My beautiful Gruber died yesterday

We got a call from the vets to say he'd gone into arrest and they couldn't bring him back.
He'd gone in for an X ray as he wasn't using a leg. He also had high blood pressure and a heart murmur and kidney problems.

He was 9. I'd had him for 7 years.

He'd had a bad start in life. Abused by a child and he'd rolled in bleach. No fur on his legs. Scared of everything.

Within a month he knew I wasn't going to hurt him and so he ruled the roost. He would greet me at the door with a 'performance' (stretch forwards then backwards then flop onto the back for a belly rub)

He would tell me all about his day, direct me to his foodbowl and then shepherd me to bed.

He brought me various 'dead fings' as I clearly couldn't be left to provide for myself

He saw me through a marriage although wasn't keen on my choice. I should have listened to him

First night he met my DP he was straight on his lap, then delivered a massive dead rat straight to my DP's trainers and then pissed on him through the duvet whilst we were in bed 😂 That signed an unbreakable bond between the two of them.

Gruber was now His.
DP was Premier Slave with the preferred lap. He never brought any 'dead fings' home again.

Clearly finally I had chosen well and Gruber decided DP was capable of providing for me 😜😂 and that he (Gruber) could retire.

He had many twat moments such as sliding off the neighbours plastic conservatory roof in the wet and ending up in a bush! Falling off the fence and total inability to corner at speed on laminate.

We loved him. It's not 'home' without him.
We got to the vets within half an hour of his death and cuddled him and took a lock of his fur. We are getting a paw print done.

I'm posting this to tell my MN friends and people who understand how much a pet can be loved and how much of a hole they leave.

Well, this thread has had me in tears. Such a handsome chap and such a lovely testimony to a cat life well lived.

BrevilleTron · 22/08/2018 22:21

Sadly I'm in tears again as a manager at work has asked me to prove I was at the vets yesterday. The union official told him he should take my word on it but no he's demanded proof. I offered to show the messages on my phone with dates and times but that won't do.

My vets have kindly emailed me the breakdown which says 'died in theatre' on it.
I'm now at home in an empty house as DP is on opposite shift with tears rolling down my face. I miss my Gruber

Flowers I'm so sorry. How wonderful it must have been for Gruber to find you after his bad start in life.

BrevilleTron · 22/08/2018 22:30

Thank you. He was a daft soppy affectionate cat. I just feel so lonely without him. Today really hurt when I got asked for proof. Even the union Rep was a bit stunned.

Oh lovely Gruber, you picked your servants well, my friend. Glad you chose the DP carefully, so now you can trust he shall look after BrevilleTron. You shall be missed.

Run free, catch fings, be the prince you are Flowers

123drink · 22/08/2018 22:39

What a beautiful boy he is. Thanks. Sorry for your loss.
Losing a pet is so hard.

wildewillow · 22/08/2018 22:39

R.I.P Gruber! He sounded like a great lad!

Shocked at the insensitivity if your manager! Are they even allowed to ask things like that?

isadorable · 22/08/2018 22:40

I'm so sorry about Gruber. Sounds like he loved you very much and you him. What bastards to require proof! i remember the first time i had a cat PTS - the lovely Tilly - I was so upset I walked into a plate glass door in a shop on the way home. My nose swelled up. Work clearly thought i was insane and let me work from home for a while.

It takes ages to feel better but that's what the love of a good animal is all about. Precious. Take care and be kind to yourselves.

EnormousDormouse · 22/08/2018 22:40

Your manager is a massive bellend.

I’m so sorry for your loss. What a wonderful little Prince. I can relate to a lot of this, as my cat is the only thing I wanted to keep from my marriage. Sending you hugs.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 22/08/2018 22:45

RIP dear puss. What a lucky cat to have been so well loved by you and your DP. ThanksThanksThanks

MrHecklesOboe · 22/08/2018 22:46

So sorry for your loss and about your idiot manager. RIP Gruber: it was wonderful though sad to hear your story tonight.

MrsMozart · 22/08/2018 22:48

Rest in peace beautiful Gruber Flowers

BrevilleTron · 22/08/2018 23:09

Thanks all. I'm slowly pulling myself together again tonight as DP will ring me on his break and I don't want to sob down the phone as it'll upset him too.

I'm cheering myself up looking at old photos of where the cat has taken over the telly, used the laptop, worn my underwear, participated in Cat Buckaroo, stolen my dinner....

Oh @BrevilleTron I'm so very, very sorry for your loss. We lost our darling wee girl (exactly the same age as Gruber and also to heart problems) on Friday and I'm just starting to be able to get through an hour or two without tears so I can understand how you feel. I hope your trip down memory lane with the photos is helping you to remember Gruber at his best. RIP Gruber and big unmumsnetty hugs to you and your DH. Thanks

BrevilleTron · 22/08/2018 23:33

Thanks @Balloondog it's hard isn't it. I think we will rescue some cats very soon as we have a lot of love to give. We were Gruber-approved Slaves so that has to count in our favour Grin

He knew how to punish me too.

I lived in a ground floor flat which backed onto a big lawn so my kitchen window was perfect for cat entry.
My friend and I found a tiny starving kitten shivering under an inner stairwell so brought it inside the flat and shut the window as Gruber was out Grubering.

We fed and warmed her but made the fatal mistake of NOT SHUTTING THE BLIND.

An enraged meow came from the other side of the window. "What is this TREACHERY Slave?? Who is eating MY food and in MY house? WHHAAAAAAAAAATTT!!!!"

We swiftly took kitten to vet and when we returned an hour later I sheepishly opened the window after removing the saucer and all evidence of THE USURPER

He stalked in tail swishing and hopped up onto one of the open back wooden chairs, aligned his bum and

Pissed up my oven.

I apologised and cleared it up.
That should have been a red flag. But I had WRONGED HIM and had been PUNISHED.

Didn't help that me and my friend had been discussing what he would potentially do when I returned. I phoned her and she applauded him down the phone while crying laughing.
He was on my lap within ten minutes 😂

And my friend adopted the kitten but the two never met again.
