My cat seems to want to eat sweet things, any idea why?

He has always tried his luck but recently he has been desperate to eat Jam and homemade fudge

He is driving me crazy

Does anyone know why - is it some form of cat diabetes? Or is he just weird?

Ours adored yoghurt. But my current cats won't touch yogurt. It's a myth that cars can't taste sweet things!

KatyMac · 24/05/2020 17:31

an old cat went wild for mango stones to chew the flesh or and eat melon

But fudge?

Mine loves cakes and biscuits his favorite is chocolate mousse! Will come running when he hears the pot and spoon, much to his disgust he only gets a couple of licks though!

Winkywoop · 24/05/2020 17:36

Just done some googling and apparently cats can't taste sweet things!

I have no idea, very strange!

SpiderPlantSally · 24/05/2020 17:37

Mine never used to be interested in human food apart from fish, meat and cheese, but as they've got older, they'll scrounge anything carby - bread, cake, cereal, even crisps! It's very annoying.

MotherWilliam · 24/05/2020 17:38

My cat's very favourite thing seems to be marmite. I have to fight her off.

Yes! I've noticed this about my older cat recently! I can't walk in the room with cake without him being all over it!

Relieved to hear it's not just him, I was worried.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2020 17:54

Our first cat was obsessed with extra strong mints. He liked them so much he'd try and fish them out of your mouth.

My current cats (both of them) love Marmite too.

Cats are just weird.

overnightangel · 24/05/2020 18:02

My mum’s has taken a fancy to crisps lately, very odd.
He’s 12

ClientQ · 24/05/2020 18:11

Mine loves jacket potatoes more than anything else Confused
Also lemon cheesecake, yoghurt, sour cream, scrambled eggs, baked beans, strong cheese, sour cream pringles, custard..

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2020 20:52

I thought Ollie also loves pork scratchings!
Magic discovered bread yesterday, and she likes hummus.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/05/2020 20:53

Cheddar loves anything going. Especially pasta.

SparkyTheCat · 25/05/2020 16:11

One of mine (thankfully not the diabetic one) goes mad for lemon drizzle cake. He'll fling himself at anyone who has some and try snatch it. No idea why.

newtb · 25/05/2020 16:23

Had one that liked black cherry yoghurt and vindaloo curry.

Another used to like the raw meatball mixture with 3 bird's-eye chillies to 500g mince. She lived to nearly 21.

Weird buggers

MGMidget · 26/05/2020 06:24

MotherWilliam, I can answer (partially) why your cat likes marmite. A vet told me cats love a malty taste. Some cat medicines have his taste to make them attractive (eg an anti hairball paste). Not sure why they a malty flavour though!

Maybe it's something else in the fudge that the cat likes, such as a creamy/buttery taste? My cat will go for anything remotely like this, mayo, icing, cake mixture etc.

borntobequiet · 26/05/2020 06:49

If I bake a cake I have to be careful to cover it after taking it out of the oven (or let it cool in the oven) because otherwise my cat will lick the top off it.

TeddyIsaHe · 26/05/2020 06:58

My old cat used to go wild for olive stones, and in ear headphones. If you left them out she’d chew the ends till they were disintegrated. Also mum’s hearing aids! Funny little thing.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/05/2020 07:18

We had a cat who was generally very mild mannered and laid back but he would get really excited and slightly aggressive at the merest whiff of curry.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/05/2020 08:11

Sybil is another Marmite obsessive fan.

canigooutyet · 26/05/2020 08:32

One of mine has always had a sweet tooth. Fudge, yogurt, biscuits, toffee, flying saucers, sugar and more.

The other one has a thing for raw onion.

They also seem to have missed the dairy intolerance alert. Anything cheese no matter what it’s on although at least thy stopped legging it with pizza slices 🤣

Beetroot is a new one.

We’ve been mugged for iceberg lettuce, ice cubes, watermelon, cauliflower, carrots, pasta, kiwi, certain teas, popcorn spicy stuff and countless other things.

And carrier bags but only specific ones 🤣

Has helped the waistline had to stop ordering kebabs, chips and Chinese.

They’ve been the talk of the vets for the past 8 years, and they cannot understand it either. Weirdos love their check up.

Obviously I do try and stop them, smart bastards work together. 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 26/05/2020 09:16

The first time my parents cat went to the vet, he drank the vets tea!

DelurkingAJ · 26/05/2020 09:20

One of ours will eat anything. She has also completely missed the memo about being lactose intolerant and adores yoghurt in particular. But pretty much anything will be tried. The time she swiped some of my finger bear and the bubbles went up her nose is the only time I’ve seen her truly put out by food or drink.
