I’ve just got back from the emergency vet - my beautiful cat had to be put to sleep.

It’s three in the morning and I’m so sad.

He was absolutely fine and then at midnight started yowling in distress and couldn’t weight bear.

Apparently he’d had a thrombus, a clot. He was put to sleep at 0145 as there’s nothing they could do for him.

I’m so upset. I’ve still got his fur on my cardigan. I’m going to miss him so much.

So sorry for your loss. You’ve had a terrible shock.

Remember that you did the only thing you could for him and I’m sure he knew how much you loved him.

MotorcycleMayhem · 25/11/2018 10:51

Oh I'm so sorry, i can't imagine how you're feeling.

You've done the best thing you could possibly do for him, and he's pain free now. Huge warm unMumsnetty hugs for you. Flowers

gobbin · 25/11/2018 10:57

That happened to our boy. It’s awful as there’s nothing you can do to help them 😭. You were there at the end, that’s the best you can do. x

Gosh, what a shock. Bet he had a great life with you and you made sure he didn't suffer when he became ill. The best kind of cat slave. x

Sidge · 25/11/2018 13:22

Thank you all so much for your lovely words.

I’m sure sadly many of you know the pain and sadness of losing a furry family member.

He was so loved and will be so missed. 😿

I am so very sorry. I was a vet nurse for many years and so saw this condition multiple times. It was and still is my biggest fear for my own cats as there really is nothing you can do. In the rare cases treatment was attempted the cat was still put to sleep within days.

Janleverton · 25/11/2018 16:35

He was the spitting image of my gentleman cat who died 3 years ago. What a handsome cat! So sorry - it’s really horrible.

Yes grief for a pet is still grief, they are a member of the family and it hurts when they are no longer with us. So sorry you have lost your beautiful boy Flowers

Awww, so sorry, he was a beautiful boy. Know how heartbroken you must be xxx

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/11/2018 19:31

He was gorgeous Sidge, what a horrible shock.

Our 10 year-old boy was found under a bush bordering our wall in the neighbouring care home in June.

The vet thought it was probably a heart attack, I just kept thinking he'd been trying to get home and didn't make it. He's missed so much (he was the only cat I ever had that would sit on command).

We did have a cat-shaped hole in out lives though and these little buggers have been with us from a rescue since October.

They'll never replace Big Cat, but they are very much their own characters and have brought a huge amount of joy.

Sidge · 25/11/2018 19:39

They are just gorgeous Hairy. I imagine in time we’ll acquire another kitty. Losing our boy is going to leave such a gaping hole in our lives. He was so funny and so much a part of the family.

He was quite aloof and only climbed on us on his terms. He ran away from strangers and didn’t really like being picked up. However he adored DD3 age 12 and allowed her to do anything to him. He’d sit outside her bedroom door and shout to be let in!

He was a really fussy eater but adored tuna and always wanted to lick the tin if allowed. We didn’t want him to cut his tongue so we’d have less tuna in our sandwiches so we could put some in his bowl!

He was only 6 😕
