My cat just died naturally at home and I feel awful

This has just happened so probably won’t make much sense. My cat was 20 and a half, my absolute best friend and I don’t remember life before her. She’s been a bit frail but generally well enough but today she was incredibly lethargic and I could tell she wasn’t right. She’s had off days before but picked up. Everything was made more complicated by having friends round for a arranged in well in advanced get together. When they left, she perked up a bit and ate and drank some water and seemed OK so I thought I’d see how she was in the morning but she’s just died.

The last 2 minutes were horrific. I just googled whether it would have been as bad for her as it was for us and everything online says that yes, dying naturally is awful for them and they should always be PTS.

I just feel awful. At least she was at home surrounded by her family but I feel like after a lifetime of love, I’ve let her down at the most important time. Not sure what I want from posting this but I’m devastated.

I was so relieved when our old boy passed naturally at home. The trip to the vet would have been so stressful for him.
He ate and drank the night before, was using his tray and keeping himself clean so he wanted to be here until the end.
Sometimes you have to make the choice for them, but sometimes they make it for themselves!

Aww I'm so sorry. My 10 and a half year old cat died at home in November. I found her a couple of hours max after my partner last saw her. I understand how hard it is.

But as pp's have said she had a good amount of life. A few minutes of pain is obviously awful but there are lots of ways she could die which are so much worse. I know talk of it could be worse isn't always very empathetic. I just mean we should be greatful for small mercy's like this.

I was distraught finding my cat. But after a little while I did take comfort in her not being ill and just having a normal last day.
Sending hugs op xxFlowers

I'm sorry to hear that, but I've had two cats put to sleep, and one that died unexpectedly, and I do think that on balance the one who died naturally had the best death. She wasn't popped in a box and taken to the vet - one moment she was sitting at my feet, and the next she was dead. I think it was a heart attack, as she wasn't very old, but she was a bit tubby and had a heart murmur (and I didn't over-feed her or feed her treats - she was a very lazy cat, bless her).
