Adopting a retired Bengal stud??

LittleGinBigGin · 09/08/2019 17:04

So tomorrow I’m off to see a retired Bengal stud who’s looking for his forever home?

I’m already in love with him, what questions do I need to ask??

Any help would be much appreciated I’ve always had cats from tiny kitten ages!

Many thanks

To add- in my experience bengals tend to come up for rehoming about 3-7 years old as this is when territory becomes a big issue

In TC's case, this manifested in him desiring the title deeds to his neighbour's house...

LittleGinBigGin · 13/08/2019 14:29

Well I’ve been to see him everyday since Sunday.

Home check will be done tomorrow.

I’ve left him with my old jumper and pillowcases.

I suspect my amazon prime and credit card will get a battering if the home visit goes ok Grin

We have 4 bengals and I adore all but 1 of them!
We have 3 boys and a girl. 2 of the boys spray and it drives me insane but the younger one just follows our old boy around spraying where he has so I hope when biggest one goes the other will stop.
Biggest one is a thug. Hates me. Hates the kids. LOVES my husband.

My Dad took on 2 bengals. One wont go near people the other is very affectionate. I honestly believe it all comes down to the individual cat.

We have a catio for ours, in our old home they went out without issues, in our new home a few too many people had chickens and our biggest boy would 'play' with them.

If you love him, go for it - they are fantastic fun

I’d love to have an update after you’ve rehomed him OP. I think you’re very brave. I was a cat breeder for many years and wouldn’t have considered an ex stud as a housecat as the spraying doesn’t automatically stop after neutering, unfortunately,
Your boy sounds lovely so good luck

NotMaryWhitehouse · 14/08/2019 14:37

@LittleGinBigGin yay!! Look forward to seeing pics!

Sooverthemill · 14/08/2019 14:45

Ooh. Very interested in this thread. He sounds lovely! Can I hijack? We have a kitten who we were told had a BSH x Bengal mum and nobody knew who the dad was. She is the most affectionate kitten we've ever had and looks sort of Bengal without the dots. She has BSH eyes I think . She talks ( well actually she quacks). She has strong opinions. She is 18 weeks old now and has made huge friends with one of our cats ( age 4) but our oldest cat ( age 5) ignores her. She was simply a random kitten that was available when we wanted a cat after our beloved old girl died. Will she get aggressive? I hadn't heard that before

LittleGinBigGin · 14/08/2019 17:00

Home visit was fine.

He will be dropped off on Friday.

This is either going to be really great or really bad Grin

Hope it all goes well OP. But if it doesn't you can't say you haven't been warned Grin.

Well he’s here.

Currently exploring his confined space aka the en-suite.

So far so good.

Going to leave him in peace and pop back later I don’t want to stress him out too much.

How adorable!

I don't think he's stressed. I think he wants out. :)

LittleGinBigGin · 16/08/2019 12:51

I think he does too Grin but going to go off and have lunch then come back up.

Enjoy your peace while it lasts :)

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2019 12:54

Can he open doors?.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/08/2019 12:55

^ There speaks an experienced Bengal slave.

LittleGinBigGin · 16/08/2019 12:56

Fluffycloudland77

I’m not sure. He’d have to open 3 to get into the main hallway and I’m sure I will hear him before he does.

Can he open doors?

Mine find howling relentlessly at a volume loud enough to wake the next street means someone will open the door for them. Why do it yourself? If it’s 3 am the response is usually quicker, if less friendly. After the human has learned that ignoring it is pointless, as the can keep it up for hours, if not days...

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/08/2019 14:11

If I’m upstairs ours twangs the handle of the locked lounge door to indicate he needs attention.

LittleGinBigGin · 16/08/2019 14:18

Safely where I left him in the en-suite.

He’s very timid so slowly slowly.

Will leave the door open and let him explore the bedroom.

Ah - but where had he been when you were out to lunch?
He definitely looks like a Schrodinger's cat to me.

Sooverthemill · 16/08/2019 15:21

So sweet

mistermagpie · 16/08/2019 15:41

He's gorgeous!! People are weird about bengals, 'thug', 'aggressive' etc... I've had bengals for over a decade (two males and a female, only one male and female left now) and none of them have ever been the least bit aggressive. The male I had who has now sadly died was a fucking genius though, he broke four of those automatic feeder things, could open doors, play fetch and follow commands. They can teach themselves anything they want so watch out!

My other male is a big softy and the most friendly cat in the world but my female (who is that exact colouring of your guy and an ex breeding queen) is my soul mate, she is a very special girl.

In my experience the worst thing about male bengals is the noise, my two have both been incredible talkers and visitors would often mistake them for a baby crying....

If you have issues with spraying I have lots of tips, my male started doing it when we got the female (he had been done years before but it made no difference) but we managed to stop that after a few weeks.

Bengals are brilliant pets, you'll love him!

mistermagpie · 16/08/2019 15:46

Thank you, I’m praying he doesn’t but if he does I shall ask.

He looks like he's gaining more confidence! My female hid behind the sofa for the first day and I was worried she was going to be timid but she's not at all, they just take time to explore.
