I've been to a cat show and now I'm a bit depressed

These cats were perfectly groomed and fluffy and beautiful. And people took them from cages and lifted them, and examined them, and the cats just stood there calmly. Me and my dh exchanged glances; we'd heard about cats that behaved like that, but we thought it was just stories.

Then we went home to our own cat, and of course, to us, he is the best cat in the world. But only if he was a little less scruffy, not quite so bad tempered, and a little more compliant.

Those show cats aren't pets.

They're show.

Your cat is real. He's your pet.

I currently have a wheezing, scabby (long story), mass of messy grey fluff next to me. He's a state. But he's mine. My other cats are equally quirky. Wouldn't change them.

Yes, black cats are the best!

My catface baby would win though.

Tabby’s are the absolute best. Especially this semi feral chunk.

Your cat is adorable!

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2018 21:16

OMG I wish my would just stand there, instead of running marathons around my house, using everything as a scratching post, walking around on me in the night, digging in my hair, puking on the floor etc, etc.
But they are my gorgeous fuffingtons Grin

tabulahrasa · 21/04/2018 21:17

Lol, I assume it’s like dog shows though and you’ve not see the ones who turned up for the first time and went - hell no! And were never shown again.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 21/04/2018 21:18

I lifted up my miserable tabby and went in for a massive loud kiss yesterday and now in sporting perfect scratch whiskers on my face.

She's still avoiding my company

Want2beme · 21/04/2018 21:48

The poor old things. They'd love to live the lives of ours.

I went to a cat show once. There were lots of stunning cats to admire.

Except for one poor fella who'd been disqualified and put to the side of the room in his cage on his own in disgrace. His crime? According to a note on his cage he'd bitten a judge.

I don't think he enjoyed being showed at all.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/04/2018 22:16

For some reason I find it really funny that the cat bit the judge.Confused
I always find it odd on Crufts when the dogs are getting judged and the owners are still brushing them.
Yes, we can see your dog has a pouffy tail, stop now.

C0untDucku1a · 21/04/2018 22:24

Grin my two would not co-operate under those circumstances at all. In fact, one would very vocally tell you to go to hell, she hadnt been fed EVER, nobody ever stroked her constantly and the food is not good today despite being awesome and the same yesterday.

Namethecat · 21/04/2018 22:24

My puss cat wouldn't stoop as low as enter herself into a beauty show 😉

My baby is awesome, but he'll never behave. He's our fur baby, has a hilarious personality, and trashes the place.
I wouldn't change him. Smile

You have our cat! Is he there now? Only, it's raining here and he went out an hour ago to massacre mice....

caoraich · 21/04/2018 22:56

I'd like to enter ours. One would almost certainly bite a judge who was cheeky enough to feel her up without express invitation, and the other would chat loudly in her wheezy meow while distributing random clawings. It would give us a giggle and then we'd take them home and smoosh their faces and give them dreamies.

The poor show cats aren't pets. Your cat is of course the best cat in the world, because he is yours Grin

AnnaMagnani · 21/04/2018 23:03

None of my cats would tolerate being show cats.

The non-stop yelling in transit to the show, intense stress of being around other cats and people in a strange place, being stuck in a small box for hours and the horror of being washed.

I know some cats presumably like it. But mine like doing catty things like sitting in hedges and looking out of windows and chasing after flies in the garden and all the v important stuff a cat has to be getting on with in their day.

differenteverytime · 21/04/2018 23:04

Ours could never be a show cat because when we put her in the cat box and take her to the vet, they tell me they can hear her coming all the way across the car park.

Another owner of a beautiful black cat here! I can’t imagine for a minute that he would ever behave himself if he was entered into a show 😂

DixieFlatline · 21/04/2018 23:19

Plenty of show cats are beloved pets. But yes, the ones you see that are used to being held have stuck it out and kept being shown precisely because they got the hang of it early on. The ones that wriggle lots and hiss and swipe aren’t easy to judge properly and thereby don’t tend to score as well as they otherwise could.

NorbertTheDragon · 21/04/2018 23:19

Another black kitty here. He would definitely be a judge biter, he's not keen on human contact.

NorbertTheDragon · 21/04/2018 23:22

Whereas this one would walk himself to the show and demand that everyone made a fuss of him. He's a big show off!

caoraich · 21/04/2018 23:29

He is spectacular, Norbert!

When I do the voice of this one in my head it's always the dowager countess of Grantham.

In response to trying to get her to a cat show I imagine something like "You want me to do WHAT?! How vulgar."
