I've been to a cat show and now I'm a bit depressed

These cats were perfectly groomed and fluffy and beautiful. And people took them from cages and lifted them, and examined them, and the cats just stood there calmly. Me and my dh exchanged glances; we'd heard about cats that behaved like that, but we thought it was just stories.

Then we went home to our own cat, and of course, to us, he is the best cat in the world. But only if he was a little less scruffy, not quite so bad tempered, and a little more compliant.

Loving Zibbidoo’s cat’s expression Grin
My Matt is a larger version of Lemon’s tabby.

@juneybean, what is it with Persians sounding like a heard of elephants walking around the house. Glad it's not just my two!

juneybean · 23/04/2018 12:49

Haha @toddlerteaplease we honestly think someone else is in the house sometimes!

LemonRedwood · 23/04/2018 13:03

@Papergirl1968 He is, isn't he?!

A picture of things to come if mine keeps behaving like the Six Dinner Sid that he is!

I'm in a local cat-lovers group on Facebook and someone posted a picture of His Highness sprawled all over their bed asking if anyone knew who he belonged to as he kept coming into their house to eat and sleep Shock Blush

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 23/04/2018 13:05

Don't feel alone, it's the same at dog shows & chicken/bantem ones & probably every other animal imaginable show too Grin

Ski37 · 23/04/2018 19:45

I caught my cat with a similar expression on his face to Zibidoo he was only yawning, honestly, but it still makes me laugh.
Toddlerteaplease on more than one occasion I have been sat downstairs and heard an almighty thump from the room above when cat has decided to jump off the bed. The first time it happened I had to go and investigate as I couldn’t believe something supposedly so light on its feet could make such a noise. I was expecting to see a piece of furniture on its side but no, just the cat. I’ve no idea how he is such a good hunter as anything with ears should be able to hear him coming a mile off.

Need to get me a cat, i think.

TerfsUp · 23/04/2018 19:52

You all have lovely cats and, as Resident Mumsnet Cat Judge, I award you all red rosettes for first place.

Ski37 · 23/04/2018 20:24

TerfsUp My cat is very appreciative of your rosette and offers his apologies for the fact he has just torn it off and tried to eat it .... he said that although it looked very fetching against his shiny black fur it may draw attention to him when he is in ‘psycho killer’ hunting mode and therefore ruin his chances ( if his thunder feet don’t do that first)!

Mightybanhammer · 23/04/2018 21:27

I know what you mean. Went to a cat show years ago imagining I would love it. The reverse was true.

Cats are such splendid beautiful eccentric creatures and I love seeing pictures of them, pet or exotic pedigree. But that rarefied atmosphere, and all of course in cages... it didn't work for me and I left feeling sad.

I luffs all my furries.

tierraJ · 24/04/2018 10:55

My sisters cat is an exotic Persian with a Pedigree name but no good for cat shows as he hates being brushed & needs to be shaved in places!!

He loves to have his face washed every day though... he is a high maintenance cat bless him!

I still think my Ebony is beautiful for a rescue cat

Our Persian was shown from a few months old to 7 months old, when we got him. He even went to France for shows and did seem to win a lot of things - The breeder was going to breed from him, but decided against it and we only got him once he was neutered (which was perfect as we certainly didn't want him for any other reason than a pet!).

Last week he had to have his nostrils widened, which was pretty scary, however has literally been the best thing we've ever done as his quality of life seems to be so much better, even so soon after the operation.

Whilst technically he could be shown, he gets really stressed when going to the vets, so the thought of putting him through that for our own benefit and not his, is not something we'd ever do.

So nope, no showing here... just being obsessed with food and sleeping in his fruit bowl on the table Smile

Fluffy, he is a beautiful boy. So glad he has a lovely home with you Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 24/04/2018 16:11

Fluffy, your boy is stunning. Snorg had her nostrils done a couple of years ago. The vet was shocked by how tiny her nose is. She still has issues, but not as bad as before. And she immediately lost the sad look she used to have in her face. I've never seen in since.

Greenteandchives · 24/04/2018 16:16

I used to show my Abyssinians. They both got to Grand Premier, which is as good as it gets for neutered cats. Had a Best in Show once. We used to enjoy it but oh, the bitching! There were some truly awful people about in the cat world.

hellsbells99 · 24/04/2018 16:22

My cat possiblymight be pretty enough for a cat show but possibly a bit too wild to be locked in a cage all day!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/04/2018 16:35

Mine was another failure at being light on her feet. She didn’t really jump down from anything, just sort of put her legs over the edge and slid off with a thump!

My cat’s pretty enough for a cat show, but can’t be arsed: she’s too busy being worshiped.

My boy’s a stunner but he won’t be entering any shows. He’s too much of a homebody.
