I've taken in a cat who has been living in a box on a doorstep for at least a few months. I wasn't too concerned when it was warmer but have been making enquiries since the cold weather and it has become clear that she has inadequate care and nowhere else to go.

Neighbours say she was left behind when previous owners moved, and she has definitely been spending all night every night outside in a plastic cat carrier with a coat partially over it. So, i snuck up and shut her in the box while she was asleep, and now she's in my kitchen!

Taking her to the vets next week for defleaing, deworming and general checkup, and of course if she turns out to have a microchip then things might go differently, but I'll probably keep her if she doesn't and I need a name ready in that case to register her at the vets.

She is (at least in comparison to my last cat) brick shithouse shaped, has been witnessed killing rats, and wants massive physical rofl cuddles and fuss every time she sees me. This is every hour now she's in my kitchen, she's not bored yet.

Am considering Katniss since my DSD is obsessed with The Hunger Games, all other suggestions much appreciated please!

Has Katniss/Claude savaged the vet? Xmas Grin

Report
EatsFartsAndLeaves · 17/12/2018 19:58

Sorry, only just got back from the vet in time for dinner and putting child to bed.

He is a he.

He has a microchip.

The phone number on the chip is disconnected, so the vet has sent an email to the address on it. If no reply they will send a letter in the post, but I think we already know that the previous owners moved house.

He is deflead and dewormed, so can come and cuddle on the sofa this evening and help me wrap presents. He was impeccably behaved and not too freaked out by the vet visit.

Go with Katniss.

Not pregnant then. I suppose you just have to wait and see if the people on the chip respond to the email. How long does that take?

Happy ending pending Xmas Grin

No idea how long they might take, that's the trouble now. I could keep him right over Xmas and then get a call that they want him back.

He needs to settle though, so I'm going to let him into the rest of the house. In a few days I'll ring the vets again and ask how long they think we should give it before we change his microchip details to mine.

Getting attached though.

It would be very sweet to see this very affectionate cat greeting his beloved humans after a long separation.

So, is he Mortimer?

What was his name on the microchip?

It looks like he's chosen his human OP. You lucky woman

If he had previous nice humans they would have updated his chip details.
Congratulations on your newest family member op.

The vet can't yet give me details from the chip due to data protection, but after they've satisfied themselves that the previous owner can't be contacted, they can tell me the details of the cat. He was actually registered with the same surgery I took him to, so they'll have a bit of history on him too.

He was probably called Milo since that's what the people feeding him were calling him.

Weighs 5.65 kilos Bear

He likes the stairs, lies on one step in the middle waiting for me to come past and rub his head.

Stood up tall on his back legs to stare at the front window earlier, which has a view of street lights and cars in the rain much like the view from the doorstep he was living on. Seemed a bit scared, ran away.

Good luck with fostering him at the moment. Mort/Mortimer/Morty are great cat names for him.

I'd say he's landed in his four paws with you and knows it. Have a Happy Christmas with him.

Ah, so I was right, I thought he looked like a neutered lad from the rear! Just like MentounasCat! Mortimer would be a great name for him, hope you get to keep him.

Ah, so either way a happy ending? A lovely home with you or reunited with his original owners. Do update us though, OP

Waiting is already killing me, he's just such a nice guy. Seems to be up for belly rubs too, although I'm still a little wary of the enormous claws.

Aw, Claude is a great name for a boy cat.
But if he’s already called Milo, then that’s not too bad too. I hope you get to keep him

Mortimer is a great name. In 2010, one summer evening a blue grey Persian cross maine coon came into our house, looked around, and sat down in the lounge. He'd been sleeping rough for a couple of weeks and we'd been eating hi but didn't want to come on too pressured. After he looked round, we took him to the vets, but his previous owner (identified from the chip) was no longer contactable. We signed the cats protection papers and he moved in with us. One house move and one child later, he's still a big part of our family, although he's 14 now. Cats choose their people. Best of luck x

The Right Honourable Oliver Reginald Jones, Keeper of The Doorstep, (Reg or Oliver for short).

Sorry, all my animals have names like this. I think you will get to keep him. They didn't care enough to take him, and if they come back, fight for him.

He is beautiful.
