Pregnant cat

A few weeks back a cat came to our house and didn't want to leave. We tried all the tricks to find an owner but nobody claimed her so we kept her. Little did we know, she was pregnant and is due in a week or maybe 2 according to the vet.
I forgot to ask about her going outside after the kittens are born. She's in full time at the moment as I don't want her giving birth outside. It's only been for the last week and she is already crying at the door to go out.

Obviously she isn't spayed so is it best to keep her in until the kittens are weaned?

Any other advice to newbies surrounding the whole birth and kittens thing?

I've been reading as much as possible but it's nice to hear from others who have actually experienced it.

Awwwww... a surprise tabby! What more could you wish for on a Monday morning?

sashh · 09/03/2020 09:20

Aw you will have a couple of weeks of bliss, then expect trouble with a capital T.

Are you keeping them all?

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 09:24

I was expecting to only have 3 but I can't bring myself to get rid of 1 so I'm going to keep them.

Is it normal for the mum to just roll all over the kittens?
She's cleaning up her back end now, with no regards to where she lies or puts her feet 🙈

Good luck with 5 cats. Four kittens is going to be mayhem. GrinGrinlooking forward to posts about the carnage they create!

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 10:47

I know 😂
Id feel mean getting rid of one though. How would you even choose?

They are fighting over teats already and they aren't even 5 hours old!

Cats can get pregnant by more than one male, hence the different colour kittens.
I didn't realise that until the stray cat gave birth in my conservatory - two grey tabbies, one "normal" tabby and one black and white.
When I was talking to the lady from the cat rescue I just happened to say that I could never understand why kittens sometimes come out all different, like a kitten lucky dip.
She looked at me like I was mad, then explained Smile

Our stray used to pile her tiny kittens up together, one on top of each other, when she'd go to eat or use the litter tray.
It was a very cute little bundle of kittens !

I'm glad they've all arrived safely !!

madcatladyforever · 09/03/2020 14:05

Arrrggghhhhhh it's unbearably cute - I'm so happy they are all ok.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/03/2020 14:13

I think YouTube is your best bet for newborn kitten videos to see what the other moms do.

She would definitely advise other cats to have an epidural.

nearlynermal · 09/03/2020 16:57

Oh, thank you for the pics, OP! Very happy making.

penguingorl · 09/03/2020 17:30

In my 3 years of Mumsnet use you have definitely posted my favourite ever thread OP Grin Congratulations on your new family of adorableness Flowers

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 18:49

Here's two more pictures.
It's really hard to take photos as they wriggle so much.
I'm surprised that newborn kittens fight with each other! The two stronger ones yelp and kick each other to get to their favourite teats 😂

I AM SO JEALOUS

I’m going to sit outside my house and not move until a pregnant cat walks by that I can steal.

Congratulations & please keep posting photos! ❤️

nearlynermal · 09/03/2020 19:54

OMG the tiny whiskers!!!

leolion81 · 09/03/2020 19:55

I'm so pleased to see a vulnerable pregnant cat picked such a wonderful home! I'm so glad you will keep all the kittens and provide them all with a loving home. Well done to you.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/03/2020 20:00

@sweetkitty

That’s the trouble with men, unreasonable limitations on pet ownership.

JorisBonson · 09/03/2020 20:10

This is the best thread ever!! 😍😍😍

(Ps - I got my boy done at 14 weeks. If they weigh enough most vets will do it then, especially as you're obviously being really responsible about neutering before rehoming them).

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 20:27

She still seems a little shell shocked
She's eating and drinking (she has kitten milk as I read that's good for queen's)
She's had a wee today but no poo
She's feeding the kittens and licking them nicely but she just keeps staring at me and follows me if I leave the room.

She has no temperature and no discharge but her respiration rate is up slightly.

I'm going to take them all the vets first thing, just to make sure.

JorisBonson · 09/03/2020 20:28

That can't hurt. Let her eat as much as she wants too, steamed chicken is good for nursing mamas

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 20:52

Yeah I'm just refilling her bowl as it gets empty.
It's like she's pacing.
I wish I could understand what her meows meant. She says them directly at me.
She's going to the back door and scratching like she wants to go out, even though she's used the litter tray since January.
She nips in the tray and straight back out.
I'm thinking maybe she's constipated.

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/03/2020 20:54

Omg, kittenssssss.
I need them all

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 09/03/2020 21:17

I’ve sent the pic of the tabby to DP. I wants it! Grin

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 21:40

She's FINALLY gone in the litter tray!
She's much calmer now.
She hadn't been since about midnight last night.
Everyone is getting a lick wash and they are not too pleased about it 😂
