I have a very playful 8 month old kitten , he gets bored with the toys that I buy him he prefers bits of string . screwed up paper but he has just got a new favourite toy ,

A Carrot top !

I was chopping a carrot up and the top fell on the floor , he pounced on it and has been playing with it for 15 mins .

I spent £6 on a toy mouse a few days ago, he has batted it 2 or 3 times Hmm

Our cat is obsessed with a weird bobbly string thing found in an old, inherited sewing kit that looks a bit like a heavier blind cord and is, apparently, a curtain weight. He comes running if we so much as pick it up. He can hear it.

TheHighestSardine · 04/06/2020 23:14

Ours too love bits of falling veg from the kitchen worktop. Christmastime drops of cranberries are the best! They bounce around and stand up to play. Blueberries not so much...

AlCalavicci · 04/06/2020 23:23

We had one like that , he pulled the fethers off it within a hour Hmm

Try a plum or a small new potato. They were very popular here.

Your family will think it odd though, “There’s a potato on the floor,”, “yes, it’s the cats”.

Ernies favourite toys used to be the ring pulls off of DS's milk. He would carry them all around the house

I've just deleted a pic iff my phone I took when we moved the tv cabinet. It was full of lost Ernie toys, ring pulls, ping pong balls, Nerf discs

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2020 11:46

Years ago milk bottle tops flattened and threaded onto string used to be a popular toy.

AlCalavicci · 05/06/2020 16:07

@Fluffycloudland77
Ooh that's a good idea , I get Mike and grapefruit juice delivered several times a week .

I do wonder if it would look like a naff Xmas tree decoration tho .

Ours like hair bobbles. She collects them and spend hours passing them from one hand to another. She then collects them and drops them in her dry food bowl.

Least I will be able to find a bobble when we eventually start the school run again!

user1471530109 · 05/06/2020 16:10

She also collects balls of socks and Barbie shoes....

ClientQ · 05/06/2020 16:11

The telephone coil hair bobbles here, screwed up paper balls, cotton wool buds..

whathaveijustseen · 05/06/2020 19:42

Pipe cleaners here, dd1 does at lot of craft and has to guard them carefully, we've caught him trying to open her craft supplies box to get to them!

Oldraver · 05/06/2020 19:51

How could i oh forget tie wraps, they have to be the right size though

TW2013 · 05/06/2020 19:54

A pen, half hidden under furniture is the height of excitement here!

RedPandaFluff · 05/06/2020 19:54

Hair bobbles, paper straws, and boxes here!

TroysMammy · 05/06/2020 19:59

When Haribo was on pouches he would play for ages with the ripped off top. Today he was playing with a sprig of curly parsley.

My 19 year old deaf cat is obsessed with her catnip banana (off Amazon). i have to get her a new one every couple of months and it's the only thing she can be bothered to "kill" and disembowel with her back legs.
She carries it round in her mouth making the most dreadful racket because she's deaf and has no volume control.
The first time I heard this was the middle of the night and I leapt out of bed thinking she was dying but no she was wailing with this banana in her mouth Grin

Ooopsijustsnarted · 05/06/2020 20:09

Mine likes it when we leave pens on the coffee table, he sits on the table- glares at you and then very slowly knocks the pen off the table. He then knocks the pen under the table and spends x amount of time meowing and trying to retrieve the pen, until we give in, lift the very very heavy table up to get the pen back, and thus the cycle starts again.

Also the laser pen, an actual toy he loves.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2020 21:30

Open up a book or magazine, arrange it on the floor like a gable roof. Holding a pen or stick toy put your hand inside wiggling they toy seductively.

They pounce like their fishing a small rodent from a burrow.

You will get scratched but they LOVE that game.

Oriflamme · 05/06/2020 21:43

My cat found a tuft of deer hair in our garden (from a muntjac - we don’t have our own deer park Grin) and that was it, the best toy ever. He kept it safe for months, mostly by stashing it away in my shoe between uses Hmm

Uncoordinated · 05/06/2020 21:48

Ribbons here, and tissue paper from shoe boxes 🤣

Lollypop4 · 05/06/2020 21:50

my cats love the little pom pom art &craft bits you can get...at easter DC had a bunny style one...the cats carry it around so much !

UncleShady · 05/06/2020 21:54

Foil. He's mugged us at Christmas for mince pie foil trays. And the little sod caught me stealing Easter eggs too - but a corner of tin foil scrunched up is the best thing ever.

I used to have a cat that was obsessed with milk carton tops and pencils - behind the sofa was always littered with them.

AlCalavicci · 05/06/2020 23:22

I am so glad I dont own the only slightly barmy cat !

I do have a laser pen for mad puss but I kinda think they are a bit cruel as my cat always chases after a toy / carrot top / bit of paper and runs off with it or brings it back to me to throw again , he can't do that with a red dot and seems to get a bit frustrated after a while.

We sit and watch this kind of thing together too .

An orange spaceman stuffed with catnip from pets at home ... we bought several as they get drenched in cat slobber. Wash, stuff, play...
