58

My cat hates fish, fresh or fish flavours, but she loves the cheap cat biscuits

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 02/07/2022 14:05

Ours will only eat biscuits. My DH is resigned to this after many years trying to tempt her with various juicy tidbits however FIL still insists on trying 😂

IodineQueen · 02/07/2022 14:10

I’m glad it’s not just my cat 🤣

He does this too. I discovered he likes the smell of gin but pulls a face at beer. He also gets very excited when I put all the shopping out on the kitchen table for him so he can investigate and approve it before I put it away.

My old boy (19) loves Purina biscuits, most wet food, plus tinned tuna or cooked chicken. He's very easy-going. He was feral when we took him in 11 years ago, so he's probably grateful to get food on a regular basis

CraftyGin · 02/07/2022 14:13

My 3yo left home a while back. He visits every other day and sits patiently at the outside bowl we have.

He will eat Purina from a can, but not from a sachet.

Obviously, someone else is feeding him, but how snobby can he get?

BudgetTarzan · 02/07/2022 14:19

One of ours will turn his nose up at roast chicken. Unless it is outside. Or thrown at him. Or placed on his body. But never out of a bowl, inside. At the moment he's working his way through the Purina they all hate but which he will eat off the bathroom outside windowsill.

Our other rescued cat who was half starved when we got her would rather go without food for days than eat food which I have bought in bulk after seeing her demolish a tester box.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2022 14:21

Dh had gastro pub fish and chips and raved about it, asked for a doggy bag for the Bengal who he cut it up for at home. He didn’t eat it but he did flick it all over the kitchen in protest at us being out past 9pm.

Haddock has quite the range.

IodineQueen · 02/07/2022 14:21

I forgot to post photos of my fussy boy Grin

The photo changes things. When you look that good you can be demanding.

TroysMammy · 02/07/2022 14:27

Yes. Loves his Hills biscuits. Goes mad for fresh tuna but it has to be steamed and not cooked any other way. Likes salmon and haddock but not for or mackerel. Doesn't like lamb, loves chicken. Will steal a raw prawn but won't eat it or cooked ones. Also loves a sparrow including beak, feet and feathers.

Fizbosshoes · 02/07/2022 14:27

Our cats will refuse most things - salmon, mackerel, chicken etc in their own bowls, however will happily scoff the same items from the compost bin or their human slaves plate....Confused

TroysMammy · 02/07/2022 14:29

That's the second time I typed in cod and it changed it to for!

Julen7 · 02/07/2022 14:32

Yes my, Maine Coon exactly the Same - biscuits, wet food (not too much) but please no fresh chicken, prawns, salmon or anything like that 🙀

jaundicedoutlook · 02/07/2022 17:51

Bernard here, also a BSH, will eat pretty much anything if I let him. Unfortunately any fish or similar gives him the most appalling runs, so we have to be pretty careful not to let him anywhere near it.

My cat is 15 and she used to turn her nose up at anything remotely fishy whether tinned food or the real stuff! Nowadays she scoffs tuna, chicken, salmon, whatever I give her and she also licks plates clean like our dogs used to 🤣🤣x they are strange animals

gingersplodgecat · 02/07/2022 17:59

This is where having multiple cats comes in handy.

If they turn their nose up at their own food, they know full well that if they walk off then someone else will eat it and they'll come back to an empty bowl.

PeanutCat1 · 02/07/2022 18:01

Both of my cats are like this, they might occasionally have a go at some grated cheese but only if it's been thrown from the highchair, definitely not if it's been given to them Grin

One of them has a horrid habit of sinking his teeth into loaves of bread (wrapped) and packs of rolls, we have about 2 minutes to get them put away after shopping or else there'll be covered in 50 tiny stabby marks. He never eats it though!

Woolandwonder · 02/07/2022 18:05

They are so ridiculous. Both will only eat one cat food, one flavour of dreamies and they ignore roast chicken, salmon, ham etc etc, but one has a real interest in spicy crisps and very particular pale ales..she's like a middle aged man.

KatherineJaneway · 02/07/2022 18:08

My cats hate 'fatty' meats. Won't touch salmon or legs or wing meat of a chicken. Give them chicken breast meat and they will wolf them down.

RaraRachael · 02/07/2022 18:08

My cat only eats pouches of wet food, Go Cat and dreamies. He has no interest in fish, prawns, chicken or anything else that I'm cooking for humans. However it does mean that I can leave anything out of the worktop and I know he won't touch it!

IodineQueen · 02/07/2022 18:40

@jaundicedoutlook he is gorgeous Shock

Mines the opposite. Fussy with her wet food but she will eat any human food you give her

QuestionableMouse · 02/07/2022 18:44

I've just given mine a tin of Applaws chicken and shrimp (I think) and she won't even look at it. My sister's cat practically has your hands off for the same stuff!
