My neighbour adopted a timid cat from a rescue place at the weekend. Last night it disappeared through a window.

I don’t know where to start to look for it. I’ve suggested putting the litter tray outside and some food. But other than that I’m clueless.

So calling on the advice of the litter tray!! What on Earth can I do and where to start looking? We are rural.

I’m concerned for the welfare of this poor kitty.

Thank you all for your wonderful advice and support. I would have given up and certainly wouldn’t have used a trap without all of you behind me.

I think it’s a team effort! Well Done The litter tray

Yay I'm so pleased 😀 Well done Dobby.
Please keep us updated, I'd love to know how she settles in with the NDNs.
As SirVix says, I bet when they eventually do let her out she'll be straight over yours for the tuna and dreamies 😹😻

Nettleweed · 21/09/2019 00:33

Well done OP! Your kindness and patience has paid off Flowers

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2019 06:54

I would say that using a trap is actually easier than I thought. Yes she was frightened, but when we took her to NDN she was sitting happily inside it before I released her. We could stroke her through the bars and she was happy to let us. Hopefully because she was only there for half an hour maximum it wasn’t too traumatic for her.

If I can use a trap anyone can!

Brilliant update op, well done Smile

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 21/09/2019 13:47

Great update OP, well done for all your efforts. Let's hope NDN now look after the cat properly!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/09/2019 13:59

I hope the neighbour appreciates your efforts!

bodgeitandscarper · 13/10/2019 08:35

Only just seen the update, well done OP! The amount of time that they are stressed in a trap is miniscule compared to the stress of living off their wits in fear outside all the time, so it's well worth it (and it works!)

I'm so pleased for all concerned, well done for taking the trouble to help, many wouldn't!

stayathomegardener · 15/10/2019 13:52

Brilliant update.

Well done you.

thecatneuterer · 15/10/2019 16:32

Do you know how the cat and the neighbours are getting on now Dobby?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 15/10/2019 19:50

Oh yes I'd love to know how's she's getting on @DobbyTheHouseElk

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/10/2019 20:04

Sorry this dropped off my watching list for some reason. Thank you for @ mentioning me.

What happened next isn’t clear. I have heard from the rescue to say cat has escaped again and they wanted to know if I’d seen the cat. NDN hasn’t spoken to me since this development and I haven’t seen them at all. I have asked the rescue to sort the situation out. Our camera shows the cat out all night again, every half hour or more in the night we’ve got a photo. So I think she is living outside again.

It’s really sad and disappointing. It’s now awkward because NDN hasn’t said. So I don’t know really what to do. Last time I spoke to NDN the cat was hiding in the house and yet to come out. I’m not sure trapping would work again and then there is the issue of what happens next.

At the moment we are observing from a distance and asking the rescue to help NDN in some way to get the cat to settle or find a more compatible cat for them.

thecatneuterer · 15/10/2019 21:07

I had a horrible feeling that would happen. The cat can't go back to them again. They need a different cat (or not cat at all). Are you putting food out again?

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 15/10/2019 22:09

Oh my god. Some people shouldn't have animals Angry It's not difficult to keep the poor thing in for a few weeks while it settles.
Hopefully the rescue place will catch her before it gets too cold and put your NDNs on their black list forever

Mollpop · 15/10/2019 23:02

They shouldn't have a cat. The poor thing needs a proper home.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2019 09:16

Yes, we have been putting food out. The cat looked very very thin to start with, but now looks a bit better. We have multiple images per night so have a good idea of the cats size.

I wasn’t surprised when the rescue rang. But I am sad that NDN hasn’t told us, and are also keeping distance from us (incase we ask I presume)

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 16/10/2019 16:42

Can you have her!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2019 16:47

No. I’m not looking for another cat. I have a fairly nervous cat and I don’t want another nervous cat.

Also I don’t want to steal my NDN cat, it wouldn’t be right.

Either the rescue help the NDN settle the cat, or they rehome it. IMO.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 16/10/2019 19:59

Oh well at least you're feeding her again now Dobby, well done.

Do you think the fact she was very thin means she probably escaped just after you caught her last time? In which case your NDNs need a bloody good slap Angry

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2019 20:11

It was a week later I think.

bodgeitandscarper · 31/10/2019 08:24

It sounds like they just want rid, or are too embarrassed to mention it to you.

Might it be worth approaching them and just saying you've noticed she's out again? You could suggest returning to the rescue or rehoming elsewhere and see what they say? It's so disappointng given all your hard work, poor cat will probably end up feral at this rate.

FWIW I have trapped some cats multiple times, so it's definitely doable. I hope things resolve soon for all concerned.

Aloe6 · 31/10/2019 13:31

Oh for goodness sake. How frustrating for you Dobby after all your hard work. I have to say if it was in my hands I’d get the cat trapped again and then passed on to a different rescue altogether. But appreciate it might not be that simple.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 02/11/2019 19:25

Any update @DobbyTheHouseElk?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/11/2019 20:10

Thanks again for alerting me to update, I don’t know why this thread dropped off the watched list.

@thecatneuterer @PickwickThePlockingDodo @bodgeitandscarper

I was contacted by the rescue place to trap the cat and return it to them. I refused because I didn’t feel comfortable doing it without letting NDN know. I don’t want to upset my NDN at all, I’m actually fond of them despite all this recent saga.

So I asked them to sort something out, I said they were welcome to trap on my land, but I wasn’t taking the cat to them.

So eventually they got NDN to agree to hand the cat over. The rescue then said they’d come and collect the cat as it was legally theirs, so I do wonder if they were asking me to do something semi illegal?

I trapped the poor thing really easily. Such a hungry kitty. I called the rescue and they came and collected immediately in the night. It was quite late and very dark when we did all this and I felt very sad.

Then I had to tell a very upset NDN in the morning that the cat had gone. I know we did the right thing for the cat, but I was really sad. The silly thing made such eyes at me in the trap, trying to rub up against me and purr and bat eyelids.

I am going to call the rescue and ask how the cat is. But haven’t had time so far.

Well done again for helping. Let's hope she finds a more suitable home.
