Can't sleep, cat hasn't come in tonight.

Don't think I'm going to sleep tonight. We have a rescue cat that has been with us for two months. She had never been out at all before living with us so she's been very wary of outside. She's only really gone out when we go in the garden but loves going out when it's dark for a bit on her own but she's always stayed in our garden.

If she goes out she's always back every 20 minutes or so.
I last saw her about 11pm when she came in for some food and now there's no sign of her.
I feel sick with worry. She's completely stolen all our hearts and I'm sitting here with the back door open thinking the worst, desperately wanting her to walk in the door. Sad

I'll hopefully not worry so much if she does it again as at least I know she will come back when ready.
It was just the first time she's gone out of sight. She sticks by one of us at all times usually, she loves to be around one of her humans.
It's kind of good she's obviously getting more confident being outside. But not as good for me who will worry!

No, you’ll always worry 😄

It must have been the night for it last night. My Ollie did the same, normally always in no later than 8 and the bugger didn’t come back, cue a fitful night! Fortunately I got up at 4 and there he was at the back door 🐈‍⬛

We had cats years ago and as we lived rurally they spent all their time out and rarely stayed in at night. Seems I've forgotten how cats are.
Next time I'll be going to bed and not up all night waiting for her to appear. I'm sure I will wake to check if she's back at some point though.
Photo of the guilty one hopefully attached.

My two are indoor, but go into my enclosed garden. If I dontbget them in before it gets dark they are absolute buggers to get in at this time of year. Cheddar is absolutely invisible in the dark!

This thread has reminded me of the time my cat totally disappeared at bedtime, very uncharacteristically. I assumed she was still out and lay awake unable to sleep, terrified she had met a dreadful fate. Until at some point in the early hours I heard an odd rustling sound and realised that the little minx had found a hiding place under my bed Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/07/2021 19:51

A curfew isn’t a terrible idea, they get used to it & it saves you worrying.

Snozzlemaid · 17/07/2021 20:33

She loves going out at dusk and usually comes in by 11. But last night she was nowhere in sight and didn't respond to dreamies or the shake of the bell on her favourite toy that usually works.

Beautiful cat OP, glad she's back. Madam appears unapologetic for scaring you silly HmmGrin

6 years ago my lovely boy went out for a walk and didn't come back for 21 days !!! .. before scratching at the terrace door in the middle o Poldark !!

He is 8 this month . We still have no idea where he went (neither does his sister) not shit in a shed as not thin.. no idea ... but never known anxiety like it ...

Finknottlesnewt · 17/07/2021 20:40

Shut ... or shit !!

coogee · 17/07/2021 20:47

Ours spends all night and all day out unless it starts raining. It’s his first UK summer and I think he’s making the most of it.

He lived outside from birth until we rescued him, so it’s second nature.

I’d like to live on Sancerre and ready salted crisps but it’s not a good idea.

Your in charge not the cat (says she who sets her alarm to 6am to feed the cat).

Our boy is still missing it's agony Sad

Burtknowsbest · 18/07/2021 16:53

So sorry to hear this lollipop - don’t lose faith yet, it’s still early days and every chance he’ll just come strolling back home.

I presume you’ve put it on your local Facebook group and contacted the local vets? Such a worrying time and I hope that he’s back home soon! Flowers

lollipoprainbow · 18/07/2021 17:37

@Burtknowsbest yeah it's on Facebook groups, we've done posters and walked the streets there's nothing else I can do Sad

Snozzlemaid · 18/07/2021 18:22

Oh my heart breaks for you lollipop.
I can't imagine how worried you must be. I hope he's back with you really soon Thanks

@snozzlemaid I really felt your pain ! I took in a ‘problem’ kitten from an an acquaintance, she was always a bit of a worry when she was young, she had been neglected. I had flooring work done in my flat, everything ripped up etc. I was very explicit with the contractor that the doors had to be kept shut or she would bolt. Day 2 she disappeared. I had already printed the missing posters when my flat mate said he could hear scratchy noises under his bed. With much wafting of open food sachets she eventually unravelled herself from under the floor boards. We had to hold her down as she wanted to burrow back under as soon as she had eaten. Cats will survive, unless there is some unwelcome intervention. So sorry @lollipoprainbow, I know exactly how you feel. 😿

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2021 18:34

Brilliant @lollipoprainbow!

NiceTwin · 19/07/2021 18:37

Ah brilliant news @lollipoprainbow, is he none the worse for his wandering?

lollipoprainbow · 19/07/2021 18:41

No he was out in the bushes in the car park ! I had been calling and looking out there for past few days but nothing! I gave it one last try and he meowed, I grabbed him super fast !!

Snozzlemaid · 19/07/2021 18:47

@lollipoprainbow I'm so delighted to hear this. How amazing for you. I bet he's grounded now for a bit.
They have no idea the worry they cause, do they.

Fantastic update Lollipop ❤. So glad your cat is home!

Mine loves this warm weather. I've been staying up until past 1am to close the back door after him! Can't sleep until he returns.
