Boy tabby and constipation. Any way to help until we see a vet tomorrow?

Just that really, noticed today he's not right and is now feeling very sorry for himself.
He's got plenty water Andover increased his wet food to get his water up. He's been sick so changing to little and often food.
Is there anything I can do in the meantime?
He is currently under the bed. Poor soul.

Sounds like he should have been by now. Maybe you should take the 'watched pot' approach.

He doesn't seem to mind going to the vet!

Hecksonaplane · 20/01/2018 16:07

Back to the vet this morning, had to leave him for an hour to be sedated and his bladder drained and flushed again!

They are hoping the mess have an effect and he starts to pee by himself. He’s quite happy otherwise.

No issues getting him to the vet apart from the mews in the carrier, I do tell him if you’d just pee we would’nt have to go through this rigmarole Grin he’s an attention seeker I think!

I don't know about cats but I do know that some humans have trouble getting back into the routine of weeing after they have been catheterised. Hopefully, he gets it soon. I'm amazed that he does not seem to mind the vets!

Rudgie47 · 21/01/2018 15:50

How is he today OP? has he been for a wee yet?

Hecksonaplane · 21/01/2018 18:53

Hi, thought we were going to end up back at the vets as he was in and out the tray but ... he had two teeny tiny pees (mini cheer!) so I called the vet to check and was told to closely monitor. No sooner had I hung up the phone he was back in his tray and had a bit bigger wee!!!
So, we’re on the right path finally 😀he appears quite happy and settled.
We have appt in the morning but think I’ll call and see if we need it beforehand.

Bet you never thought you could get so thrilled about cat pee. What these furry things do to us! Really glad he is on the mend.

Hecksonaplane · 21/01/2018 19:44

I know! He’s totally under my skin having never been a “cat”person I’m an absolute convert he’s fabulous and has me wrapped round his little paw!
Though he is totally bemused at the praise following a trip to the tray Grin

He’s back at the Vet, waiting on a ultrasound to get a better of what’s going on.
Poor soul won’t know if he’s coming or going Sad

Poor Heckscat. I hope he is ok.

Rudgie47 · 22/01/2018 18:06

I hope hes going to be o.k.

ozymandiusking · 22/01/2018 18:13

I put a teaspoon of olive oil on Ozycat's food and that helps things along.

Argh this site!!! I have typed a reply twice and it jumps to another page and loses my text so short version :
He has a tear in his urethra.
They have fitted a tube and catheter to allow it to heal by holding it open and keeping the urine off it.
Luckily my vet did it and it went well. No fluid in the abdomen and the tear was small as they had sought advice from a specialist unit.
Hopefully he will be home fit and well in a week when we can try his new food again!
Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Your poor boy! At least they got to the root of the problem and can fix it. Get well soon fella.

Wolfiefan · 22/01/2018 21:43

Oh poor baby. Hope he's home soon.

thecatneuterer · 23/01/2018 11:01

Poor boy but I'm glad he's getting the right treatment. I've never heard of that. Do they know what caused it?

Hecksonaplane · 23/01/2018 19:13

I asked if maybe he had the tear first and they said no it would have been from the straining and they think that was likely stress/spasms but we’ll never know as there has been no stones or crystals.
I did wonder as they have put the catheter in 3x if they may have nicked it but again we’ll never know.
Just need to hope now there are no complications.
At the visit today he was bright and settled and has eaten.

Oh poor boy! I'm sure he'll be feeling a bit better with the catheter in. Fingers crossed everything heals soon

Rudgie47 · 26/01/2018 19:08

How is he OP?

Hecksonaplane · 26/01/2018 19:47

He's much better thanks, he is still at the vets and had to have the catheter refitted yesterday as it became dislodged but he's bright and eating so here's hoping!

Get well soon Heckscat!

user1486241726 · 27/01/2018 20:28

Have only just seen your updates OP. So sorry to hear he’s having more issues, especially after things starting to look up. I can 100% relate to being ecstatic over cat wee, still now years on from my boy having any issues I frantically check the litter box every time I hear him leave it to make sure he managed to go!!

Between these flare ups is he ending courses of medication OP? I say this because we noticed my cat kept improving after having bladder drained and then becoming blocked again a few days later and having to be returned, sedated and have his bladder drained and flushed. We then made the connection - every time we went to the vets to have him drained, they were giving us 3/4 days worth of meds. The minute these ran out, he got blocked again and had to go back - repeat cycle. This is why in the end I just asked for him to be put on a repeat prescription of Cystophan.

Hecksonaplane · 28/01/2018 00:23

Hello, yes it looks like he is going to be in long term medication and prescribed food, although he is a very picky eater so not sure how well this will work!!
Also, do your cats drink much? The Vet rang this morning to say his temp is slightly raised and there is mucus in his urine but expected to be from the inflammation he is eating a little but not drinking. To be honest he’s not a big drinker anyway but not sure what is normal.
He’s such a miss!

Thought you would all like to know he is home! So far so good apart from the fact he stinks of pee from peeling in his carrier on the way to the vet a week ago!

Do you think I can bathe him in the sink or wait until tomorrow when he's been home a while? I brought him home this afternoon.

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/01/2018 11:32

Did you bathe him after all? I am so glad he is home and I hope that all is going well. As for the drinking - I've read that water mixed with tuna juice or a little water mixed with wet food helps.
