Cat followed us home but now wont leave

So what's the protocol for dealing with a cat that has decided our house now belongs to him? Keep trying to evict him but he gets back in, finds a cosy spot and curls up for a snooze.
Have tried to find his owners, by asking around neighbours and posting on local Facebook. I know I shouldn't feed and that someone is likely to be missing him terribly, but without being cruel, how do I get him to leave?

Lucky the wee cat found your house to be safe in

TheOnlyAletheia · 30/12/2018 13:38

That cat is not going anywhere!

MikeUniformMike · 30/12/2018 14:03

Congratulations! Looks like you have a cat.

SocksRock · 30/12/2018 14:56

I wish this would happen to me. We can't have a rescue as apparently our house isn't suitable being on a main road (I have tried) and I don't want to buy a kitten to encourage more breeders. So I need a lost one to find me. I have a wood burner and many comfy beds to offer

EachandEveryone · 30/12/2018 16:02

Christ i have loads if you want one!😁

WindyWednesday · 30/12/2018 16:27

Do you have a local fb page. Say you’ve found him. Our local fb page is full of missing csts

RubixCubix · 30/12/2018 16:27

We live on a busyish road too. That's where we first met this cat. DD gave him a quick fuss, then he followed us and went up NDN's path and behind their house. An hour or so later, I opened our back door and in he strolled......

I think he is a lost cat, he might have followed someone and strayed too far, he may have been left alone over Christmas and been hungry and/or lonely.
Agree check for a chip, then put posters up etc.
We once had a cat for a weekend who had followed her owner’s son when he was visiting a friend, it was too far for the cat to get home so she was calling miserably near our house, and we took her in until we could trace the owner.

abbsisspartacus · 30/12/2018 16:42

Are you near droitwich?

ArabellaUmbrella · 30/12/2018 17:44

An hour or so later, I opened our back door and in he strolled......

That's because he is now your catGrin

madcatladyforever · 30/12/2018 18:42

One of mine is missing, he was a new addition, he is microchipped and neutered but wherever he is holed up obviously nobody has checked his microchip so please do - someone could be really missing their cat.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/12/2018 20:09

Ops said she is getting him checked. I’m thinking lost or abandoned pet poor love.

Mia184 · 30/12/2018 20:56

This looks like my cat but she is with me. It sounds like he or she is lucky to have found you. Will you keep him/her in tonight.

RedHotel · 30/12/2018 21:01

We have lost two cats in our time. They both just didn’t come in for breakfast one day.

We searched high and low. Put posts on social media and posters in the area.

I hope to God if they are still alive and wander in a house, they will get looked after.

(Yes, they were both chipped)

Thanks OP for looking after your new pet 😊

RubixCubix · 31/12/2018 13:25

Just to update, our cat visitor spent a 3rd night with us last night, on DD's high sleeper bed. He then woke me at 6am to be let outside and disappeared out of sight. Hoped he might have had enough of us after a house full of over-friendly children yesterday, but no. Followed me back in from shopping at 11 and is currently playing catch the hairband with DC!

I've rung around all the local vets but none have details of any missing cats fitting his description. Can't get an appointment to check for a chip until new year though as currently only doing emergencies.

He seems so confident in effectively managing a household that I'm certain he must be somebody's pet, but at the same time it's nearly 4 days now and no evidence anyone is looking for him much either.

Maybe his owners are away for Christmas and he said found a better home in the mean time.

LanaorAna2 · 31/12/2018 15:23

He is a very beautiful, loving boy. And the new member of your family.

Irish3008 · 31/12/2018 15:26

Your pretend resistance is very funny OP. We know you love him already. 😍

LanaorAna2 · 31/12/2018 15:30

My cat Mr C was a rescue who had been abandoned. He is the sweetest person I know. The first night I got him we slept on the bed together, and he slid right into the domestic routine within a day.

Well, it was me doing the fitting in with his schedule of choice Grin but he'd been on the streets for years and took to the return of home life in the blink of an eye.

It appears you are The Chosen One.

Deathraystare · 01/01/2019 14:08

That's how we got our tabby (who is sadly no more). He had always popped in to eat our cat's food but when Bonfire Night came, he ran inside out under the sink cupboard and would not come out!

The two cats (yes he stayed!) were never bezzie mates but sometimes slept on the same bed! He had his funny moments though. We were burgled (they only took the DVD player!) but it must have upset him or perhaps he got in the way, because he was a bit skittish after that.

Sometimes when my brother and his friend came back late, they would dish up some lamb curry for him.

Dollymixture22 · 01/01/2019 23:12

He could have been a pet but have been abandoned. Some heartless people move house and just don’t take the cat.

If he is lost, then I am sure his owners would be pleased you are keeping him warm and fed.

TinselAndKnickers · 02/01/2019 23:56

Enjoy your new cat! I love threads like these.

How's your new car doing?

elephantoverthehill · 03/01/2019 00:07

How's your new car doing? It's fine thank you. It just needed a bit more tiger in its tank.
