Fin you have a ginger cat, what’s his personality?

We lost our big ginger boy this week, he was super loving, very cuddly, purred like a pneumatic drill, dh is adamant that that’s fairly typical of male ginger cats, I think we just got lucky with him. So, if you have a ginger boy, what’s he like?

Beautiful, stupid, very chilled around people, likes to eat pigeons and sleep in DS2's bed Grin

TheLongRider · 25/10/2018 19:19

Yup, big, easy-going, people-loving cats.Biy gingers are fabulous. I still miss one of mine. I have a black and white fluffy boy with a similar personality.

FekkoThePenguin · 25/10/2018 19:20

Lazy, very lazy.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/10/2018 19:38

Sev is relaxed, lazy, cuddly and a bit dim and clumsy.
Oh, and he likes water - goes outside in the rain, sits in the shower tray, drinks a lot.

autumnboys · 25/10/2018 19:43

Lovely looking, lazy, anti social. Differs from other cats we’ve had in that he is not at all food motivated and seems to prefer sleeping on the floor.

QueenCuntyFlippers · 25/10/2018 19:45

Handsome, purry, chatty, cuddly (when he’s tired), independent outdoorsy type. I luffs him x

evilharpy · 25/10/2018 19:48

Big, chubby, incredibly purry, laid back, likes people, loves children, adores my 4yo and bangs on her bedroom door every morning to be let in, vets love him as he is so compliant and purrs through blood tests and takes pills very easily, pretty much a perfect cat. Not very bright. Does not like other cats apart from his sister. Gets a bit randy despite being neutered and tries to be inappropriate with his sister who is having none of his bullshit.

Fadingmemory · 25/10/2018 19:48

The old boy is gone but he was affectionate, a good hunter, unflappable even on 5th November and was always waiting for me inside the front door. He did sleep quite a lot too.

jaimebravo · 25/10/2018 19:50

In my experience yes he sounds like the big ginger tabby boy i had for years and he was the most placid cuddly cat, a total lap cat. My neighbours have one now who seems to have the same gentle nature.
Sorry about your cat

hugglesfor4 · 25/10/2018 19:50

Oh op - so sorry for your loss.

We lost our ginger tom last month and he's left a huge hole in our home. He used to announce his arrival in the house with the loudest meow possible, also purred like a pneumatic drill and was very loving too. He used to curl up with one of my dogs, pin his head and clean him. He was so gentle and left huge clumps of ginger fur behind after cleaning himself.

We've rescued another tom who is white - he's very loving and gentle but not as loud as my ginger boy. Maybe that'll come as he gets older.

StripySocksAndDocs · 25/10/2018 19:53

Very big and an odd mixture of loving and stand offish (he rarely looks for snuggles, but always responds when he’s petted). He secretly loves us (generally ignores us, but he’ll run over to anyone he’s not seen for a while.) I’d say he’s a pacifist too, as he’s just not aggressive at all.

SecretWitch · 25/10/2018 19:53

Sorry about the loss of your sweet boy 💐

The only ginger cats I have had have been female! Our current girl rules the roost. She is very bossy, very nosy and wants cuddles on her terms. She is also the best hunter in my little herd. Gifts from her include mice, snakes and any stuffed animal she finds hanging about.

I’m going to try to attach a picture of Miss Thing

Oh I didn’t read properly. I’m sorry you’ve lost your ginger boy.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2018 19:57

Cheddar says she's not ginger but 'Red.' She's incredibly affectionate, very cuddly and soppy. She's also extremely loud!

FekkoThePenguin · 25/10/2018 19:58

Actually put cat was orange with stripey socks. He was a huge green eyed lump who would just gaze at you as if he was expectunflg you to do something to amuse his furry majesty.

Polkadotdelight · 25/10/2018 19:58

So sorry you have lost your boy. My ginger boy was rehomed to me via cats protection league and has an 'ear tip' which suggests that at some point in his life he may have been feral. He was very very nervous to start with but now is a total lap cat, only my lap really though. He doesn't like to be picked up and spends loads of time outdoors. I can't call him fat and lazy but he certainly is very loving with me.

TheDuchessOfSex · 25/10/2018 20:05

Oh you must be missing him so much, I'm so sorry to hear that Flowers

I had a ginger boy long ago who only lived for about two years. He was a real character, loved to have 'conversations' with you chatting back and forth, so affectionate. He was a real pal to me.

I now have another one who's around three years old (having had several other cats of various colours in the meantime). We love him so much, he's another true character, super-affectionate and cuddly. When the doorbell rings he always comes running to see who it is (while my other poor cat goes to hide under the bed in terror!). If it's a package he follows me to watch me open it and jumps into the box the moment there's a space. He turns around and around like a dog before going to sleep... loves children and will just curl up and go to sleep on the rug while they play noisily around him... I could go on and on... Grin

JurassicGirl · 25/10/2018 20:08

Sorry for your loss OP :(

My ginger boy is very chatty, he sort of chirps mostly. He's slim but very heavy, loves sleeping on mine & DH's lap.

Funny, playful, never hunts but goes crazy over a lazer light toy!

Hates his back feet being touched!

Sleeps wherever he feels like it if no laps available & is all arms & legs Grin

unflappable even on 5th November

Oh yes, I have a film of mine watching the fireworks through the window with great interest Hmm. I've never seen anything like it!

BlingLoving · 25/10/2018 20:09

So sorry to hear. we lost our ginger boy last year and it was devastating. I think your DH is right - they're generally affectionate and placid and just so downright cuddly. When DS was tiny and I was sleep deprived, hormonal and, in retrospect, suffering from PND, I would cuddle him in the middle of the night and he would lie there and purr at me until I felt calm again. He also LOVED children and was always around them.

He was also territorial - hunted everything in sight and within weeks of moving in had established the ENTIRE neighbourhood as his territory. The poor neighbour's cats were definitely his followers rather than their own people!

We have another ginger boy now and he's less placid but otherwise very similar. Possibly will get even more chilled as he gets older. But he loves to jump on the bed and wake me up for cuddles with HUGE purrs at 6am.

shelikesemwithamoustache · 25/10/2018 20:10

We have a ginger boy and a ginger/tabby/black girl (brother and sister). Completely different personalities. Only two years old but he is like a dog. Follows you around, loves my 4 yr old and older children. Goes to the door if the door rings, wants to know what’s going on and is always under your feet or in the middle of proceedings. Stupid and eats anything he can get his claws into. Loves pizza. Totally soppy, loves the vet. His sister is completely different, likes selective people, not children, will only eat cat food and hides if anyone comes round the house.

LadyGrey66 · 25/10/2018 20:11

So sorry for your loss OP, it’s devastating when you lose them. He sounds a lot like our ginger - big, chubby, cuddly, very handsome and loves to be around people. You can carry him around like a baby. He can also be a little dim, and stubborn as hell, but he’s such a sweet boy.

Madratlady · 25/10/2018 20:23

Thanks everyone (especially the photos, I love seeing other people’s cats). We’re devastated, he was only young and so wary of cars on the road but still got knocked down outside our house as he ran home for his usual day of sleep and cuddles.

So sorry to hear your sad news Op

I have two ginger boys and they are both big soppy fluff balls. One doesn't sit on your lap but will snuggle next to you. The other is constantly on your lap or chatting to you. Most ginger boys I have come across seem to have the same soppy temperaments.
