Does your cat have a favourite person in your household?

My husband often remarks that I'm his favourite. He follows me around the home and when he feels like being affectionate, he always comes to me. However my husband does interact with him and is usually the sole feeder for him. I wish it wasn't like this as I think my husband feels a bit left out (though he says he doesn't mind). Is it usual that cats will bond to predominantly one person, what's your experience?

Yep

Finfintytint · 16/12/2020 08:01

Yes. Cat ignores DH most of the time. If he’s up earlier than me the cat will come and wake me up for breakfast rather than demand any food from DH.

dementedpixie · 16/12/2020 08:03

One of mine follows me about the most and the other seems to prefer the kids and will go and sleep with them. He also speaks a lot more to dh and rubs round his legs a lot. Fickle creatures!

BarrytheFatcat · 16/12/2020 08:05

Yes female cat prefers to sit on DPs lap, I think it because he's warmer generally.

My Tom cat is a total mummy's boy though!

dementedpixie · 16/12/2020 08:05

They both know that dh gives them treats (small freeze dried meat pieces) in the morning before he goes to work so they ambush him in the kitchen

RandomMess · 16/12/2020 08:06

Oh yes!!

Boy cat not too fussy but girl cat...

They came to us around their 2nd birthday from a single lady. I was a SAHP for the first 10 months and she was stuck to me like glue, DH was pretty jealous that his cat was so in to me.

For the next 5 years I worked full time and DH did shorter hours to do school pick up. Cat would be all over him but if I walked in the room she would leap off and ignore him with a "it wasn't me" attitude.

Then the last 5 years we are more equal but she can be all over the DC these days and she does the leaping off "wasn't me" thing with them now Grin

My DC at university isn't home that much, but our cat clearly likes her best. Even though she never feeds it or anything. The cat likes me second best. She is clearly least interested in my younger DC.

steppemum · 16/12/2020 08:07

yes, me.
I feed him, interact with him and cuddle him.
No-one else does to the same extent really and then they moan that he isn't as friendly to them.

he will ask anyone for food, but if he is really hungry, eg early morning, it is me he wakes up!

Fortunately it doesn't happy often

VettiyaIruken · 16/12/2020 08:10

Our cat has ranked us.
My husband is her clear favourite. She is glued to his side in a very uncatlike way.
Then our eldest son
Then our youngest son
Then me. Her 'im out of options' option 😂

YesItsMeIDontCare · 16/12/2020 08:11

Absolutely me. Why yes, I am smug about it 😁 (except the accompanying him to the toilet bit - he will not do a poo without me there).

LubaLuca · 16/12/2020 08:12

Big cat loves me the most, little kitten is fickle but will soon learn.

BarkHoneyBark · 16/12/2020 08:20

My DH, who really wasn’t a cat person. The cat absolutely adores him. Tolerates other people. Walks around with dh telling him about his day. Dh used to come home at lunchtime and they’d have a special 10 minutes on the bench in the garden while he brushed the cat.

Cat would get very annoyed if that didn’t happen.

RandomMess · 16/12/2020 08:22

Yeah I'm allergic to cats hence I am the chosen one 🤦🏼‍♀️

BaitandSwitch · 16/12/2020 08:27

Yes, fickle appears to be the word here for our little bundles of furry joy. I feel a bit better now, knowing that cats having a favourite person is a usual thing.

Our cat has a preferred servant - this is DH but with this role comes responsibility and the cat gets cross with him if he sleeps when she's awake or he goes to the bathroom or he leaves the house. She was delighted when lockdown started and DH started wfh - that was when he got promoted to 24/7 service. She tries to always be as close as possible to him so this currently means walking in front of the screen in his work meetings, walking on the piano or knocking his piano books over during his online lessons, sitting on his keyboard whilst he is trying to work, sleeping on him up to his nose and licking his face - once going for a tongue in the mouth. He worships her - its amusing as he wasn't keen when I got a cat.

HouchinBawbags · 16/12/2020 08:31

Our cat was abandoned at our door (repeatedly as her feral mummy who I used to feed. She wouldn't take her back but kept the other two) before she could open her eyes. I dedicated my life for weeks trying to keep her alive, hand bottle feeding her, wiping her bum to make her toilet, watching over her for hours twice when she suddenly went downhill fast and almost died. Just feeding her every couple of hours by a tiny pipette was knackering.
She also had to stay in the kitchen because DH doesn't like cats and is allergic so I spent most of my time sitting on a blanket on the uncomfortable kitchen floor.

So of course as soon as she was bigger and independent she latched onto DH and has never let her beloved daddy go. I never could re-home her as intended because she picked her dad and that was it. I barely get a look in 6 years later. I mean she likes me and all, but I'm not DH. DH gets climbed up when he gets home from work. It's been 7 years now and DH will sit there for hours unwilling to shift positions on the settee no matter how uncomfortable he is because Cat is on his lap as usual.

RandomMess · 16/12/2020 08:31

@SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat that all sounds familiar our cats and dog were thrilled with lockdown and me continuing to WFH...

DH is thrilled I am WFH as he is no longer pestered, just me!!

DCat still likes to comment on him making dinner though wrapped around his neck whilst he cooks...

Beamur · 16/12/2020 08:33

Yep. But they are chancers and spread their love around. Two out of our three love me the most. One sleeps curled up with me at night. Our third seems to like DD most, which she is thrilled by as she's never been the favourite before.
DH slightly out of the loop, which is a bit sad as previous cat was a Daddy's boy and we all still miss him a lot.

moglovesmincepies · 16/12/2020 08:35

Favourite person is Dd. But I'm the one who feeds him Hmm

StCharlotte · 16/12/2020 08:35

All my previous cats have adored me but our current pair who are now one are a different case. Girlcat is quite fair with her affections but Boycat prefers DH and it (irrationally?) pisses me off, especially as he's so gorgeous to cuddle.

His actual favourite is next door's 21 yo daughter who was at home and in the garden all summer and he's really bonded with her. Luckily they don't have a cat flap or I think he'd move in.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 16/12/2020 08:36

Yes! Our female cat ADORES dd and only her. She hates the rest of us but dd gets alllllll the fuss and cuddles and purrs. We get hissed at and ignored!

IDontMindMarmite · 16/12/2020 08:37

Yes, luckily we have two and one favours me (he's my little baby) and the other favours DH (they're bros). Maybe you need more cats?

It's well known folklore that cats will sit on the person who least wants them to. It is partially because it is great cat etiquette to ignore each other, not make eye contact, not chase them. So the cat lovers try too hard. Cats are elitist and don't like try hards.

squashyhat · 16/12/2020 08:42

DH is definitely his favourite. Gets all the chatting and purrs, as well as being expected to give tummy rubs many times a day. I'm spoken to in a huffy 'hurry up' manner if I'm feeding him, and am definitely the second best lap.

MsSquiz · 16/12/2020 08:45

One cat will follow me around, wait outside the bathroom door (when I remember to shut it properly!) and curl up as close as possible (without sitting on me) to me as soon as I sit down! DH is a sad second choice for her

The other loves the baby! She follows DD (1 year old) around the room in the hope that DD will chase her or stroke her and will miaow at her if DD doesn't notice she's in the room! Again, DH is second choice or the evening option, once DD is in bed

Loving this cat thread!!!

My old boy who has passed on now, well it was just the two of us so we bonded very closely. But I did have lots of folk round to visit and he introduced himself to and greeted every visitor by patting them and sitting in front of them purring. When I had people in for parties, he would greet everyone, go to bed for a few hours, then come out and join us, stepping carefully over the instruments, music sheets, beer cans and stuff, say hello to everyone and then finally sit down next to me. I was always so proud of his lovely personality. He was born on 1st August tho so would have been a friendly Leo.

He always slept with me, on my thighs, but as he got older he started to follow me everywhere, to the bathroom, to get ready for work. Every single time I returned from work, hed be right behind the door waiting. I hand fed him ten treats at a time. Also made a rod for my own back by feeding g him from my plate and he did become demanding of that and got told off. Over the years, he went from being handshy to lying in my arms draped like a baby with utter trust that he wouldn't be dropped. Thank god I made three videos of him but do really wish I'd made more. I miss him so much, he was such a beautiful little soul. He actually learnt to kiss, he licked all the time, but he observed partner and I kiss on the lips, then did it to me! We went round the circle twice, kissing partner, them him, then he kissed partner, then partner kissed me. It is one of my most cherished memories, that he mimicked our behaviour to be closer to us. But he knew how much I loved him.

We can't wait to get a cat but I'll never forget my first cat Petit Animale.
