The litter tray

Name this cat please!

I've taken in a cat who has been living in a box on a doorstep for at least a few months. I wasn't too concerned when it was warmer but have been making enquiries since the cold weather and it has become clear that she has inadequate care and nowhere else to go.

Neighbours say she was left behind when previous owners moved, and she has definitely been spending all night every night outside in a plastic cat carrier with a coat partially over it. So, i snuck up and shut her in the box while she was asleep, and now she's in my kitchen!

Taking her to the vets next week for defleaing, deworming and general checkup, and of course if she turns out to have a microchip then things might go differently, but I'll probably keep her if she doesn't and I need a name ready in that case to register her at the vets.

She is (at least in comparison to my last cat) brick shithouse shaped, has been witnessed killing rats, and wants massive physical rofl cuddles and fuss every time she sees me. This is every hour now she's in my kitchen, she's not bored yet.

Am considering Katniss since my DSD is obsessed with The Hunger Games, all other suggestions much appreciated please!

Hardy. Tough fur. Ratter.

She sounds like a tough, no-nonsense cat.

Like a Coronation Street character.

Patricia. Ena. Hilda. Doris. Betty. Sharples.

Sorry.

It's a he.

Sir Mortimer Poosalot, Keeper of the Doorstep, Slayer of Rats, Divine Ruler of the Fourth Step From the Bottom.

It's perfect.

OK the vets say I have to wait 28 days for a reply to the email they sent to the previous owners.

Meanwhile I've wrapped two Xmas pressies and labelled them To Mortimer. Better buy for everyone else from him too, my previous cat used to get us all something.

28 days is a long time. If they do reply you should offer to keep him. They abandoned him for a reason - maybe relationship breakdown, maybe the new landlord doesn't allow pets, whatever. It's a mean thing to do, but presumably they were desperate.
Hope you and Mortimer have a happy Christmas and a cheering and successful New Year.

I will certainly keep him if I can. Thanks for all the lovely wishes people!

Everyone here now has a present from Mortimer, he has his own Xmas stocking, he comes when called (if he thinks I'm calling him for food), let's me rub his belly and sleeps under my bed. Snoring.

Happy Xmas everyone, fingers crossed for 14th January when I'll hopefully be able to adopt this gorgeous boy!

OK as it turns out I don't think he's actually properly litter trained. He went in the tray a few times, but he's been elsewhere so many times now that I no longer think it's just a few settling in accidents. He even did one of his massive poos right next to his food bowl yesterday morning.

I have a plan of action, let's hope we can crack it soon.

Tricky. If you can, shut him in one easily cleaned room with his tray, at least overnight. I’m sure you are keeping the tray scrupulously clean. Some cats like one tray for pee and one for poo. Is his tray somewhere private, and big enough.Multiple trays for a while might help, at one stage I think I had six when my elderly cat was being awkward about using the tray. You also need to clean the spots where he is pooing or peeing thoroughly so there is no residual smell for him. You can get a spray for this at a pet shop. It may be that he has always toiletted outside in the past and just doesn’t get it. You could try using soil instead of litter, that might be more familiar.

He is adorable though, very cuddly looking.

Aww. He's gorgeous. The Cat Daddy, Jackson Galaxy is great on litter tray issues.((You Tube & My Cat from Hell series). He might need a few trays til he gets settled (it's an anxiety, territory marking thing).

What a beauty! Glad she's adopted you.

I have got totally distracted from whatever it was I am supposed to be doing..in search of a name for your lovely girl.

Brigid, Bibiana, Isadora, Hilda, Josephine, Carissima, Talia, Carmel, Clothilde, Laura, Adelaide, Florentine, Delphine, Afra, Liberty (Libby, Abigail, Petronilla, Ursula, Theodora, Merryn, Serephina, Dulcie, Dymphna/Daphne or Ebba x These are all saints names (just because there are some great saints names, and angels names too) Maybe the ph/f names jump out as they sound fluffy.

I got woke up by our little b&w girl Ivy purring into my ear. A polite way of telling me it's time for breakfast.

He is mine! No response to the email the vets sent, so I can now officially own him myself.

The litter tray is not in the place I'd like it to be, but is being used 100% of the time so happy with that for now.

This afternoon I informed my 3 year old that Mortimer will be staying with us forever and ever, he was so happy Grin.
