Cat followed us home but now wont leave

So what's the protocol for dealing with a cat that has decided our house now belongs to him? Keep trying to evict him but he gets back in, finds a cosy spot and curls up for a snooze.
Have tried to find his owners, by asking around neighbours and posting on local Facebook. I know I shouldn't feed and that someone is likely to be missing him terribly, but without being cruel, how do I get him to leave?

Enjoy your new cat! I love threads like these.

I always have mixed feelings about threads like these. Part of me thinks how lovely, OP is lucky etc then another big part of me thinks very sad for the cat’s family who may be desperately missing him. Being as I have two cats, one is a wanderer and the other follows people (if we go out we have to check she is not following us, she has previously come on a two mile walk with us!!) I would hope someone would not be letting either of them in their house unless it was freezing outside. (Although I know someone else does feed wandering fat cat Confused)

Both of ours are microchipped but only one will wear a collar. One of ours was missing for several days later, silly as it sounds it didn’t occur to me to contact the vets but I did search via Facebook and find out who was feeding him.

Tricky I know but please do follow up on checking the microchip, someone may be really missing him.

Not a problem for responsible pet owners who chip their cats.

True, if and only if, each person that finds a cat takes it to the vet and gets it checked. I would think that is not as common as we would like.
Certainly the people who started feeding our cat didn’t check he had owners. (They still ignore the “Do not feed” collar Angry)

OP, have you managed to get an appointment to check for a microchip yet?

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 03/01/2019 16:24

Our local CP FB page has a photo up today of a fat healthy cat taken as it looks into someone's house. Its expression is very much 'let me in now' - the poster wanted someone to claim him. Could you do something like that? Someone must be missing him.

thecatneuterer · 03/01/2019 16:33

The cat still hasn't been checked for a chip. There really isn't any point in doing anything else to try to find owners until that has been ruled out.

Yesitwasmethistime · 03/01/2019 17:16

The cat still hasn't been checked for a chip.

Do you know that or are you assuming that based on the OP not updating? I must admit I am hoping my worry that the cat is not going to have its chip checked,as it seems to have settled in, is unfounded.

thecatneuterer · 03/01/2019 17:18

The OP said they couldn't get to the vets to scan the cat until early the new year. And due to the lack of update I'm just assuming ...

DarlingNikita · 03/01/2019 17:39

We've had over the years several visiting cats that stroll in, or stand outside demanding to be let in if the door is closed, and disport themselves about the house, on beds/sofas etc.

At least one of them I know for a fact had an owner. We never fed it but it was always sleek and healthy-looking. It just took a liking to our house for some cat reason.

RubixCubix · 03/01/2019 21:17

Sorry for not updating sooner stupid work taking up my MN time but cat has been reunited with his owner who contacted me via FB.

I said all along I didn't want to be a catnapper and that he clearly must have an owner somewhere. I just didn't have the heart to be cruel to a little lost animal and shut it outside in the cold when it desperately wanted to be in my house instead.

Glad there was a happy ending.

Mia184 · 03/01/2019 21:23

I’m glad for the owners but you might miss him? Are you thinking about getting a cat now that you had a feline visitor?

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/01/2019 21:50

Well that’s bittersweet isn’t it?. Do you miss him?.

RubixCubix · 03/01/2019 21:55

Dont miss him as such as I mainly didnt even notice he was in the house most of the time, as he would just sneak in to some comfy spot for a snooze! I would love to have cats of my own again one day; our big ginger old boy only passed away last summer. Unfortunately I'm not in a financial position to commit to a new pet right now, plus we may have to move house soon. DC are certainly enjoying telling everyone the story of The Christmas Cat (the nickname they gave him) who came to stay.

Well yeah obviously.

But every thread on here that mentions someone finding a cat advises to get the chip checked within the first couple of posts and... from the threads I recall... the OP does, but there’s no chip.

Wildcate · 03/01/2019 22:49

OP

Thank you for taking the cat in until you found its owner.

We’ve lost (chipped!) cats previously and just hope that if someone came across them, they’d be taken in and looked after.

moredoll · 03/01/2019 22:50

I'm glad you found his family for him OP. It was good you to take him in, and to have his microchip checked.

Yesitwasmethistime · 04/01/2019 01:03

Well done OP.

EachandEveryone · 07/01/2019 19:24

Where they close by?

Pannalash · 08/01/2019 00:54

Well done Op, is he a Burmese?

RubixCubix · 08/01/2019 20:13

I think he's a standard moggie but I'm not really sure what a Burmese looks like though.

Anyway I came back to this thread to say a couple days after his owner collected him, the cat came back! He tried to get in when we left in the morning and then again the next night he was sat outside my car down as I got home from work.

And then tonight I've just got home to find him curled up on my sofa asleep. I suspect he followed DC in earlier probably with encouragement, but they deny it

If it's got a v cut in its ear then he been done & it's a farmer cat. We had one 12 years ago or take it to the vets to find out if its has a chip.
