Do your Dcats make eye contact with you?

Just curious. One of my Dcats (tuxedo cat) makes eye contact a lot but the other (white cat) doesn't. I have read that making eye contact is aggressive in "cat language", but tuxedo cat is definitely not being aggressive - he looks as if he is trying to understand me.

So, I am interested to know about all the other Litter Tray cats Smile.

Yes, all three of them, Notmycat feels more if a disappointed glare though

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/08/2021 14:44

And Fatcat is a feed me now stare

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2021 14:45

Yes he does. Try looking at your cat and narrowing your eyes and watch them do it back. It's the cat equivalent of a smile Smile

CinnabarRed · 10/08/2021 14:46

All four of mine make eye contact - three more than the fourth.

CoffeeRunner · 10/08/2021 14:46

Yes both mine do.

Although I think one is more casting a disapproving judgement of some sort Grin.

knackeredcat · 10/08/2021 14:47

Yes, he reciprocates my slow blinks Smile

burninglikefire · 10/08/2021 14:50

Yes exactly - I thought cats generally made eye contact with their people. Tuxedo cat looks as if he is trying to communicate with me. Does this mean that the cat behaviour people have got it wrong? Or perhaps, that the quality of answer from a google search is not amazing. For example:

"Eye contact, which we view as friendly, our furry companions view as assertive or threatening."

DramaAlpaca and knackeredcat I am going to hunt both Dcats down now to narrow my eyes at them and blink at them.

You might be able to tell that work is slow today!

White cat has a skill of not looking at me, but doing so in a disapproving way. I think I am a disappointment to him.

Yes, usually from about an inch away from my nose if he can get close enough.

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 10/08/2021 15:06

Mine does. With scorn and pity.

@sashh

Mine doe the slow blink back at me when I do it to her.
So does our Maine Coon and if I wink at him slowly he'll wink back at me
burninglikefire · 10/08/2021 15:21

What beautiful cats! Still haven't tracked my two down to blink at them.

I love the scorn and pity comment!

My Bengal did, he’d look right into your soul.

Current boss sometimes does but is very timid generally.

oscarandelliesdad · 10/08/2021 15:43

We've always been a dog family and ended up adopting a pair of strays. And now looking after a poorly kitten. Have to say, I am amazed at how much I love, love, love them. Such funny little souls. Here is latest addition

Yes both of them do.

MilduraS · 10/08/2021 16:12

My British shorthair refused to make eye contact as a kitten and for her first couple of years. She'd stare at me then quickly look away when I looked back. She slowly grew out of it and now at 5 years we squint at each other a lot. The other two cats I have had, learned to squint on day one. They all do it to each other right before they play fight which makes me laugh.

JoanOgden · 10/08/2021 16:18

Yes, sometimes we stare into each other's eyes for ages. Possibly the most intimate relationship in my life Hmm

heldinadream · 10/08/2021 16:24

I’m so glad you asked this! I don’t have my own Dcats but I house and cat sit, and I’m on a sit at the moment in a house that I’ve sat about six times now with 2 Dcats and I feel like they finally know me properly and we’ve been making more eye contact (definitely not aggressive!) which I’ve really enjoyed. So it's lovely to see a conversation about this.

I feel like they like me now. Ok I’m not their proper human but I’m all right, I’ll do. Grin

Dilbertian · 10/08/2021 17:13

FattyCat makes plenty of eye contact with us. He's also a white cat, but he has yellow eyes. What colour eyes does your white cat have OP? Could he have defective vision? Every cat I have known well has made frequent eye contact, even if only to say "Feed me, minion."

SquirryTheSquirrel · 10/08/2021 17:14

Yes - I do the slow blink which is supposedly a sign of affection, and they usually do it back.

MadameOvary81 · 10/08/2021 17:19

All six of them, but only if i've been bad. Grin

It's really not aggressive...as someone else said, staring and blinking is actually a sign that they bloody love you. But sometimes they stare a tad too long and it all becomes a bit like Fatal Attraction and I start hearing Barry White songs in the background.

iklboo · 10/08/2021 17:22

Yes. Yes they do.
