I've taken in a cat who has been living in a box on a doorstep for at least a few months. I wasn't too concerned when it was warmer but have been making enquiries since the cold weather and it has become clear that she has inadequate care and nowhere else to go.

Neighbours say she was left behind when previous owners moved, and she has definitely been spending all night every night outside in a plastic cat carrier with a coat partially over it. So, i snuck up and shut her in the box while she was asleep, and now she's in my kitchen!

Taking her to the vets next week for defleaing, deworming and general checkup, and of course if she turns out to have a microchip then things might go differently, but I'll probably keep her if she doesn't and I need a name ready in that case to register her at the vets.

She is (at least in comparison to my last cat) brick shithouse shaped, has been witnessed killing rats, and wants massive physical rofl cuddles and fuss every time she sees me. This is every hour now she's in my kitchen, she's not bored yet.

Am considering Katniss since my DSD is obsessed with The Hunger Games, all other suggestions much appreciated please!

Ethel for a cat is great, especially if it references your DM.

Jenny was my initial thought until I read your description, now she seems more like a Zena. She's lovely.

She's been in my kitchen less than 48 hours, and the headline weather forecast in my area is "Windy with freezing rain, snow and ice tonight".

I'd tried a few times before to catch her but she'd come running out for a cuddle too soon, I'm so glad I managed to get her before this really nasty weather. The stuff she was sleeping on inside the box was soaking wet Sad. My reasons for not getting another cat yet suddenly seemed pretty insubstantial.

Unlike the cat. Can't wait to find out how much she weighs, my last cat was 4.5 kilos I think this one may be double that.

Shock OK maybe not quite double, having just googled "9 kilo cat"!

This is where she lived for months - I'd stuck my son's old rainsuit in there for a bit of warmth.

Your new feline overlady is gorgeous. i have no suggestions for a name, just admiration for what you've done for her.

How many people have been feeding her if she's been there for a couple of months?! She's huge (and I say that as someone whose previous cat was over 7kg)

HardAsSnails · 15/12/2018 22:05

She looks lovely, how lucky she is. She is a lot like my now old boy and has same poise, he came to us from rescue at 8yo and had never lived indoors before, he too had the thickest densest coat I'd ever felt on a cat, and he's huge too. He's a joy.

I was going to suggest Bertha but after reading your suggestion for Ethel, i think that's perfect. Well done you for rescuing her!

She will already have a name - have you asked the neighbours if they know what it is?

If the neighbours don't know, then maybe just speak to her using a few different names that you like until you find one she responds to. That'll mean she's happy with the name change Smile

Eartha (Kitt, obviously Grin)

She's had a couple of people feeding her, a bit of extra weight will have helped with the cold a bit I expect. I'll ask about future feeding regime when I get her to the vet, she'll need much less sitting in a warm house all day.
