Our young lad is in hospital-hand hold needed

Came home from being out all day to a very poorly kitty. He was a bit sleepy before we went out today but I thought he was just tired. Got home to a few piles of vomit and a very lethargic cat. Took him to our vet (last appointment of the day) and poor lad is in a lot of pain. He sent us to the 24 hour hospital and he's been admitted for further investigations.
Vet not sure exactly what it may be. Pancreatitis was mentioned-went through that with our old girl. Anyway I have to wait for vet to call me.

Bless you OP. It's the worst feeling, they can't tell you what hurts or what they need.

Have you got decent insurance? (And a bottle of wine?)

Thank you all. He's only two so I don't think he should be so ill; he was fine last night zoomies and his usual cheekiness.
Have Petplan insurance luckily. I've had a small glass of chilled red wine; DD unpacked a few bits of shopping whilst I called the vets and wine ended up in the fridge. I now have some slightly warmer red.

Still no idea what's going on. The vet never called me despite saying she would once she'd done the bloods. I called this morning and the receptionist got a nurse update to say no change, he's stable, hasn't eaten but has peed.
Am not overly impressed with them right now-they have one vet and one nurse on overnight and provide 24 hour care to various practises in their group in London. Is this standard???
Our vets were sold to this chain earlier in the year so the 24 care transferred to their hospitals rather than another smaller group of vets 24 hour hospital.

Well hopefully its good signs that he's no worse and has had a wee.

But poor form that you've only had that update after chasing as they see the worry owners go through at times like this. When the dust settles -and your boy is home and well again- maybe time to look at what other vets are in your area and what their emergency cover is. Part of us sticking with our vet is them providing their own cover locally as centralising does seem to becoming a thing, especially where chains are involved.

I transferred Snorg to a vet hospital that had their own 24 hour cover. I still have her registered for emergency care, despite the emergency vet being only half a mile away from home. The logistics of her being in the bigger vet were difficult. I'd have to visit before 7.30 am and after 7.30pm and the PDSA who baby sat during the day weren't great at communication.

Is it Medivet? I’ve had no trouble with them. I hope you get some better news today, I was thinking of you yesterday when I did a long walk from Hampstead to Archway and went past the rescue. Good luck x

Thank you. Nice day for a walk yesterday.
It is Medivet. We were given the choice of the two hospitals and went for the one I knew exactly where it was.
Sadly most of our nearest vets are now owned by them!!
We used to have the best ever vet until she left and the other was great too. The newer vets there are nice enough but think the practise has lost something along with 5 minute shorter consultation times.
I was thinking of switching to this smaller chain who run the 24 hour emergency service our vets used to use but would need to investigate their overnight cover more.

That was the other one offered but it involved the north circular and I knew exactly where the other one is.

They told us the day vet does a round at 12-2 so am hoping we hear from them. DP works a 10/15 min walk away so may send him along if necessary.

One of the vets from our practise called me and updated me. Pancreatitis test showed negative but they aren't ruling it out as it isn't the most sophisticated.
He has low potassium (likely due to vomiting) and high white blood cells (so likely infection). X rays showed nothing
We had 3 options-went for 2nd so he is being transferred to the other hospital where he will have a proper ultrasound by a certificated vet. I wish we had taken him to that hospital yesterday!
Apparently the fluids have helped him but he still has temperature and sore abdomen.
We're missing him at home today.

Sending a paw hold from me and ivy cat. We've just been through similar a few weeks ago, she is almost 2 and ended up in the hospital for 12 days for kidney damage caused by poisoning.

I know exactly how you feel with the waiting for phone calls and updates. It's such a worrying time.

I remember your thread. Hope Ivy is ok now.
Apologies for incessant updating but it's helping me!
Spoke to our vet and he has free fluid on the abdomen, inflamed pancreas and a couple of inflamed lymph nodes. He is now on IV antibiotics, increased fluids and stronger pain relief. They are going to monitor him and reassess in the morning with possibility of CT scan or opening him up as they haven't ruled out a foreign body as not everything will show up.
Just want him home showing off (what was) his floofy tummy

He is a very handsome cat! Paws crossed he will be home and back to his floofy self shortly. It sounds like you acted quickly getting him to the vets so hopefully they have caught whatever it is early.

Do keep updating! I really found it helped too.

She's doing a lot better thanks, she looks to have gained some weight and she has a check up and blood test tomorrow to make sure the kidney levels are staying low!

Thank you. DD and I had a lovely day out yesterday but wish we'd been at home so I would have got him to our vets quicker. I also would have taken him to the hospital he is now at. Hindsight is wonderful.
Am pleased Ivy is doing well. They are such a worry.
